We have achieved the enantioselective synthesis of highly strained, substituted ,,,-tetraphenylenes (≤98% ee) via the cationic Rh(I)/()-H-BINAP complex-catalyzed chemo-, regio-, and enantioselective intermolecular cross-[2+2+2] cycloaddition of teraryl diynes with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate. X-ray crystallographic analyses demonstrate the highly bent structures of the -substituted benzene moieties, and density functional theory calculations reveal the large local strain of the paraphenylene unit. H nuclear magnetic resonance analyses and theoretical calculations elucidate the stereoisomerism, indicating that the nonrotatable -disubstituted biphenyl structure results in and isomers.

Diabetic gastropathy is suggested to be the result of not only an autonomic neuropathy but also to disorder of the spontaneous rhythmic motility of the gastric smooth muscle. Attempts were made to investigate the alteration of the effects of endothelin-1 (ET-1), which is known to enhance the spontaneous activity of gastrointestinal smooth muscle, on gastric activity in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. STZ-induced diabetic rats were prepared by the injection of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats with STZ (i.

Ascites caused by hypothyroidism is rare and the pathogenesis is unclear. Several reports have presented cases of progressive ascites with hypothyroidism and elevated tumor markers. We report a 31-year-old female case with massive ascites and elevated serum CA 125 concentrations.

Background: We recently showed that there were clear regional differences in the dynamics of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) within Japan, which has an ethnically homogenous population. We speculate on the reason for these regional differences by correlating the regional distributions in the incidence of ESRD due to each of the following individual causes of ESRD: chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN), diabetic nephropathy (DMN) and polycystic kidney disease (PKD).

Methods: The number of ESRD patients entering maintenance dialysis therapy due to individual causes of renal disease in each prefecture was reported annually for a 6-year period by the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy.

We report a case of solitary fibrous tumor of the uterus producing high-molecular-weight insulin-like growth factor II (big IGF-II). A 78-year-old woman presented with a massive uterine tumor and worsening hypoglycemia. Endocrine and metabolic investigations revealed that her serum contained big IGF-II.

Background: We reported that patients with sodium sensitive type of hypertension exhibited the lack of nocturnal fall in blood pressure with enhanced natriuresis during night. Sodium sensitivity is caused by diminished glomerular filtration capability and/or augmented tubular reabsorption of sodium, and seems tightly linked with glomerular capillary hypertension. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between glomerular filtration rate and circadian rhythms of these parameters in patients with glomerulopathy.

Article Synopsis
  • AST-120, an oral carbonaceous absorbent, is shown to slow the progression of chronic renal failure in rats, although the exact mechanisms are unclear.
  • In a study involving male Sprague-Dawley rats, those given AST-120 experienced significantly lower protein levels in urine and higher urea clearance over 22 weeks compared to control rats.
  • The study concludes that AST-120's protective effects may be linked to its ability to reduce dietary phosphate absorption, rather than impacting the renin-angiotensin system or protein intake.

Background: We recently found regional differences in the incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in Japan, which is generally ethnically homogeneous, suggesting that factors other than genetic may contribute to the difference. Here, we examined regional differences in the amounts of expenses spent on antihypertensives, especially angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, in our search for an explanation.

Methods: Annually, the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy reports the numbers of patients entering maintenance dialysis in each prefecture of Japan since 1982.
