Efforts to simplify standard polysomnography (PSG) in laboratories, especially for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and assess its agreement with portable electroencephalogram (EEG) devices are limited. We aimed to evaluate the agreement between a portable EEG device and type I PSG in patients with OSA and examine the EEG-based arousal index's ability to estimate apnea severity. We enrolled 77 Japanese patients with OSA who underwent simultaneous type I PSG and portable EEG monitoring.

Development of a risk prediction score and equation for chronic kidney disease: a retrospective cohort study.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a risk factor for end-stage renal disease and contributes to increased risk of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. We aimed to develop a risk prediction score and equation for future CKD using health checkup data. This study included 58,423 Japanese participants aged 30-69 years, who were randomly assigned to derivation and validation cohorts at a ratio of 2:1.

Quartz-crystal microbalance (QCM) is a technique that can measure nanogram-order masses. When a receptor is immobilized on the sensor surface of a QCM device, the device can detect chemical molecules captured by the mass change. Although QCM devices have been applied to biosensors that detect biomolecules without labels for biomolecular interaction analysis, most highly sensitive QCM devices are benchtop devices.

Multimodal Telemonitoring for Weight Reduction in Patients With Sleep Apnea: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

A case of latent heterozygous Fabry disease in a female living kidney donor candidate.

A 52-year-old woman had been found to have hematuria at her annual checkup 5 years in a row. She hoped to donate her kidney to her husband, so we performed a percutaneous kidney biopsy at our department. The objective of this study was to estimate influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) against medically attended, laboratory-confirmed influenza during the 2011-2012 season in Japan using a test-negative case-control study design. The effect of co-circulating non-influenza respiratory viruses (NIRVs) on VE estimates was also explored. Nasopharyngeal swab samples were collected from outpatients with influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) in a community hospital in Nagasaki, Japan.

Surface tension may have important role for maintaining upper airway patency in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. It has been demonstrated that elevated surface tension increases the pharyngeal pressures required to reopen the upper airway following collapse. The aim of the study was to evaluate the associations between the concentrations of endogenous surfactants in saliva with indices of upper airway patency in obstructive sleep apnoea.

Background: Influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) studies are usually conducted by specialized agencies and require time and resources. The objective of this study was to estimate the influenza VE against medically attended influenza using a test-negative case-control design with rapid influenza diagnostic tests (RIDT) in a clinical setting.

Methods: A prospective study was conducted at a community hospital in Nagasaki, western Japan during the 2010/11 influenza season.

Using a highly sensitive flow-type 27 MHz quartz crystal microbalance, we could detect a small mass change during stepwise and alternating one-sugar transfer of glucuronic acid (GlcA) and N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) to an acceptor, catalyzed by chondroitin polymerase from Escherichia coli strain K4 (K4CP), and analyze the elongation mechanism of K4CP. K4CP was found to bind strongly to a chondroitin acceptor (K(d)=0.97 μM).

A highly sensitive 27 MHz quartz crystal microbalance instrument with an automatic flow injection system was developed to obtain realistic minimal frequency noise (±0.05 Hz) and to obtain a stable signal baseline (±1 Hz/h) by controlling the temperature of each part in the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) system using three Peltier devices with a resolution of ±0.001 °C and by optimizing the flow system to prevent fluctuation of the internal pressure of the QCM.

Adult community-acquired pneumonia caused by macrolide resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

A 28-year-old woman with community-acquired pneumonia was treated with sulbactam/ampicillin and clarithromycin, but failed to show any improvement after 4 days. The antibiotic regimen was changed to pazufloxacin and rapid clinical improvement was seen. Mycoplasma pneumoniae was identified as the causative agent, and adenine (A) to guanine (G) mutation at position 2063 in domain V of the 23S rRNA was noted in the isolate.

Induction of opsonophagocytic killing activity with pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in human immunodeficiency virus-infected Ugandan adults.

The levels of IgG determined by ELISA may have limited relevance in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected adults because of non-functional antibodies. 58 HIV-1-infected and 29 HIV-uninfected Ugandan adults were immunized with conjugate vaccine (CV) followed by polysaccharide vaccine (PV) after a 2-month interval, and the opsonophagocytic killing (OPK) titers against serotype 4 or 14 pneumococcal strains as well as the levels of serotype-specific IgG in sera were determined. Significant increases were found in the OPK titers and IgG levels for both serotypes after CV vaccination irrespective of HIV status.

Feasibility trial of adjuvant chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin after surgical resection in Japanese patients with non-small cell lung cancer: report of the Lung Oncology Group in Kyushu (LOGIK) protocol 0501.

Objectives: The present study was designed to determine whether adjuvant chemotherapy with paclitaxel (TXL) and carboplatin (CBDCA) after surgical resection is feasible in Japanese patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a multiinstitutional trial.

Methods: From August 2005 to March 2006, 34 patients received the following regimen: TXL (175 mg/m2) and CBDCA (AUC = 5) on day 1, every 3 weeks. The primary endpoint of this trial was the completion rate of four cycles.

Simultaneous anomalous reflection and quartz-crystal microbalance measurements of protein bindings on a gold surface.

Protein bindings onto a gold surface were detected simultaneously by QCM (delta F(water)) and anomalous reflection (deltaR) of gold on the same surface in aqueous solutions; the obtained delta F(water)/deltaR values correlated with surface areas and viscosity of proteins.

Hydration and energy dissipation measurements of biomolecules on a piezoelectric quartz oscillator by admittance analyses.

By using a 27-MHz piezoelectric quartz oscillator connected with a vector network analyzer, we obtained resonance frequency decreases (-DeltaFwater) and energy dissipation increases (DeltaDwater) during binding of biotinylated bovine serum albumin, biotinylated ssDNA, biotinylated dsDNA, and biotinylated pullulan to a NeutrAvidin-immobilized 27-MHz quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) plate in aqueous solution, as well as in the wet air phase (98% humidity, -DeltaFwet and DeltaDwet) and in the dry air phase (-DeltaFair and DeltaDair). -DeltaFwater indicates the total mass of the molecule, bound water, and vibrated water in aqueous solutions. -DeltaFwet indicates the total mass of the molecule and bound water.
