Efforts to simplify standard polysomnography (PSG) in laboratories, especially for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and assess its agreement with portable electroencephalogram (EEG) devices are limited. We aimed to evaluate the agreement between a portable EEG device and type I PSG in patients with OSA and examine the EEG-based arousal index's ability to estimate apnea severity. We enrolled 77 Japanese patients with OSA who underwent simultaneous type I PSG and portable EEG monitoring.

Article Synopsis
  • A 54-year-old man was diagnosed with an esophageal duplication cyst after imaging revealed a large submucosal mass on the lower esophagus, which was asymptomatic but warranted surgical intervention due to potential future risks.
  • Various imaging techniques, including contrast-enhanced computed tomography, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), were used to confirm the diagnosis and assess the characteristics of the cyst.
  • Histological examination showed the cyst was lined with muscle layers and epithelium, and while EUS fine-needle aspiration can aid in diagnosing similar lesions, it carries a risk of complications; hence, contrast-enhanced harmonic EUS was effectively used for noninvasive

Quartz-crystal microbalance (QCM) is a technique that can measure nanogram-order masses. When a receptor is immobilized on the sensor surface of a QCM device, the device can detect chemical molecules captured by the mass change. Although QCM devices have been applied to biosensors that detect biomolecules without labels for biomolecular interaction analysis, most highly sensitive QCM devices are benchtop devices.

A 52-year-old woman had been found to have hematuria at her annual checkup 5 years in a row. She hoped to donate her kidney to her husband, so we performed a percutaneous kidney biopsy at our department. It was difficult for us to detect apparent abnormalities under a light microscopic examination, and she was determined to meet the eligibility criteria for living kidney transplantation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the relationship between height and dyslipidemia in middle-aged Japanese men, focusing on those with a low body mass index (BMI).
  • Previous research indicated an inverse link between height and stroke risk among men with lower BMI, prompting a closer examination of childhood conditions and their impacts.
  • Results showed that taller men with a BMI under 25 kg/m had a lower risk of dyslipidemia, while height did not significantly affect those with a BMI of 25 kg/m or higher.

Objectives: A positive association between white blood cell count and carotid atherosclerosis has been reported. Our previous study also found an inverse association between height and carotid atherosclerosis in overweight but not non-overweight men. However, no studies have reported on the association between high white blood cell (WBC) count and height accounting for body mass index (BMI) status.

Obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnea (OSAH) is a common disorder characterised by repetitive complete or partial closure of the upper airway during sleep, which results in sleep fragmentation and oxygen desaturation. There is growing interest in the use of oral appliances (OAs) to treat OSAH. The purpose of this study was to clarify the cephalometric factors that are associated with OSAH severity and that predict the outcome of OA therapy.

Objectives: Several studies have reported the association between sleep apnea syndrome and insulin resistance. Being overweight is known risk factor both for sleep apnea syndrome and insulin resistance. However, no studies have reported on the association between serum triglyceride levels in relation to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG-HDL) ratios (a marker of insulin resistance) and sleep apnea syndrome accounting for body mass index (BMI) status.

Surface tension may have important role for maintaining upper airway patency in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. It has been demonstrated that elevated surface tension increases the pharyngeal pressures required to reopen the upper airway following collapse. The aim of the study was to evaluate the associations between the concentrations of endogenous surfactants in saliva with indices of upper airway patency in obstructive sleep apnoea.
