Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to understand how age affects the mutagenic potential of benzo[a]pyrene in the lungs of transgenic mice, focusing on mutation frequency and type.
  • Results showed that older mice (24 months) had higher spontaneous mutation frequencies compared to younger ones (3 months), indicating that lung mutations increase with age.
  • The mutation types also varied with age, as young mice primarily had G:C to T:A transversions, while older mice showed an increased prevalence of G:C to A:T transitions after exposure to benzo[a]pyrene, suggesting complex age-dependent mutagenesis.

Diesel exhaust (DE) is a major airborne pollutant of urban areas. It contains various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and nitrated PAHs. In this study, gpt delta mice were treated with inhalation of 1 or 3 mg m(-3) DE, or a single intratracheal instillation of diesel exhaust particles (DEP) or DEP extract.

The proton transfer to solvent in the excited state of protonated diaminonaphthalenes, 1,5-diaminonaphthalene (1,5-DAN) and 1,8-diaminonaphthalene (1,8-DAN), in aqueous solution, has been investigated by picosecond time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The deprotonation rate constants of the dications of 1,8-DAN and 1,5-DAN in the excited state to produce the corresponding monocations are determined to be 1.3 x 10(10) and 5.
