Acidic nuclear phosphoprotein 32 family member A (ANP32A) is an important host factor that supports the efficient replication of avian influenza viruses (AIVs). To develop an antiviral strategy against Gs/Gd-lineage H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses in chickens, we established chicken ANP32-knockout (chANP32A-KO) DF-1 cells and evaluated their antiviral efficacy through validation. The replication of all HPAI viruses tested in chANP32A-KO cells was significantly lower compared to that of wild-type DF-1 cells.

Purpose: Coccidiosis caused by eimerian parasites results in lethal watery or bloody diarrhea in hosts, and markedly impairs the growth of and feed utilization by host animals. We previously investigated detailed the life cycle of Eimeria krijgsmanni as a mouse eimerian parasite. Only second-generation meronts, as an asexual stage, were morphologically detected in the epithelium of the host cecum for at least 8 weeks after infection, even though oocyst shedding finished approximately 3 weeks after infection.

Introduction: Potential biomarkers for chronic seasonal heat stress in Kagoshima Berkshire pigs reared in the subtropical region were investigated by comparing the biomarker changes in the summer (a period of chronic heat stress) and winter (a thermoneutral period) seasons.

Environmental water-targeted surveillance of migratory aquatic birds at overwintering sites is potentially one of the most effective approaches for understanding the ecology of avian influenza viruses (AIVs). In this study, we improved the method for AIV isolation from environmental water samples by making a minor modification to our previously reported process. Since it is known that substance P is involved in the response to peripheral noxious stimuli in the spinal cord, we investigated the effects of intrathecally administered substance P at L6-S1 levels on colorectal motility in rats that were anesthetized with α-chloralose and ketamine. We previously reported that the avirulent fixed rabies virus strain Ni-CE induces a clear cytopathic effect in mouse neuroblastoma cells, whereas its virulent progenitor, the Nishigahara strain, does not. Infection with Nishigahara and Ni-CE mutants containing a single amino acid substitution in the matrix protein (M) demonstrated that the amino acid at position 95 of M (M95) is a cytopathic determinant. The characteristics of cell death induced by Ni-CE infection resemble those of apoptosis (rounded and shrunken cells, DNA fragmentation), but the intracellular signalling pathway for this process has not been fully investigated.

Recently, hepe-astrovirus-like RNA viruses named bastroviruses (BastVs), have been found in human, pig, bat, and rat fecal samples. In this study, we determined nearly complete genome sequences of four BastVs in the feces of healthy pigs. Genetic characterization revealed that these porcine BastVs (PBastVs) and BastVs from other animals including humans, had the same genome organization, that is, they contained three predicted conserved domains of viral methyltransferase, RNA helicase, and RdRp in the nonstructural ORF1 and the astrovirus capsid domain in the structural ORF2.
