Transport of dicarboxylates across the chloroplast envelope plays an important role in transferring carbon skeletons to the nitrogen assimilation pathway and exporting reducing equivalent to the cytosol to prevent photo-inhibition (the malate valve). It was previously shown that the Arabidopsis plastidic 2-oxoglutarate/malate transporter (AtpOMT1) and the general dicarboxylate transporter (AtpDCT1) play crucial roles at the interface between carbon and nitrogen metabolism. However, based on the in vitro transport properties of the recombinant transporters, it was hypothesized that AtpOMT1 might play a dual role, also functioning as an oxaloacetate/malate transporter, which is a crucial but currently unidentified component of the chloroplast malate valve.

The flowering integrator gene FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) in Arabidopsis thaliana is conserved between diverse plant species and is thought to be the flowering signal ''florigen'', a universal long-distance mobile signal. In soybean, two FT homologs having a function to induce flowering in Arabidopsis have been identified. In this study, we showed that the expression of FT from Arabidopsis by the Apple latent spherical virus (ALSV) vector promoted precocious flowering and terminated vegetative growth in a wide range of genotypes of soybean, without using a short-day treatment.

Post-operative hyponatremia is a common complication in children which results from hypotonic fluid administration in the presence of arginine vasopressin (AVP) excess. We evaluated the relationship between the change in serum sodium and AVP levels following percutaneous renal biopsy in children receiving either hypotonic or isotonic fluids. We investigated the anti-metastatic activity of a water extract of Cordyceps sinensis (WECS) using a model of mice injected with B16-F0 mouse melanoma cells into the spleen. WECS administered intraperitoneally reduced the number of metastatic surface nodules of B16-F0 cells in the liver of C57BL/6Cr mice in a dose-dependent manner, and significantly prolonged their survival. To identify the mechanism of the anti-metastatic effect of WECS, we examined its effects on hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)-accelerated invasion of B16-F0 cells using a chemo-invasion assay in vitro.

Background: Coronary sequelae that persist after Kawasaki disease (KD) have been associated with coronary vascular events in adolescents and young adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between coronary sequelae late after KD and circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), as a marker of vascular repair, or monocyte subsets as a marker of inflammation.

Geranylgeranylacetone (GGA), an isoprenoid compound, is a widely used antiulcer drug developed in Japan. GGA is structurally similar to plaunotol and geranylgeraniol, another isoprenoid reported to exert strong anticancer effects. Background: The prognosis of children with severe IgA nephropathy showing diffuse mesangial proliferation is poor. However, the prognosis can be improved by combination therapy (prednisolone + azathioprine or mizoribine + warfarin + dipyridamole) or prednisolone alone over a 2-year period, and disappearance of glomerular IgA deposits is often observed. Details of the incidence and clinicopathological significance of glomerular IgA disappearance remain unclear.

Background: We previously established a treatment protocol for conventional cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Novartis, Basel, Switzerland) in children with frequently relapsing nephrotic syndrome; ∼50% of patients remained relapse free for 2 years, without serious adverse events. Recently, microemulsified cyclosporine (Neoral, Novartis), which has a more stable absorption profile than conventional cyclosporine, has been developed. Background: The aim of this study was to investigate whether T-cell activation is involved in the pathogenesis of Kawasaki disease (KD) resistant to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment.

The present study reports on a case of extra-nodal natural killer/T cell lymphoma, nasal-type (ENKL), stage IIEA, in a 50-year-old woman who presented with a white tumor on a refractory ulcer on the gum. Concurrent chemoradiotherapy was administered, and effected a partial response. However, tumor recurrence was observed 5 months after the final diagnosis, and the patient succumbed 1 month after recurrence.

On the basis of allozyme and mtDNA sequence variation, we elucidated genetic relationships between two sympatric genetic types of Onychodactylus japonicus in Kinki and adjacent districts, and investigated their phylogeography. Allozymic analysis revealed the presence of two distinct genetic types (the SW-Honshu and Kinki groups) in this area, and their sympatric occurrence in three of 10 sampling sites. Fixed or nearly fixed allele differences in several loci strongly suggested reproductive isolation between the two types, although one hybrid specimen was found in a locality.
