Neutron imaging is a nondestructive and noninvasive inspection technique with a wide range of potential applications. However, the fundamentals of this technique still need to be improved, one of which involves achieving micrometer scale or even better resolution, which is a challenging task. Recently, a high-resolution neutron imaging device based on fine-grained nuclear emulsions was developed.

Blepharoptosis Associated With the Wearing of Hard Contact Lenses in Keratoconic Eyes.

Keratoconus is a condition that causes progressive thinning and anterior protrusion of the cornea. Because of its irregular astigmatism, mild to moderate keratoconus is corrected with hard contact lenses (HCLs), but blepharoptosis due to the long-term wearing of HCLs is often a problem. In this study, we investigated blepharoptosis in HCL wearers with keratoconus.

Adipsin-dependent adipocyte maturation induces cancer cell invasion in breast cancer.

Adipocyte-cancer cell interactions promote tumor development and progression. Previously, we identified adipsin (CFD) and its downstream effector, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), as adipokines that enhance adipocyte-breast cancer stem cell interactions. Here, we show that adipsin-dependent adipocyte maturation and the subsequent upregulation of HGF promote tumor invasion in breast cancers.

Gait rhythm analysis as a new continuous scale for cerebellar ataxia: Power law and lognormal components represent the ataxic gait quantity.

We estimated the severity of cerebellar ataxia by analyzing gait rhythm. We measured the step times in patients with pure cerebellar ataxia and healthy controls and then analyzed the distribution of the ratios of adjacent times. Gait rhythm displayed the best adaptation when expressed as the sum of the power law and lognormal distributions in both groups, and the groups could be distinguished by the exponent of the power law distribution, reflecting the fractal property of gait rhythm.

The present report describes a novel F5 mutation in a FV-deficient patient (FV activity, 6 IU/dL; FV antigen, 32 IU/dL) complicated by recurrent deep vein thrombosis. The patient demonstrated activated protein C resistance (APCR) with compound heterozygous mutations consisting of FV-Y1961C (FV) and FV-1982_1983del.

Microscopic vibrational circular dichroism on the forewings of a European hornet: heterogenous sequences of protein domains with different secondary structures.

We developed a microscopic scanning for vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy in which a quantum cascade laser is equipped with a highly focused infrared light source to attain a spatial resolution of 100 μm. This system was applied to the forewing of a European hornet to reveal how the protein domains are organised. Two-dimensional patterns were obtained from the VCD signals with steps of 100 μm.

In semiconductor manufacturing, the sublimation drying process is crucial but poorly understood-particularly regarding the solidification of agents such as cyclohexanol on Si substrates. This knowledge gap results in inconsistent film properties and risks such as structural collapse. To address this critical gap in knowledge, the present study focused on an in-depth examination of the nucleation behavior exhibited by cyclohexanol during its cooling and solidification on Si substrates.

Verification of the utility of the gonadotropin starting dose calculator in progestin-primed ovarian stimulation: A comparison of empirical and calculated controlled ovarian stimulation.

Purpose: To validate the effectiveness of a gonadotropin starting dose calculator for progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS), we conducted a study comparing the outcomes of oocyte retrieval between a group assigned gonadotropin doses via the calculator and a control group, where doses were determined by the clinician's empirical judgment.

Methods: Patients underwent controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) using the PPOS method, followed by oocyte retrieval. We assessed and compared the results of COS and oocyte retrieval in both groups.

Although the number of gastric cancers in elderly is increasing with the aging population, the indications of surgical treatment depend on the individual cases and the decisions of doctors. We investigated the outcomes of gastrectomy in elderly patients aged 85 years and older who underwent surgery at our hospital. From 2014 to 2022, 72 cases of gastrectomy were performed in the elderly.

Modulation of somatosensory signal transmission in the primate cuneate nucleus during voluntary hand movement.

Primate hands house an array of mechanoreceptors and proprioceptors, which are essential for tactile and kinematic information crucial for daily motor action. While the regulation of these somatosensory signals is essential for hand movements, the specific central nervous system (CNS) location and mechanism remain unclear. Our study demonstrates the attenuation of somatosensory signals in the cuneate nucleus during voluntary movement, suggesting significant modulation at this initial relay station in the CNS.

Perspectives on surgical treatment for thymic epithelial tumors: a narrative review.

Background And Objective: Thymic epithelial tumors are relatively rare; thus, mostly retrospective studies and a few prospective randomized controlled trials have been conducted on the treatment and the biomarkers, with no standard therapy established. Indications for extended thymectomy, robot-assisted thoracic surgery, and multidisciplinary treatment are controversial. Here, we considered the prospects of surgical treatment and the possibility of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment for thymic epithelial tumors.

Association between preoperative white matter hyperintensities and postoperative new ischemic lesions on magnetic resonance imaging in patients with cognitive decline after carotid endarterectomy.

Although cognitive decline after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is mainly related to postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion, approximately 30% of patients with cognitive decline do not have postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion. In patients with acute ischemic events, the development of cognitive decline after such events is associated with the presence of chronic cerebral white matter hyperintensities (WMHs). The present prospective observational study aimed to determine whether preoperative WMHs and postoperative new ischemic lesions (PNILs) are associated with cognitive decline after CEA in patients without cerebral hyperperfusion after CEA.

The SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex consists of more than ten component proteins that form a large protein complex of >1 MDa.
