A 33-year-old man with nephrotic syndrome and rapid deterioration of renal function showed curious glomerular morphological abnormalities. Ballooning of the glomerular capillaries due to a substance accumulated in the capillary lumina and mesangiolysis were prominent histological features. The deposits in the capillary lumen were positive for Sudan III staining, and also for beta-lipoprotein, apoprotein B and apoprotein E by immunofluorescent technique.

Cerebral atrophy and regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) were examined in 52 chronic stroke patients with dementia, pre-dementia or non-dementia (according to the Dementia Scale). The index of cerebral atrophy was estimated on computed tomography, and CBF was determined using 133Xe inhalation method. Cerebral atrophy indices were not significantly different among various degrees of dementia except a slightly increased cella media index in pre-dementia group.

The present paper investigated visual interaction in conversational dyads by using a larger range of gaze pattern measures associated with conversation than the total eye contact measure. Specifically, it aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the localized gaze pattern measure, which was scored for each subject by summing up gaze patterns for 3 s immediately prior to and following the end of the interviewer's utterance over three occasions. Twenty female students were interviewed by one male student for about 10 min.

The responsiveness of cerebral arteries to the changes in arterial carbon dioxide tension (paCO2) was studied in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and normotensive rats (NTRs). A freeze substitution method was applied for the preparation of pial and cortical arteries for morphometrical study. Hypercapnia was induced by giving 8% CO2, and hypocapnia was provided by hyperventilation.

The effects of approach by an unacquainted male to high- or low-neurotic (on the MPI scale) female subjects on physiological responses (heart rates and eye blinks) and self-rated affective/cognitive responses (tension, anxiety and apparent size of the male) were examined. (a) In the first trial, non-neurotic subjects showed an abrupt increase of HR near the personal space boundary, however showed a rapid habituation at the second and third trials. In contrast, self-rated affection (tension and anxiety) increased gradually as the male approached, and habituation was slow at the later trials.

By substituting these values into a previously developed equation that was modified by the authors, the hematocrit value was determined; and blood volume change was obtained from the change in this value.
