Doxorubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic widely used in cancer treatment. Although its antitumor efficacy appears to be dose dependent, its clinical use is greatly restricted by the development of cardiotoxicity associated with apoptosis. Although caveolin-1, the major structural protein in caveolae, can positively or negatively regulate apoptosis depending on the stimulus or cell types, the contribution of caveolin-1 to doxorubicin-induced apoptosis remains unknown.

Development of the mammalian telencephalon is precisely organized by a combination of extracellular signaling events derived from signaling centers and transcription factor networks. Using gene expression profiling of the developing mouse dorsal telencephalon, we found that the DM domain transcription factor Dmrta2 (doublesex and mab-3-related transcription factor a2) is involved in the development of the dorsal telencephalon. Consistent with its medial-high/lateral-low expression pattern in the dorsal telencephalon, Dmrta2 null mutants demonstrated a dramatic reduction in medial cortical structures such as the cortical hem and the choroid plexus, and a complete loss of the hippocampus.

The absorption, metabolism, and excretion of imidafenacin [KRP-197/ONO-8025, 4-(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)-2,2-diphenylbutanamide], a new antimuscarinic drug developed for treatment of overactive bladder, were assessed in six healthy male subjects after a single oral administration of 0.25 mg of [(14)C]imidafenacin (approximately 46 microCi). The highest radioactivity in the plasma was observed at 1.

Background: The use of a new end-fire type laparoscopic US probe with a forward-viewing convex-array transducer allows the caudate lobe of the liver to be accessed. This study evaluated the preliminary results of treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma in the caudate lobe by using this new instrument.

Methods: Three patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in the caudate lobe were selected.

We encountered a patient with sporadic acute hepatitis E who had not traveled to areas endemic for hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection and may have been infected in Japan. The patient was a 47-year-old male who had no history of blood transfusion or contact with travelers to hepatitis E-endemic regions or unspecified individuals. The disease presented with general malaise, fever, and brown urine as chief complaints in April 2002.

Background: Management of cesarean section with spinal anesthesia is often accompanied with intraoperative nausea and pain. In a randomized controlled study, we explored the effect of intrathecal fentanyl on the characteristics of subarachnoid block in patients undergoing cesarean section.

Methods: Twenty-four healthy parturients scheduled for elective Cesarean section were allocated to receive either fentanyl 0.

The pharmacokinetics and metabolism of SNI-2011 ((+/-)-cis-2-methylspiro[1,3-oxathiolane-5,3'-quinuclidine]monohydrochloride hemihydrate, cevimeline, CAS 153504-70-2), a novel muscarinic acetylcholine receptor agonist developed for the treatment of Sjögen's syndrome, were investigated in six healthy volunteers after a single oral administration of 14C-SNI-2011. After administration, plasma concentrations of the radioactivity and SNI-2011 reached to Cmax at approximately 2 h, and then decreased with t 1/2 of 9 and 4 h, respectively. Cmax and AUC0-infinity of the radioactivity in plasma were 2.
