Transsynaptic mapping of mushroom body output neurons.

The mushroom body (MB) is a well-characterized associative memory structure within the brain. Analyzing MB connectivity using multiple approaches is critical for understanding the functional implications of this structure. Using the genetic anterograde transsynaptic tracing tool, Tango, we identified divergent projections across the brain and convergent downstream targets of the MB output neurons (MBONs).

Wiring a complex brain requires many neurons with intricate cell specificity, generated by a limited number of neural stem cells. central brain lineages are a predetermined series of neurons, born in a specific order. To understand how lineage identity translates to neuron morphology, we mapped 18 central brain lineages.
