Background: Prescribed fires play a critical role in reducing the intensity and severity of future wildfires by systematically and widely consuming accumulated vegetation fuel. While the current probability of prescribed fire escape in the United States stands very low, their consequential impact, particularly the large wildfires they cause, raises substantial concerns. The most direct way of understanding this trade-off between wildfire risk reduction and prescribed fire escapes is to explore patterns in the historical prescribed fire records.

Fire exclusion over the last two centuries has driven a significant fire deficit in the forests of western North America, leading to widespread changes in the composition and structure of these historically fire-adapted ecosystems. Fuel treatments have been increasingly applied over the last few decades to mitigate fire hazard, yet it is unclear whether these fuel-focused treatments restore the fire-adapted conditions and species that will allow forests to persist into the future. A vital prerequisite of restoring fire-adaptedness is ongoing establishment of fire-tolerant tree species, and both the type and reoccurrence of fuel treatments are likely to strongly influence stand trajectories.

Marine algae extracts are an important area of potential drug discovery; however, nearly all studies to date have used non-fluorescent-based methods to determine changes in target cell activity. Many of the most robust immunological and cellular analyses rely on fluorescent probes and readouts, which can be problematic when the algae extract is fluorescent itself. Fire suppression and past selective logging of large trees have fundamentally changed frequent-fire-adapted forests in California. The culmination of these changes produced forests that are vulnerable to catastrophic change by wildfire, drought, and bark beetles, with climate change exacerbating this vulnerability. This case report aims to highlight the importance of keeping catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) high on the list of differentials in patients with lupus who present with digital ischemia and to understand the workup and treatment of the disease. Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome is a life-threatening variant of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), and it is distinguished on the APS spectrum by its increased intensity and extent of thrombotic outcomes. Less than 1% of patients with APS develop CAPS and the demographic of patients affected are primarily females, 37 ± 14 years old, and have underlying primary APS or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Phytoplankton primary production in the Arctic Ocean has been increasing over the last two decades. In 2019, a record spring bloom occurred in Fram Strait, characterized by a peak in chlorophyll that was reached weeks earlier than in other years and was larger than any previously recorded May bloom. Here, we consider the conditions that led to this event and examine drivers of spring phytoplankton blooms in Fram Strait using in situ, remote sensing, and data assimilation methods.

Prescribed (Rx) burns are conducted on days when the meteorological thresholds of maximum air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speeds are all met (burn window) in order to ensure safe Rx burn practices. Limited burn windows have been consistently identified as one of the most important constraints for conducting Rx burns in California. Although the number of natural fluorinated compounds is very small, fluorinated pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals are numerous. F NMR spectroscopy has a great potential for the structure elucidation of fluorinated organic molecules, starting with their production by chemical or chemoenzymatic reactions, through monitoring their structural integrity, to their biotic and abiotic transformation and ultimate degradation in the environment. Additionally, choosing to incorporate F into any organic molecule opens a convenient route to study reaction mechanisms and kinetics.

Addressing limitations of the existing NMR techniques for the structure determination of mono-fluorinated compounds, we have developed methodology that uses F as the focal point of this process. The proposed F-centred NMR analysis consists of a complementary set of broadband, phase-sensitive NMR experiments that utilise the substantial sensitivity of F and its far reaching couplings with H and C to obtain a large number of NMR parameters. The assembled H, C and F chemical shifts, values of , , and coupling constants and the size of C induced F isotopic shifts constitute a rich source of information that enables structure elucidation of fluorinated moieties and even complete structures of molecules.

We explore how renewable electricity production influences nuclear energy and fossil fuel use in the electricity sector for 109 nations from 1960-2015 and how such patterns change over time. We find that although a one-unit increase in the number of kWh produced from renewable sources does not appear to displace an equivalent number of kWh from fossil fuels, such an increase is associated with an equivalent reduction in the number of kWh drawn from nuclear sources between 1960 and 2015. However, further analyses indicate that there has been a trend toward displacement of fossil fuel sources by renewables, as well as an attenuation of the displacement of nuclear sources by renewables, since the late 1990s in nations with the capacity for nuclear electricity production.

To understand peatland carbon-cycling processes ultimately requires the ability to track changes occurring on the molecular-level. In this study, we profile a peat core taken from the world's largest blanket bog, Flow Country, Scotland, using physicochemical properties, ATR-FTIR, solid/liquid-state NMR, and solid/liquid-state FT-ICR-MS. Air-dried peat and labile and recalcitrant peat extracts, including pore water dissolved organic matter (PW-DOM), are analyzed and the merits of each technique are discussed.

Gestational choriocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm of pregnancy that is often undiagnosed until the advanced stage manifests with metastatic complications. Herein, we present a case of a 22-year-old young woman with metastatic gestational choriocarcinoma with unidentified primary origin, who presented with haemoptysis as a chief problem in her third trimester.
