Particulate matter (PM, diameter < 10 μm) and Diesel exhaust particles (DEP) exposure can cause severe respiratory disorders. This investigation explored the protective effects of Reliea® (RelA), combination of Codonopsis lanceolata and Chaenomeles sinensis extract, against airway inflammation related to PMD exposure. RelA treatment suppressed reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide release, cytokine expression (IL-6, IL-1β, iNOS, CXCL-2, MCP-1, and TNF-α), and the related inflammatory mechanisms in PM-induced alveolar macrophage cells.

Unlabelled: Exposure to air pollution poses a risk to human respiratory health, and a preventive and therapeutic remedy against fine dust-induced respiratory disease is needed.

Background/objectives: The respiratory-protective effects of (LM) against airway inflammation were evaluated in a mouse model exposed to a fine dust mixture of diesel exhaust particles and particulate matter with a diameter of less than 10 µm (PM10D).

Methods: To induce airway inflammation, PM10D was intranasally injected into BALB/c mice three times a day for 12 days, and LM extracts were given orally once per day.

Securinega suffruticosa (SS) has well-known antioxidant, anti-vascular inflammation, and anti-bone resorption effects; however, the effects of SS in atopic dermatitis (AD) remain unknown. We examined the effects of SS on AD via application of Dermatophagoides farinae extract (DfE) to the ears and skin of NC/Nga mice. As a result of SS administration, DfE-induced AD mice had reduced ear thickness, epidermal thickness, scratching behavior, and transepidermal water loss.

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) causes considerable breathing-related health risks. fruit is a traditional remedial plant used in Korea and China to treat respiratory diseases. Our recently published study showed that extract (SGE) ameliorated airway inflammation in lipopolysaccharide- and cigarette-smoke-induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in mice.

We studied the activities of extracts (SGE) on airway inflammation in a mouse model of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) stimulated by cigarette smoke extract (CSE) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), as well as in LPS-treated human bronchial epithelial cell line (BEAS-2B). SGE improved the viability of LPS-incubated BEAS-2B cells and inhibited the expression and production of inflammatory cytokines. SGE also attenuated the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling activated by LPS stimulation in BEAS-2B cells.

In traditional medicine, Miquel seed has been used to treat gout and hyperuricemia-related symptoms by enhancing kidney functions. Allopurinol is the most commonly used drug to treat hyperuricemia; however, the drug has many adverse effects. Combining allopurinol with another compound could reduce the need for high doses and result in improved safety.

This study examined the anti-obesity effects of a (leaf) and root mixture (BS21), and its underlying mechanisms of action, in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. Mice were fed a HFD with BS21 (100, 200, or 400 mg/kg) for 9 weeks. BS21 reduced body weight, white adipose tissue (WAT) and liver weights, liver lipid accumulation, and adipocyte size.

Article Synopsis
  • * Four main phloroglucinols were isolated during the study, with flavaspidic acid AP exhibiting the strongest inhibitory effect on XO, showing an effectiveness comparable to the standard drug allopurinol.
  • * The presence of specific acetyl groups in these compounds is essential for their XO inhibitory activity, and the high concentration of these potent inhibitors in the rhizomes suggests potential for developing treatments for gout.

Atopic dermatitis is a persistent inflammatory skin disorder. fruits (monk fruit or nahangwa in Korean, NHG) are used as a natural sweetener and as a traditional medicine for the treatment of asthma and bronchitis. We evaluated the activity of residual extract (NHGR) on allergic inflammation of atopic dermatitis in a mite antigen extract (DfE)-treated NC/Nga murine model and in vitro.

To investigate the anti-obesity effects and underlying mechanism of BS21, a combination of leaves and roots was used to investigate the effects of BS21 on adipogenesis, lipogenesis, and browning in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The expression of adipocyte-specific genes was observed via Western blot, and the BS21 chemical profile was analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). BS21 treatment inhibited adipocyte differentiation and reduced the expression of the adipogenic proteins peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP-α), and adipocyte protein 2 (aP2), as well as the lipogenic proteins sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c (SREBP-1c) and fatty-acid synthase (FAS).

Background: Alpinia oxyphylla is a well-known traditional medicine used in China and Korea to treat intestinal disorders, urosis, diuresis, and chronic glomerulonephritis.

Purpose: We investigated the anti-hyperuricemic effects of Alpinia oxyphylla seed extract (AE), and the underlying mechanisms of action through in vitro and in vivo studies.

Methods: We evaluated levels of uric acid in the serum and urine, the expression of renal urate transport proteins, and levels of inflammatory cytokines in potassium oxonate (PO)-induced hyperuricemic rats.

Crocin, a major constituent of , is a natural colorant carotenoid compound that has been reported to have anti-inflammatory effects. This study investigated the therapeutic effects of crocin on mice with atopic dermatitis induced by crude extract, which is a common environmental allergen in house dust that causes atopic dermatitis in humans. Crocin application ameliorated crude extract-induced atopic dermatitis symptoms by inhibiting the dermatitis severity score, ear thickness, and serum immunoglobulin E levels in NC/Nga mice.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Bleomycin (BLM) contributes to the induction of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis in animals. Although skin and lung tissue inflammation is closely related in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases, a proper animal model for investigating the relationship between skin and lung inflammation is lacking.
