Frequency of MED12 mutations in phyllodes tumors: Inverse correlation with histologic grade.

Phyllodes tumor (PT) is a rare breast biphasic tumor with a potential risk of recurrence and metastasis. In this study, the frequency of MED12 mutations in 176 PTs (49 benign, 49 borderline, and 78 malignant) was determined and the prognostic effect of these mutations in malignant type PT was evaluated. Analysis of MED12 mutations was performed by Sanger sequencing targeting the hotspot mutation region (exon 2) of MED12.

Red cell distribution width as a novel predictor for clinical outcomes in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Aims: Elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) has been known to be associated with adverse long-term outcomes in patients with cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to evaluate relationship between RDW values and clinical outcomes in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF).

Methods And Results: We analysed 567 patients who were newly diagnosed as paroxysmal AF.

Comparison of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants and warfarin on clinical outcomes in atrial fibrillation patients with renal dysfunction.

Aims: We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety between non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) and warfarin in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients according to renal dysfunction.

Methods And Results: We analysed 1319 patients who had been taken oral anticoagulants. They were classified into patients taking NOACs (n = 326) and warfarin (n = 993).

Tristetraprolin suppresses the EMT through the down-regulation of Twist1 and Snail1 in cancer cells.

Inhibition of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-inducing transcription factors Twist and Snail prevents tumor metastasis but enhances metastatic growth. Here, we report an unexpected role of a tumor suppressor tristetraprolin (TTP) in inhibiting Twist and Snail without enhancing cellular proliferation. TTP bound to the AU-rich element (ARE) within the mRNA 3'UTRs of Twist1 and Snail1, enhanced the decay of their mRNAs and inhibited the EMT of cancer cells.

Au-Polypyrrole Framework Nanostructures for Improved Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Volatile Organic Compounds Gas Sensing.

In this paper, we propose an Au-polypyrrole (Ppy) nanorod gas sensor for the detection of volatile organic compound (VOC) gases. This gas sensor operates on the principle of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The Au-Ppy nanorods used in this experiment were synthesized using an anodic aluminum oxide template by the electrochemical deposition method.

Developmentally regulated GTP-binding protein 2 coordinates Rab5 activity and transferrin recycling.

The small GTPase Rab5 regulates the early endocytic pathway of transferrin (Tfn), and Rab5 deactivation is required for Tfn recycling. Rab5 deactivation is achieved by RabGAP5, a GTPase-activating protein, on the endosomes. Here we report that recruitment of RabGAP5 is insufficient to deactivate Rab5 and that developmentally regulated GTP-binding protein 2 (DRG2) is required for Rab5 deactivation and Tfn recycling.

Resveratrol Induces Glioma Cell Apoptosis through Activation of Tristetraprolin.

Tristetraprolin (TTP) is an AU-rich elements (AREs)-binding protein, which regulates the decay of AREs-containing mRNAs such as proto-oncogenes, anti-apoptotic genes and immune regulatory genes. Despite the low expression of TTP in various human cancers, the mechanism involving suppressed expression of TTP is not fully understood. Here, we demonstrate that Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene, Res), a naturally occurring compound, induces glioma cell apoptosis through activation of tristetraprolin (TTP).

Modelling control of Schistosoma haematobium infection: predictions of the long-term impact of mass drug administration in Africa.

Background: Effective control of schistosomiasis remains a challenging problem for endemic areas of the world. Given knowledge of the biology of transmission and past experience with mass drug administration (MDA) programs, it is important to critically evaluate the likelihood that MDA programs will achieve substantial reductions in Schistosoma prevalence. In implementing the World Health Organization Roadmap for Neglected Tropical Diseases it would useful for policymaking to model projections of the status of Schistosoma control in MDA-treated areas in the next 5-10 years.

First report of iliacus abscess caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Othmarschen.

The non-typhoidal bacterium Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Othmarschen (Salmonella Othmarschen) is a rare human pathogen. Abscess formation due to non-typhoidal Salmonella infections is a very rare complication in this antibiotic era. We report the first case of iliacus abscess after a short period of gastroenteritis which was caused by non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica belonging to group C1, serovar Othmarschen in a patient without any underlying conditions.

NTRK1 rearrangement in colorectal cancer patients: evidence for actionable target using patient-derived tumor cell line.

Background: We have investigated the incidence of NTRK1 rearrangements in metastatic gastrointestinal cancer patients and demonstrated the potential for clinical response of these patients to targeted therapy.

Methods: We prospectively collected tumor tissue specimens for one year and simultaneously generated patient-derived tumor cells (PDCs). Specimens were initially screened for TrkA protein expression using TrkA immunohistochemistry (IHC).

Acute Placental Villitis as Evidence of Fetal Sepsis: An Autopsy Case Report.

Acute placental villitis is very rare and believed to reflect overwhelming fetal sepsis in utero, commonly caused by Escherichia coli or group B streptococci. We present a case of intrauterine fetal death associated with acute placental villitis and acute necrotizing chorioamnionitis by early-onset group B streptococcal infection. A 36-year-old woman presented with decreased fetal movement and fever at 21 weeks of gestation.

Impaired Diastolic Recovery after Acute Myocardial Infarction as a Predictor of Adverse Events.

Background: To investigate the impact of left ventricular (LV) diastolic functional recovery on major adverse cardiac events (MACE) 6 months after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients with preserved LV systolic function.

Methods: A total 463 patients with preserved LV systolic function at 6 months after an AMI were divided into two groups based on the extent of diastolic recovery assessed by echocardiography: group I (n = 241) showed improving diastolic function and group II (n = 222) did not. MACE included death, recurrent myocardial infarction, and rehospitalization due to heart failure, and these events were compared with the patients' characteristics at baseline.

Myagropsis myagroides, a brown alga, showed strong anti-inflammatory activities in the previous studies. In this study, we isolated a strong anti-inflammatory compound, sargaquinoic acid (SQA), from M. myagroides and investigated the anti-inflammatory action using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.

Sargaquinoic Acid Inhibits TNF-α-Induced NF-κB Signaling, Thereby Contributing to Decreased Monocyte Adhesion to Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs).

Sargaquinoic acid (SQA) has been known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study investigated the effects of SQA isolated from Sargassum serratifolium on the inhibition of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced monocyte adhesion to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). SQA decreased the expression of cell adhesion molecules such as intracellular adhesion molecule-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 as well as chemotactic cytokines such as interleukin-8 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in TNF-α-treated HUVECs.

Radiodensity on serial chest X-rays for the diagnosis of foreign body aspiration in children.

Objective: To evaluate the utility of measuring lung radiodensity from chest X-ray for the diagnosis of foreign body aspiration.

Methods: Records of 59 children with foreign body aspiration were retrospectively reviewed. Lung radiodensity and radiodensity ratio (right/left lung radio density) before and after foreign body removal were measured.

Phlorofucofuroeckol B suppresses inflammatory responses by down-regulating nuclear factor κB activation via Akt, ERK, and JNK in LPS-stimulated microglial cells.

Microglial activation has been implicated in many neurological disorders for its inflammatory and neurotrophic effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of phlorofucofuroeckol B (PFF-B) isolated from Ecklonia stolonifera, on the production of inflammatory mediators in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated microglia. PFF-B decreased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 and the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins such as cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase in LPS-stimulated BV-2 cells.

Effects of cervical self-stretching on slow vital capacity.

[Purpose] This study investigated the effects of self-stretching of cervical muscles, because the accessory inspiratory muscle is considered to improve pulmonary function. [Subjects] The subjects were 30 healthy university students 19-21 years old who did not have any lung disease, respiratory dysfunction, cervical injury, or any problems upon cervical stretching. [Methods] Spirometry was used as a pulmonary function test to measure the slow vital capacity before and after stretching.

Myxoid dermatofibroma on a great toe: a case report.

Dermatofibroma is a common benign fibrohistiocytic tumor with many clinicopathological variants. Myxoid dermatofibroma is one of these variants, which is characterized by marked stromal mucin deposition. This report presents a case of myxoid dermatofibroma on a great toe that had been slowly growing for two years.

The Relationship among N-Terminal Pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide, High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein and Infarct Size in Patients with Acute ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction.

Background And Objectives: We sought to investigate the relationship between levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and the infarct size and left ventricular (LV) volume after acute myocardial infarction (MI).

Subjects And Methods: Eighty-six patients with acute ST-elevation MI underwent delayed enhancement multidetector computed tomography immediately after they underwent percutaneous coronary intervention to determine the infarct size. LV function and remodeling were assessed by echocardiography.

This randomized controlled trial study aimed to investigate the effects of a lifestyle intervention on metabolic syndrome (MetS) among middle-aged Koreans. A total of 243 middle-aged Koreans with MetS were randomly assigned to either of 2 types of lifestyle intervention for MetS and followed for 12 months. Health examinations and interventions were implemented at 16 regional branch facilities of a Korean medical institution from 2010, following the NCEP-ATP III criteria and recommendations.

Pre-activated human mesenchymal stromal cells in combination with doxorubicin synergistically enhance tumor-suppressive activity in mice.

Background Aims: Previously, we showed that human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) were activated to express tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) upon TNF-α stimulation, induced cell death in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) MDA-MB-231 cells (MDA), and RNA released from apoptotic MDA further increased TRAIL expression in hMSCs. This feed-forward stimulation increased apoptosis in MDA cells. Here, we tested whether TRAIL-expressing hMSCs, in combination with a sub-toxic-dose of a chemotherapy drug doxorubicin, would overcome TRAIL resistance and create synergistic effects on targeting metastatic TNBC.
