Cowden syndrome, also known as multiple hamartoma syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by multiple hamartomatous tumors of ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal origin. A 47-year-old woman had a skin-colored plaque on the left foot. She had total abdominal hysterectomy due to uterine leiomyoma at the age of 35, and had modified radical mastectomy due to right breast cancer at 38.

Secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) can be associated with various diseases including infections and lymphoma. The clinical findings of HLH can be explained by an increased production of cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). As not all the patients with infection or lymphoma have secondary HLH, we investigated the relationship between susceptibility to secondary HLH and TNF-alpha promoter polymorphisms to identify genetic factors of secondary HLH.

Insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1) is an adaptor protein for insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling and it is presumed associated with cancer development, progression or clinical outcome of patients harboring solid tumors. Therefore, we investigated by immunohistochemistry, the expression of IRS-1 in the tumor tissues from 94 patients who were diagnosed as stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and had undergone a curative lung resection. The relationships between its intratumoral expression and various clinical parameters were explored.

To find out the genetic factors of outbreak of thyroid gland disease, we developed the thyroid gland decision-making system, which processes the metabolic profile in steroid hormone map using a statistical method. Metabolic profile is a measured data of lots of mixed materials that includes not only known metabolites, but also unknown ones, which is estimated to have an influence on the thyroid gland disease. Therefore, to develop thyroid gland disease decision-making system, analyzing metabolic profile containing multi-materials would be useful for diagnosing thyroid gland disease.

A convenient and safe method for the synthesis of ammonia triborane is reported along with studies of its hydrolytic reactions that demonstrate ammonia triborane is both soluble and stable in water but that upon the addition of acid or an appropriate transition metal catalyst it rapidly releases hydrogen. These studies indicate that ammonia triborane is a promising material for chemical hydrogen storage applications.

Objective: A technique is presented for catheterization of an obstructed bronchus when use of a conventional vascular catheter has failed. In some cases, strictures become too stenotic or blunt for passage of a guidewire, making further intervention impossible. We attempted to negotiate a stricture opening using a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) dilator with a guidewire inside it.

Objective: To examine the catabolic pathways mediated by Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands in human osteoarthritic (OA) chondrocytes.

Methods: The presence of TLRs in OA and non-OA articular cartilage was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. The regulation of TLR messenger RNA (mRNA) by interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) was analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a developed drug delivery system containing OK-432 through in vitro and animal study. An OK-432-impregnated polycarbonate/polyurethane stent membrane was used to develop a drug delivery system (DDS) enabling the locoregional release of OK-432. Polyethyleneglycol was used as a detergent and porosity generator.

Retinoic acids, which have shown potential chemopreventive and therapeutic activities for several neoplastic diseases in vitro, modulate the growth-promoting and anti-apoptotic activities of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), in part by influencing the expression of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3). This study sought to investigate the effect of 9-cis retinoic acid (9cRA) on the expression of IGFBP-3 and the underlying mechanisms involving retinoic acid receptor-beta (RAR-beta). The pharmacologic activity of 9cRA was characterized by monitoring target modulation as well as by evaluating the underlying mechanisms in NSCLC cells.

Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is a clinical disorder characterized by persistent eosinophilia and systemic involvement, in which a specific causative factor for the eosinophilia cannot be verified during a certain period of time. There have been only a few reported cases of this syndrome associated with malignant lymphoma. We report a case of peripheral T-cell lymphoma-unspecified with hypereosinophilic syndrome.

Furonaphthoquinone compounds have been reported to exhibit anticancer, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The molecular basis for these diverse properties is not known. 2-Methyl-2-(2-methylpropenyl)-2,3-dihydronaphthoquinone [2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione (NFD-37) is a synthetic furonaphthoquinone compound.

This study was performed to investigate the impact of intima-media thickness (IMT) of radial artery on early failure of radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Ninety uremic patients undergoing radiocephalic AVF operation were included in this study. During the operation, 10-mm long partial arterial walls were removed with elliptical form for microscopic analysis.

It has been demonstrated that spider mites such as the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) are important allergens for fruit farmers. A total of 2,467 adults (795 metropolitan urban, 788 non-metropolitan urban, and 884 rural subjects) were enrolled. They responded to the questionnaire, and underwent methacholine bronchial provocation tests as well as skin prick tests to locally common aeroallergens including the two-spotted spider mite.

Objective: To examine the effects of intraarticular induction of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) expression in adult mice.

Methods: We used somatic mosaic analysis in a novel transgenic mouse with an inducible IL-1beta transcription unit. Transgene activation was induced by Cre recombinase in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) of adult transgenic mice (conditional knockin model).

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)alpha, a member of the ligand-activated nuclear receptor superfamily, plays an important role in lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis and is highly expressed in the kidney. The present studies were aimed at determining the role of PPARalpha in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy using PPARalpha-knockout mice and cultured murine mesangial cells. Diabetes was induced using a low-dose streptozotocin protocol in 8-week-old male 129 SvJ PPARalpha-knockout and wild-type mice.

The design of enzymes with new functions and properties has long been a goal in protein engineering. Here, we report a strategy to change the catalytic activity of an existing protein scaffold. This was achieved by simultaneous incorporation and adjustment of functional elements through insertion, deletion, and substitution of several active site loops, followed by point mutations to fine-tune the activity.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is frequent in the West, but rare in Korea. In this study, the frequency of chromosome aberration in Korean CLL patients was examined by applying interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Conventional cytogenetic test and FISH were performed on bone marrow aspirates obtained from 16 CLL patients.

Granulocytosis occurs in 40% of patients with lung and gastrointestinal cancers, 20% of patients with breast cancer, 30% of patients with brain tumor and ovarian cancer and 10% of patients with renal cell carcinoma. Granulocytosis occurs because of production of G-CSF, GM-CSF and IL-6. Uterine cervical carcinoma with granulocytosis as a paraneoplastic syndrome, however, has been rarely reported.
