Safety and Efficacy of a Large-Bore Biliary Metallic Stent for Malignant Biliary Obstruction.

Unlabelled: Self-expandable metallic stents (SEMSs) are typically inserted in patients with unresectable malignant biliary obstruction. However, SEMSs are susceptible to occlusion. To overcome this issue, we developed a large-bore, dumbbell-shaped, fully covered SEMS (FCSEMS-L) and compared its efficacy and safety with those of a conventional FCSEMS (FCSEMS-C) in patients with malignant biliary obstruction.

Peri-operative Inflammatory Marker as a Predictive Factor for Prolonged Post-operative Ileus After Gastrectomy for Gastric Cancer.

Background/aims: Although prolonged post-operative ileus (PPOI) is an important factor for the prolonged length of post-operative hospital stay, there is still a lack of effective predictive and therapeutic methods for PPOI. Previous studies reported that increased inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) level and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), are associated with malignancies. The aim of our study is to elucidate the association between peri-operative inflammatory markers and PPOI after gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Organizing an in-class hackathon to correct PDF-to-text conversion errors of Genomics & Informatics 1.0.

This paper describes a community effort to improve earlier versions of the full-text corpus of Genomics & Informatics by semi-automatically detecting and correcting PDF-to-text conversion errors and optical character recognition errors during the first hackathon of Genomics & Informatics Annotation Hackathon (GIAH) event. Extracting text from multi-column biomedical documents such as Genomics & Informatics is known to be notoriously difficult. The hackathon was piloted as part of a coding competition of the ELTEC College of Engineering at Ewha Womans University in order to enable researchers and students to create or annotate their own versions of the Genomics & Informatics corpus, to gain and create knowledge about corpus linguistics, and simultaneously to acquire tangible and transferable skills.

Effect of histologic differences between biopsy and final resection on treatment outcomes in early gastric cancer.

Background And Study Aims: Biopsy-based histologic diagnosis is important in determining the treatment strategy for early gastric cancer (EGC). However, there are few studies on how histologic discrepancy may affect patients' treatment outcomes. We aimed to investigate the impact of histopathologic differences between biopsy and final specimens from endoscopic resection (ER) or gastrectomy on treatment outcomes in patients with EGC.

Factors affecting survival after concurrent chemoradiation therapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: a retrospective study.

Background: Concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT) followed by hepatic arterial infusional chemotherapy (HAIC) was reported to be effective for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein thrombosis. However, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is not preferred in this setting. The aim of this study was to assess the factors affecting survival after CCRT, including additional TACE during repeated HAIC.

Incidence and risk factors of delayed postpolypectomy bleeding in patients with chronic liver disease.

Objective: Hepatologists and colonoscopists often hesitate to perform a colonoscopic polypectomy in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD), especially those with cirrhosis, because of the risk of postpolypectomy bleeding (PPB). We aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors of delayed PPB after a colonoscopic polypectomy in patients with CLD.

Materials And Methods: In total, 152 patients with CLD who underwent colonoscopic polypectomy from December 2005 to December 2012 were retrospectively reviewed.

Positive and negative associations of HLA class I alleles with allopurinol-induced SCARs in Koreans.

Recent investigations suggest genetic susceptibility of allopurinol-induced severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs). However, the strength of association was variable according to phenotypes and ethnic backgrounds. To explore genetic markers for allopurinol-induced SCARs in Koreans, we genotyped human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I alleles of 25 cases of allopurinol-induced SCARs (20 cases of drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome and five cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis) and 57 patients tolerant to allopurinol.

Hepatic angiosarcoma manifested as recurrent hemoperitoneum.

Angiosarcoma is a rare tumor that account for less than 1% of all sarcomas. Although hepatic angiosarcoma usually presents with unspecific symptoms, it rapidly progresses and has a high mortality. We report a rare case of primary hepatic angiosarcoma manifested as recurrent hemoperitoneum.
