Rationale: Pulmonary sequestration, which can be divided into 2 main types: intralobar pulmonary sequestration (IPS) and extralobar pulmonary sequestration, is an uncommon congenital condition for which surgical resection is usually indicated. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, as compared with open thoracotomy, has increasingly become the preferred operative procedure in the treatment of PS, owing to less postoperative pain and faster recovery. This report describes a rare and challenging case with a giant IPS undergoing video-assisted thoracic lobectomy.

Background: Empyema is a severe complication following pneumonectomy that is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Although there are a wide variety of treatment options, successful management remains challenging when this condition is combined with a large cavity in very thin patients who had previously undergone a posterolateral thoracotomy.

Case Summary: We reported the case of a thin, 63-year-old man with a progressive pulmonary cyst who underwent left pneumonectomy posterolateral thoracotomy 23 years ago.

Background: Bronchopleural fistula (BPF) refers to an abnormal channel between the pleural space and the bronchial tree. It is a potentially fatal postoperative complication after pulmonary resection and a complex challenge for thoracic surgeons because many patients with BPF ultimately develop refractory empyema, which is difficult to manage and has a major impact on quality of life and survival. Therefore, an operative intervention combined with conservative and endoscopic therapies may be required to control infection completely, to occlude BPF, and to obliterate the empyema cavity during treatment periods.

Objective: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation of bilateral Taichong (LR 3), Yan-glingquan (GB 34), Waiguan (TE 5) and Chize (LU 5) on pain and post-surgical gastrointestinal reactions in patients undergoing pneumectomy.

Methods: Sixty patients with pneumectomy were randomly divided into EA group (30 cases) and control group (30 cases). For patients of the EA group, EA stimulation (2 Hz, 3 - 5 mA) was applied to bilateral LR 3, GB 34, TE 5 and LU 5 once every 12 h in the following two days after the surgery.

The direct aldol reactions catalyzed by chiral dendritic catalysts derived from N-prolylsulfonamide gave the corresponding products in high isolated yields (up to 99%) with excellent anti diastereoselectivities (up to >99:1) and enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee) in water. In addition, catalyst 1e may be recovered by precipitation and filtration and reused for at least five times without loss of catalytic activity.
