Aim: To confirm the changes in proteins related with hypoxia-induced retinal cell death and to assess the effects of resveratrol (Res).

Methods: The therapeutic effect of Res was verified using an ischemic/reperfusion (I/R) model and a hypoxia modelin retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) . Death of RGCs were confirmed by TUNEL assay.

Purpose: Acute and chronic hypertension may have different pathophysiological mechanisms in the retina. Here, we compared the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL)/ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness ratios of patients with 'relieved' severe hypertensive retinopathy (relieved HTNR) and chronic hypertension without retinopathy (chronic HTN) to those of normal controls.

Methods: We performed cross-sectional study.

This study investigated the effect of emotional stability (ES) on insomnia through anxiety in preoperative patients with cataracts. Fifty-four subjects completed a self-questionnaire that included the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) for ES, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS). Pathway analysis was performed to analyze the mediating effects of ES, the anxiety subscale scores of the HADS, and the ISI scores.

Purpose: We report the occurrence of an extensive submacular hemorrhage after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C in a patient with an occult choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM).

Patients And Methods: A 66-year-old man had a 3-year history of primary open-angle glaucoma in the left eye, which had been treated with topical antiglaucoma medication. The patient had age-related macular degeneration with an occult CNVM, for which he had received 5 intravitreal injections of ranibizumab and 5 intravitreal injections of bevacizumab in the left eye over a 3-year period.

Purpose: To investigate the central macular thickness (CMT) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in eyes with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease associated with optic disc swelling and serous retinal detachment through a 24-month follow-up period.

Methods: We prospectively investigated 28 eyes of 14 treatment-naïve patients with acute VKH disease associated with optic disc swelling and serous retinal detachment and 30 eyes of 15 normal individuals to compare changes in the CMT and average RNFL thickness.

Results: The CMT was significantly lower in the eyes of the VKH group at 12 and 24 months.

Purpose: Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury induces apoptosis in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Resveratrol (Res) is a potent natural antioxidant with beneficial effects in many ocular diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Because caspase-3 expression is highly correlated with activation of the apoptotic pathway, the present study aimed to determine whether Res regulates the expression of caspase-3 using an I/R retinal injury mouse model.

Purpose: To evaluate differences in self-identity in patients diagnosed with strabismus, patients who underwent strabismus surgery, and healthy control individuals.

Methods: Self-identity testing was done during a military service physical examination. There were three subject groups: subjects with strabismus (group 1), subjects who had undergone corrective strabismus surgery (group 2), and subjects free of strabismus (group 3).

Background/aims: The present study addresses the role of tonicity response element binding protein (TonEBP) in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death in diabetic retinopathy and the impact of Aralia elata extract on the TonEBP/RGC interaction.

Methods: Diabetes was induced in C57BL/6 mice by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ). Control mice received phosphate-buffered saline.

The present study characterizes the effects of resveratrol (Res) on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secretion in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. ARPE-19 cells were treated with CoCl2, a hypoxia mimetic agent. CoCl2 treatment increased protein levels of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and CXC-chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4), and secretion of VEGF.

Purpose: To describe diurnal variation in choroidal thickness (CT) and retinal thickness (RT) of the nine Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) macular subfields determined using swept-source optical coherence tomography.

Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 24 healthy Korean volunteers who underwent two sequential measurements of a randomly selected eye at 9 a.m.

Purpose: To investigate the inhibitory effect of 0.02% mitomycin C on eyelash regrowth when injected to the eyelash hair follicle immediately after radiofrequency ablation.

Methods: We prospectively included 21 trichiasis patients from June 2011 to October 2012.

Purpose: To report a case series of patients with novel forkhead box CI (FOXC1) mutations in a Korean family with Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS).

Methods: Four members of the same family underwent complete ophthalmologic and systemic examinations and genetic analysis. Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood leukocytes, and all coding exons with flanking intronic regions of the FOXC1 and pituitary homeobox 2 genes were amplified using PCR, and sequenced.

Purpose: To evaluate prospectively whether anti-glaucomatic drugs administered prior to intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injection bevacizumab (Avastin,® Roche) or ranibizumab (Lucentis,® Novartis) prevents intraocular hypertension after the injection.

Subjects And Methods: In total, 166 patients (175 eyes) scheduled for intravitreal anti-VEGF injection treatment were prophylactically treated 1 hour before the procedure with Dorzolamide/Timolol (Cosopt,® MSD) (Group 1, 53 eyes) or Brinzolamide/Timolol (Elazop,® Alcon) (Group 2, 84 eyes) or left untreated (Group 3, 29 eyes). Intraocular pressure was analyzed 5 minutes prior to the injection, every 5 minutes for 30 minutes after the procedure, and 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, and 1 month after the procedure.

To report a case of invasive aspergillosis presenting as acute angle closure glaucoma. A 72-year-old male patient visited our clinic with decreased visual acuity and ocular pain on the right eye lasting for 3 d. His intraocular pressure was 42 mmHg in the right eye and 18 mmHg in the left eye.

We report the successful removal of a retrobulbar foreign body using a transcranial approach in a 63-year-old patient with a penetrating injury to the left eye. Initial ocular examination revealed a corneoscleral laceration, hyphema, a traumatic cataract, and vitreous hemorrhage. Visual acuity consisted only of the perception of hand motion.
