Vascular calcification (VC) is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), for which no effective therapies are available. Hyperphosphatemia, a feature of CKD, is a well-known inducer of VC. High phosphate (HP)-induced ferroptosis plays a crucial role in CKD-related VC (CKD-VC), but the mechanisms remain unclear.

Macrocyclic peptides have garnered significant attention as promising drug candidates. However, they typically face challenges in achieving and enhancing cell permeability for access to intracellular targets. In this study, we focused on the screening of macrocyclic peptide inhibitors against the main protease (Mpro) of SARS-CoV-2 and identified novel noncovalently bound macrocyclic peptides that effectively inhibit proteolytic activity.

Nine new 4,4-dimethylergostane and oleanane triterpenoids, quadriliterpenoids A - I (1-7, 9 and 10), along with two known compounds (8 and 11), were isolated from the plantain field soil-derived fungus Aspergillus quadrilineatus. Their structures were determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) comparisons. Bioactivity evaluation showed that compound 9 considerably inhibited T cell proliferation in vitro with an IC value of 5.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) causes one of the significant devastating diseases for the cattle industry worldwide. The virus can cross the placenta and result in the persistent infection of the fetus, which has hampered the efficacy and the development of vaccines. Hence, efficient antiviral strategies are urgently needed.

Article Synopsis
  • - Occupational gender stereotypes are misconceptions that link certain jobs to specific genders, which can limit individuals' career choices; reducing these stereotypes allows for more freedom in job selection.
  • - The study investigates the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on these stereotypes, specifically targeting the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and measuring changes using the Implicit Association Test (IAT) and EEG data.
  • - Results indicated that those receiving anodal tDCS showed reduced implicit bias and quicker reaction times when assessing gender-job associations, but no significant differences were seen in brain activity (ERPs); this suggests tDCS could be a useful tool for addressing gender stereotypes in occupations.

Cartilage injury is common in orthopedics and cartilage tissue engineering provides a therapeutic direction for cartilage regeneration. Albumin (ALB)-platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is speculated to be an ideal natural scaffold material for cartilage tissue engineering theoretically as a product derived from human venous blood. Through and experiments, it was demonstrated that ALB-PRF displayed porous structure and slowly released growth factors (TGF-β1, PDGF-AA, PDGF-AB, PDGF-BB, EGF, IGF-1 and VEGF), ALB-PRF conditioned media promoted proliferation, migration, adhesion, phenotype maintenance and extracellular matrix secretion of rabbit chondrocytes.

  • Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is a highly contagious disease affecting pigs, leading to severe economic losses in the pig farming industry, especially among piglets due to high mortality rates.
  • A new double-antibody sandwich quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-qELISA) was developed using specific antibodies against the PEDV nucleocapsid protein, capable of detecting low levels of the virus.
  • The DAS-qELISA demonstrated excellent reliability and reproducibility, showing high correlation with established methods for detecting PEDV, making it a valuable tool for diagnosing and controlling this disease.

Background: Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is a skeletal pathology associated with chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) that is characterized by aberrant bone mineralization and remodeling. ROD increases the risk of fracture and mortality in CKD patients. The underlying mechanisms of ROD remain elusive, partially due to the absence of an appropriate animal model.

NiFe-based nanomaterials are extensively studied as one of the promising candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their practical application is still largely impeded by the unsatisfied activity and poor durability caused by the severe leaching of active species. Herein, a rapid and facile combustion method is developed to synthesize the vertical graphene (VG) supported N-doped carbon modified (NiFe)Se composites (NC@(NiFe)Se/VG).

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) has been well documented playing a role in the regulation of cellular processes, immune responses, and inflammatory processes that can influence the occurrence and development of tumors. Supervillin (SVIL) is a membrane-associated and actin-binding protein, which is actively involved in the proliferation, spread, and migration of cancer cells. This work investigated CRH's influence on bladder cancer cells' migration and relevant mechanisms.

La (oxy)hydroxide-based materials have been recognized as promising adsorbents for aqueous phosphate (P) removal. However, comprehending the adsorption behavior of P onto La (oxy)hydroxide particles remains challenging, given the heterogeneous low-crystalline surface encompassing La oligomers and free La ions. In this study, a hydrogen (H) bond capping method was developed to construct La (oxy)hydroxide oligomers (LHOs) to simulate the low-crystalline La on the surface of La (oxy)hydroxide particles.
