Article Synopsis
  • A hybrid simulation combines lattice-Boltzmann fluid flow and molecular dynamics to study star-like and crew-cut polymer micelles moving in a microchannel.
  • The study reveals that these micelles have two equilibrium positions that shift away from the center as the Reynolds number (Re) increases, unlike soft particles where blockage ratio is critical.
  • The findings indicate that the positioning of polymer micelles depends more on the specific dimensions of their core and shell than just their overall size, providing new insights for achieving micelle separation in fluid dynamics.

This paper introduces a method for characterizing the current noise of commercial constant-current sources (CCSs) using a free-induction-decay (FID) type optically pumped rubidium atomic magnetometer driven by a radio frequency magnetic field. We convert the sensitivity of the atomic magnetometer into the current noise of CCS by calibrating the coil constant. At the same time, the current noise characteristics of six typical commercial low-noise CCSs are compared.

Background: Stroke has been found to be highly correlated with the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index. The relation between the TyG index changes and stroke, however, has seldom been reported, and current researches mentioning the TyG index concentrate on individual values. We aimed to investigate whether the level and the change of TyG index was associated with the incidence of stroke.

Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) has been extensively used in tissue engineering, in which its surface hydrophilicity plays an important role. In this work, an efficient and green strategy has been developed to tailor surface hydrophilicity via alkali hydrolysis. On one hand, the ester bond in PLLA has been cleaved and generates carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, both of which are beneficial to the improvement of hydrophilicity.

A free-induction-decay (FID) type optically-pumped rubidium atomic magnetometer driven by a radio-frequency (RF) magnetic field is presented in this paper. Influences of parameters, such as the temperature of rubidium vapor cell, the power of pump beam, and the strength of RF magnetic field and static magnetic field on the amplitude and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the FID signal, have been investigated in the time domain and frequency domain. At the same time, the sensitivities of the magnetometer for the single-pass and the triple-pass probe beam cases have been compared by changing the optical path of the interaction between probe beam and atomic ensemble.

We measured the spin noise spectroscopy (SNS) of rubidium atomic ensemble with two different kinds of atomic vapor cells (filled with buffer gas or coated with paraffin film on the inner wall) and demonstrated the enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by using polarization squeezed state (PSS) of 795-nm light field with Stokes operator squeezed. The PSS is prepared by locking the relative phase between the squeezed vacuum state of light obtained with a sub-threshold optical parametric oscillator and the orthogonally polarized local oscillator beam by means of the quantum noise lock. Under the same conditions, the PSS can be employed not only to improve the SNR, but also to keep the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of SNS, compared with the case of using the polarization coherent state (PCS), enhancement of SNR is positively correlated with the squeezing level of the PSS.

This study proposed a rotary back extrusion (RBE) process for an open punch, which is used to produce high-performance 7075 aluminum alloy cup-shaped piece. The RBE experiment was carried out on the Gleeble-3500 testing machine at 400 °C and compared with the conventional back extrusion (CBE). The microstructure was analyzed by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and DEFORM-3D simulation software.

Roll forming can improve the material utilization rate and production efficiency of cups with a curved rotary profile, but there is no basis for the determination of forming limit. The DEFORM-3D software was used to simulate the roll forming of cups. The influence of the billet wall thickness and bottom thickness, coefficient of friction, radius of roller, and the fillet radius of the punch on the forming limit was studied, and the damage value and velocity vector were analyzed.

The quasi-static and low cycle fatigue tests of extruded 7075 Al alloy (Φ200 mm) were investigated in three directions: the extrusion direction (ED), the radial direction (RD), and 45° with ED (45°). Grain morphology analysis, texture measurement, and fatigue fracture characterization were conducted to discuss the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties. The experimental results showed that the ED specimen had higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and low cycle fatigue (LCF) properties, which were mainly attributed to the following three causes.

Grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations and adsorption experiments are combined to find the optimized carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays for gas adsorption at low pressures and 303 K. Bundles of 3D aligned double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) with inner diameter of 8 nm and different intertube distances were made experimentally. The experimental results show that decreasing intertube distance leads to a significant enhancement in carbon-dioxide (CO2) adsorption capacity at 1 bar.

Using both theory and experiment, we investigate the possibility of creating perfectly ordered block copolymer nanostructures on sparsely patterned substrates. Our study focuses on scrutinizing the appropriate pattern conditions to avoid undesired morphologies or defects when depositing cylinder-forming AB diblock copolymer thin films on the substrates which are mostly neutral with periodic stripe regions preferring the minority domain. By systematically exploring the parameter space using self-consistent field theory (SCFT), the optimal conditions for target phases are determined, and the effects of the chemical pattern period and the block copolymer film thickness on the target phase stability are also studied.

Flower-like particles (FLPs) with hierarchical surface architectures have recently attracted considerable attention due to their potentially wide application range. Hitherto, nearly all FLPs were fabricated using inorganic compounds, while versatile organic polymers have not received sufficient attention yet. Herein, we show the construction of novel organic, polymeric FLPs with diameters of 2.

We employ Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the interaction between an adsorbing linear flexible cationic polyelectrolyte and a ternary mixed fluid membrane containing neutral (phosphatidylcholine, PC), monovalent (phosphatidylserine, PS), and multivalent (phosphatidylinositol, PIP2) anionic lipids. We systematically explore the influences of polyelectrolyte chain length, polyelectrolyte charge density, polyelectrolyte total charge amount, and salt solution ionic strength on the static and dynamic properties of different anionic lipid species. Our results show that the multivalent PIP2 lipids dominate the polyelectrolyte-membrane interaction and competitively inhibit polyelectrolyte-PS binding.

Complex nanopatterns integrating diverse nanocomponents are crucial requirements for advanced photonics and electronics. Currently, such multicomponent nanopatterns are principally created by colloidal nanoparticle assembly, where large-area processing of highly ordered nanostructures raises significant challenge. We present multicomponent nanopatterns enabled by block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly, which offers device oriented sub-10-nm scale nanopatterns with arbitrary large-area scalability.

A highly efficient, ultralarge-area nanolithography that integrates block-copolymer lithography with single-step ZnO nanoimprinting is introduced. The UV-assisted imprinting of a photosensitive sol-gel precursor creates large-area ZnO topographic patterns with various pattern shapes in a single-step process. This straightforward approach provides a smooth line edge and high thermal stability of the imprinted ZnO pattern; these properties are greatly advantageous for further graphoepitaxial block-copolymer assembly.

We perform lattice Monte Carlo simulation using the bond-fluctuation model to examine the conformation and dynamic properties of a single small flexible ring polymer in the matrix of linear chains as functions of the degree of polymerization of the linear chains. The average conformation properties as gauged by the mean-square radius of gyration and asphericity parameter are insensitive to the chain length for all the chain lengths examined (30, 100, 300, and 1000). However, in the longer chain (300 and 1000) samples, there is an increased spread in the distribution of the value of these quantities, suggesting structural heterogeneity.
