Study on Exergy Analysis of the Soda Ash Production Process by the Ammonium Sulfate-Soda Method.

The exergy calculation, especially chemical exergy calculation, is very intricated in the soda ash production process by the ammonium sulfate-soda method because the gas-liquid reaction and salt precipitation reaction occur simultaneously with the electrolyte ionic reaction in the NaSO-NH-CO-HO electrolyte system. The main aim of this study is to propose a significant and novel approach to calculate the chemical exergy of an aqueous electrolyte system accompanied by gas-liquid reaction and salt precipitation reaction, based on the Pitzer equation. We simulated the soda ash production process using Aspen Plus and performed exergy analysis based on the thermodynamic data obtained from the simulation.

Macrophages can maintain gut immune homeostasis by driving clearance of infection, but also can prevent chronic inflammation and induce tissue repair. Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) levels in macrophages have been reported to be associated with the onset of severe colitis. Given that dysregulation of gut macrophages plays a significant role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), they represent a potential target for novel therapies.

South Korea is witnessing a notable increase in obesity rates among children and adolescents, despite various governmental interventions. Parents play a crucial role in preventing and managing pediatric obesity, as they are typically the primary observers of their child's weight and daily habits.

Clinical Characteristics of and Treatment Pattern for EGFR-Amplified Colorectal Cancer.

Purpose: To compare clinicopathologic features and clinical outcomes of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) based on EGFR amplification status.

Materials And Methods: Patients with mCRC who underwent next-generation sequencing using a targeted 244-gene panel from 2016 to 2021 were identified and screened for EGFR copy numbers. Cases with at least 5 copies were reviewed for tumor purity adjustment, and those with an adjusted copy number of ≥6 were defined as EGFR-amplified (EGFR amp+).

Cohort profile: Multicenter Networks for Ideal Outcomes of Rare Pediatric Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases in Korea (OUTSPREAD study).

Rare endocrine diseases are complex conditions that require lifelong specialized care due to their chronic nature and associated long-term complications. In Korea, a lack of nationwide data on clinical practice and outcomes has limited progress in patient care. Therefore, the Multicenter Networks for Ideal Outcomes of Pediatric Rare Endocrine and Metabolic Disease (OUTSPREAD) study was initiated.

Background: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) frequently metastasises to lymph nodes, with lymph node metastasis (LNM) occurring with high frequency in small, early-stage tumors. The present study examines the inverse l-shaped relationship between tumor size and the likelihood of LNM in patients diagnosed with PTC.

Methods: We performed a detailed retrospective cohort analysis of 48,021 cases of papillary thyroid cancer using data from the Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 1992 to 2019.

Background: Recent global trends indicate a rise in pediatric obesity, reflecting patterns also observed in South Korea. Given its significant impact on chronic disease prevalence in adulthood, pediatric obesity poses potential societal challenges. For pediatric obesity-related prevention or management programs in community level to operate effectively, there needs to be a clear understanding of barriers and facilitators of the programs.

Effects of Adjuvant Chemotherapy on Oncologic Outcomes in Patients With Stage ⅡA Rectal Cancer Above the Peritoneal Reflection Who Did Not Undergo Preoperative Chemoradiotherapy.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) on oncologic outcomes for patients with stage IIA upper rectal cancer and to investigate whether AC is associated with improved survival outcomes.

Methods: This retrospective study comprised 432 patients with rectal cancer above the peritoneal reflection who had undergone curative resection without preoperative chemoradiotherapy between 2008 and 2016. This study cohort was divided according to whether AC was received (AC group) or not (no-AC group).

Association between obstructive sleep apnea and risk of Benign vocal fold lesions: A nationwide 9-year follow-up cohort study.

Since obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects various parts of the body, there has been little interest about the effect of OSA on voice. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk of benign vocal fold lesions (BVFL) in OSA patients. This study used data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database.

Olaparib with or without bevacizumab versus bevacizumab plus a fluoropyrimidine as maintenance therapy in advanced colorectal cancer: The randomized phase 3 LYNK-003 study.

Background: The randomized, open-label, phase III LYNK-003 study assessed the efficacy of first-line maintenance olaparib, alone or in combination with bevacizumab, versus bevacizumab plus a fluoropyrimidine in participants with unresectable or metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). We present results of the prespecified interim futility analysis.

Methods: Eligible participants were ≥18 years of age with unresectable or mCRC that had not progressed after induction with first-line bevacizumab plus 5-fluorouracil plus oxaliplatin plus leucovorin (FOLFOX) or capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (CAPOX).

Child Opportunity Index and clinical characteristics at diabetes diagnosis in youth: type 1 diabetes versus type 2 diabetes.

Introduction: Among youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D), longitudinal poor glycemic control is associated with adverse socioeconomic conditions at the neighborhood level. Child Opportunity Index (COI), which encompasses measures of education, health, environment, social, and economic factors, is associated with obesity in youth but has not been evaluated in youth with new-onset T1D or type 2 diabetes (T2D). We hypothesized that lower COI would be associated with adverse clinical outcomes at diabetes diagnosis, and due to differing risk factors and pathophysiology, that youth with new-onset T2D would have lower COI than youth with T1D.
