This study determined whether left ventricular filling indexes obtained from the ACT method provide a reliable estimate of left ventricular diastolic filling. Self-biofeedback control of heart rate during exercise.

To improve cardiac adjustment to exercise, we developed a new self-biofeedback heart rate (HR) controller. Using this device, we analyzed time courses of HR, running speed (RS), stride length (ST) and pitch of gait (PI) in response to various preset HR levels in 7 normal human subjects. Rapidly disintegrating tablets prepared by the wet compression method: mechanism and optimization.

To make rapidly disintegrating tablets with sufficient mechanical integrity, tablets were prepared by compressing wet granules under low compression force and then drying the resulting wet mass in a circulating-air oven (wet compression method). Lactose with various particle sizes was used as the excipient, and water was used as a wetting agent. The effect of drying time, compression force, size of lactose particles, and moisture content of wet granules on tablet properties indicated that the formation and disintegration time of tablets were related to the effect of the formation of solid bridges between lactose particles.

In order to detect possible mutagenic substances in pyrolysate obtained by burning polyvinyl chloride product (PVC-P) at approximately 1000 degrees C, mutagenicity of rough extracts obtained by extraction with various solvents for the products was investigated by means of reversion mutation assay using Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 with or without microsomal metabolic activation (S9 mix). Strong mutagenicity in TA98 without S9 mix was observed in acetone-extract of PVC-P. The extract was fractionated into acidic, neutral and basic by liquid-liquid distribution and the mutagenicity in TA98 without S9 mix was found in the neutral fraction.

The aim of this study was to determine whether benzodiazepine tolerance might provide a predictive marker for persistent aggression in schizophrenia. Seventy-seven male schizophrenic patients newly admitted to our psychiatric intensive care unit due to violent behavior during a 4-month period were examined. As a result, a high dose of benzodiazepine required for sedation or a short duration until regaining consciousness after the initial sedation, was related to severer aggression on waking up after sedation.

Arrhythmogenic effects of phenothiazines appear to be associated with sudden death, whereas respiratory complications have received little attention. In this report we describe 5 cases with accompanying obstruction of the airways after intramuscular injections of levomepromazine (LPZ), a potent sedative phenothiazine, in combination with intravenous injections of benzodiazepine (BZ) during a 3-month period in a psychiatric intensive care unit. Two out of 5 cases were unpredictable because obstruction of the airways occurred 2 hours or more after the last injection.

Involvement of gamma-aminobutyric acid neurotransmission in phencyclidine-induced dopamine release in the medial prefrontal cortex.
