Recent development of an automated contour tracking (ACT) method using the energy minimization principle provides automated edge detection and tracking of the endocardial boundary of the left ventricle, without tracing a region of interest. This study determined whether left ventricular filling indexes obtained from the ACT method provide a reliable estimate of left ventricular diastolic filling. Fourteen patients were examined by the ACT method and equilibrium radionuclide ventriculography.

Using this device, we analyzed time courses of HR, running speed (RS), stride length (ST) and pitch of gait (PI) in response to various preset HR levels in 7 normal human subjects. When HR was preset at 80 bpm, HR increased rapidly in response to exercise and exceeded the preset level at 12.

Lactose with various particle sizes was used as the excipient, and water was used as a wetting agent. The effect of drying time, compression force, size of lactose particles, and moisture content of wet granules on tablet properties indicated that the formation and disintegration time of tablets were related to the effect of the formation of solid bridges between lactose particles.

In this study, the capabilities of MPEs (Ludipress and Microcelac) were compared with those of excipients in general use. Also, the effects on powder and tableting characteristics of the physical properties and contents of active ingredients were examined in tablets prepared with these MPEs by the direct compression method.

Higher sensitivities to sunlight were clearly observed in the mutant than wild-type strain, indicating that exposure to sunlight induces DNA damage which is repaired by DNA repair mechanisms. In order to assess the role of generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in DNA damage induced by exposure to natural sunlight, the kat-sod assay was performed using E.

Strong mutagenicity in TA98 without S9 mix was observed in acetone-extract of PVC-P. The extract was fractionated into acidic, neutral and basic by liquid-liquid distribution and the mutagenicity in TA98 without S9 mix was found in the neutral fraction.

Patient laboratory data were evaluated retrospectively prior to treatment. Of 259 male acute schizophrenic patients (ICD-10: F2 group), nearly 10% were dehydrated, 33% had hypokalemia and leukocytosis, and 66% showed elevated serum muscle enzymes.

The relationship between the decline of serum potassium concentration and the level of symptoms of acute agitation, which was defined as a total score on a subset of six categories on the 18-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (anxiety, tension, mannerism and posturing, hostility, uncooperativeness, psychomotor excitement), was examined in 313 schizophrenic men, admitted on an emergency basis during a 24-month period.

Seventy-seven male schizophrenic patients newly admitted to our psychiatric intensive care unit due to violent behavior during a 4-month period were examined. As a result, a high dose of benzodiazepine required for sedation or a short duration until regaining consciousness after the initial sedation, was related to severer aggression on waking up after sedation.

To make rapidly disintegrating tablets with sufficient mechanical integrity as well as a pleasant taste, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), Tablettose (TT), and crosslinked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Ac-di-sol) or erythritol (ET) were formulated. Tablets were made by a direct compression method (I). Tablet properties such as porosity, tensile strength, and disintegration time were determined.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFArrhythmogenic effects of phenothiazines appear to be associated with sudden death, whereas respiratory complications have received little attention. In this report we describe 5 cases with accompanying obstruction of the airways after intramuscular injections of levomepromazine (LPZ), a potent sedative phenothiazine, in combination with intravenous injections of benzodiazepine (BZ) during a 3-month period in a psychiatric intensive care unit. Two out of 5 cases were unpredictable because obstruction of the airways occurred 2 hours or more after the last injection.

Local perfusion via the dialysis probe into the medial prefrontal cortex with PCP (100 and 500 microM) and dizocilpine ((+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydroxy-5-H-dibenzo(a,d)cyclo-heptan-5,10-im ine; MK-801, 10 and 50 microM), a selective non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, was found to increase extracellular dopamine levels. Co-perfusion with NMDA (1 mM) or the GABAA receptor agonist muscimol (50 microM) attenuated the effects of PCP (500 microM) and MK-801 (50 microM) on extracellular dopamine levels.

The accuracy of this automated contour tracking (ACT) method in the evaluation of left ventricular ejection fraction was assessed in 20 patients (16 males and 4 females, mean age 58 years) using both the ACT method and equilibrium radionuclide angiography. Ejection fractions measured by the ACT method correlated well with those measured by equilibrium radionuclide angiography (y = 0.

In order to make a compressed tablet which can rapidly disintegrate in the oral cavity, microcrystalline cellulose and low-substituted hydroxypropylcellulose were used as disintegrants, and ethenzamide and ascorbic acid were chosen as poorly and easily water soluble model drugs, respectively. The mixture of microcrystalline cellulose and low-substituted hydroxypropylcellulose was compressed at 100--500 kgf in the absence of an active ingredient. The properties of these tablets, such as hardness, porosity, the time required for complete wetting of a tested tablet (wetting time), water uptake and disintegration time determined by a new disintegration apparatus, were investigated to elucidate the wetting and disintegration characteristics of these tablets, When the MCC/L-HPC ratio was in the range of 8:2 to 9:1, the shortest disintegration time was observed.

The dynamic process of compaction of long double-stranded DNA, T4DNA (166 kbp), was studied by the observation for individual DNA using fluorescence microscopy. We have observed the process of folding of metastable elongated DNA into compacted form in polyethylene glycol solution. During the thermal Brownian motion, the transition from the unfolded state into the compacted state is initiated by the formation of a nucleation center in the DNA chain.

We carried out a study to determine whether this age-related decline in cell migration was mediated by the autocrine cytokine interferon-beta (IFN-beta), which has been reported to suppress the proliferation, chemotaxis and collagen synthesis of human fibroblasts. Actually, IFN-beta specifically suppressed the migration of TIG-3S human fetal skin fibroblasts into a denuded area in a cell monolayer, as shown by the dose response experiments of IFN-beta and neutralizing anti-IFN-beta antibody.
