Introduction: The effects of Streptococcus salivarius on the competence-stimulating peptide (CSP)-dependent biofilm formation by Streptococcus mutans were investigated.
Methods: Biofilms were grown on 96-well microtiter plates coated with salivary components in tryptic soy broth without dextrose supplemented with 0.25% sucrose.
Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia is a benign nonneoplastic vascular lesion that consists of endothelial cells with abundant vascular tissue with papillary proliferation. An adult female had a painless growing dark red nodule on the left side of the lower lip and often touched and gnawed at it for more than 4 years. The lesion was a tender, smooth mass approximately 1 cm in diameter without discoloration reaction.

The two-component lantibiotic Smb is produced by Streptococcus mutans GS5. In the present study, we identified seven strains of S. mutans containing the smb gene cluster.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAims: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is subdivided into the restricting type (AN-R) and the binge-eating/purging type (AN-BP), but differences in cerebral blood flow between patients with these types of AN and healthy controls have not been investigated.
Methods: The present study was designed to elucidate any such differences using resting single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies to compare the differences in cerebral perfusion among both types of AN and a healthy control group. Resting regional cerebral blood flow was assessed using SPECT with technetium-99m hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime in 13 female AN-R patients, 13 female AN-BP patients, and 10 healthy women as controls with 3-D stereotactic surface projections.
Background: In previous reports, all pregnant women with VKH were successfully treated in the second or third trimester with high-dose systemic corticosterioids without any severe complications. We present a case of fetal death during systemic steroid treatment of a VKH disease patient.
Results: A 28-year-old woman in the 30th week of pregnancy was diagnosed with VKH disease.

OMP85 is a highly conserved outer membrane protein in all Gram-negative bacteria. We studied an uncharacterized OMP85 homolog of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a primary periodontal pathogen forming subgingival plaque biofilms. Using an outer-loop peptide antibody specific for the OMP85 of P.

We investigated the relationships between levels of the anti-PAc (361-386) peptide antibody (PPA) in saliva and periodontal status in 281 elderly subjects (mean age 77 years; 118 females, 163 males) by assessing dental calculus (CA), attachment loss (AL), pocket depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP) and various blood parameters.

Streptococcus mutans, the major pathogen responsible for dental caries in humans, is a biofilm-forming bacterium. In the present study, 17 different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns of genomic DNA were identified in S. mutans organisms isolated clinically from whole saliva.

Material And Methods: Twenty-one mature male Japanese white rabbits underwent unilateral mandibular osteotomy. After 5 days, the osteotomized mandibles were distracted 1mm/day for 10 days.
We examined concentration-dependent changes in cell cycle distribution and cell cycle-related proteins induced by butyric acid. Butyric acid enhanced or suppressed the proliferation of Jurkat human T lymphocytes depending on concentration. A low concentration of butyric acid induced a massive increase in the number of cells in S and G2/M phases, whereas a high concentration significantly increased the accumulation of cells in G2/M phase, suppressed the accumulation of cells in G0/G1 and S phases, and induced apoptosis that cell cycle-related protein expression in Jurkat cells treated with high levels of butyric acid caused a marked decrease in cyclin A, cyclin E, cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2), CDK4 and CDK6 protein levels in G0/G1 and S phases, with apoptosis induction, and a decrease in cyclin B, Cdc25c and p27KIP1 protein levels, as well as an increase in p21CIP1/WAF1 protein level, in the G2/M phase.

We investigated cellular and humoral immune responses to oral biofilm bacteria, including Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus sobrinus, and Streptococcus sanguinis, in NOD/SCID mice immunized with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (hu-PBMC-NOD/SCID mice) to explore the pathogenicity of each of those organisms in dental and oral inflammatory diseases. hu-PBMC-NOD/SCID mice were immunized by intraperitoneal injections with the whole cells of the streptococci once a week for 3 weeks. FACS analyses were used to determine the percentages of various hu-T cell types, as well as intracellular cytokine production of interleukin-4 and interferon-gamma.

However, little is known about the regulatory mechanism of epithelial 11beta-HSD2 expression in the gut.
Materials And Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were maintained on a sodium-depleted diet or subjected to continuous aldosterone infusion for 4 weeks.

It facilitates immobilisation of protein molecule on microchannel surface through Ni-complex, using crude or purified protein solutions. A dipeptide lantibiotic, named Smb, in Streptococcus mutans GS5 was characterized by molecular genetic approaches. The Smb biosynthesis gene locus is encoded by a 9.5-kb region of chromosomal DNA and consists of seven genes in the order smbM1, -T, -F, -M2, -G, -A, -B.

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether aldosterone induces prostasin mRNA in parallel with enhanced expression of ENaC in colonic epithelial cells.
Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were maintained on a sodium-depleted diet or subjected to continuous aldosterone infusion up to 4 weeks.

Although quantum teleportation is a naturally bipartite process, it can be extended to a multipartite protocol known as a quantum teleportation network. In such a network, entanglement is shared between three or more parties.

Competitive wetting of siloxane gel phase on a surface during phase formation is found to significantly affect the final morphology in a confined space. When the spinodal wavelength is sufficiently shorter than the size of the available space, a uniform bicontinuous structure forms in confined geometry.

We used 6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate (AQC) in the peptide labeling as a substrate for the trypsin-like peptidase in this study. The peptidase activity of trypsin was detected by using an AQC-chymotryptic peptide (AHP1) obtained from bovine hemoglobin.
