Molecular design of dual-fluorescent probes requires precise adjustment of the energy levels of two excited states and the energy barrier between them. While the hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) state has been recently focused as an important excited state for high emission efficiency with a tunable energy level, a dual emission involving the HLCT state has been only achieved with the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) system. Here, a series of dual-fluorescent molecules involving an HLCT excited state with the excited-state conjugation enhancement (ESCE) motif is presented as the first case.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, diagnostic markers, and treatment outcomes of varicella-zoster virus-associated anterior uveitis (VZV-AU) with and without ophthalmic herpes zoster (herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) and zoster sine herpete (ZSH), respectively).

Methods: Clinical records of 47 VZV-AU patients (21 ZSH, 26 hZO) were retrospectively reviewed for clinical findings, medication use, and PCR using aqueous humor (AH) results.

Results: There was no significant difference in age, gender, visual acuity (VA), or intraocular pressure (IOP) between the two groups.

During embryogenesis, human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) first emerge in the aorta-gonad-mesonephros (AGM) region via transformation of specialized hemogenic endothelial (HE) cells into premature HSC precursors. This process is termed endothelial-to-hematopoietic transition (EHT), in which the HE cells undergo drastic functional and morphological changes from flat, anchorage-dependent endothelial cells to free-floating round hematopoietic cells. Despite its essential role in human HSC development, molecular mechanisms underlying the EHT are largely unknown.

Flaviviridae is a family of positive-stranded RNA viruses, including human pathogens, such as Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), dengue virus (DENV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and West Nile virus (WNV). Nuclear localization of the viral core protein is conserved among Flaviviridae, and this feature may be targeted for developing broad-ranging anti-flavivirus drugs. Single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy is a powerful tool for investigating the physical properties of individual molecules, yet elucidating the fast fluctuation dynamics of freely diffusing single molecules in solution at room temperature, where a variety of chemical and biological processes occur, remains challenging. In this study, we report on fluorescence excitation correlation spectroscopy of room-temperature solutions, which enables the study of spontaneous fluctuation of the excitation spectrum with microsecond time resolution. By employing Fourier transform spectroscopy with broadband femtosecond pulses and time-correlated single-photon counting, we achieved fluorescence excitation spectroscopy of a room-temperature solution at the single-molecule level.

We have recently shown delayed increases in GABA receptor (GABAR) subunit protein levels in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG), but not in the pyramidal CA1 and CA3 regions, at 15-30 days after the systemic single administration of trimethyltin (TMT) in mice. An attempt was thus made to determine whether the delayed increases return to the control levels found in naive mice afterward. In the DG on hippocampal slices obtained at 90 days after the administration, however, marked increases were still seen in protein levels of both GABAR1 and GABAR2 subunits without significant changes in calbindin and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) levels on immunoblotting analysis.

Multicolor visible high-order Bessel (Bessel-vortex) beams which have a helical wavefront and a long confocal length have garnered significant interest for applications in materials processing and biomedical technologies. In this paper, we demonstrate the direct generation of multicolor (523, 605 and 637 nm) Bessel-vortex beams from a Pr-doped water-proof fluoro-aluminate glass (Pr: WPFG) fiber laser with an intracavity lens which induces chromatic and spherical aberration. The handedness of the generated Bessel-vortex beam is selectively controlled through lateral displacement of the intra-cavity lens.

NUP98 and NUP214 form chimeric fusion proteins that assemble into phase-separated nuclear bodies containing CRM1, a nuclear export receptor. However, these nuclear bodies' function in controlling gene expression remains elusive. Five undescribed norfriedelane triterpenoids, anchietins A-E, along with three known norfriedelane triterpenoids, 21β-hydroxycaloncobalactone, and welwitschiilactones B and C, were isolated from the vine of Anchietia pyrifolia. The compounds were characterized by spectroscopic and crystallographic methods, including 2D NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The isolated compounds were evaluated for the cytotoxic activity against HeLa and HL60 cells and for the inhibitory activity against lipopolysaccharide-induced NO production.
