Dissemination and participation in early warnings and disaster risk reduction in South Africa.

Unlabelled: Governments cannot effectively manage and handle disasters, particularly at the local community level, without actively engaging vulnerable people. The key to achieving sustainability in disaster recovery is community participation and information dissemination. The informal settlements' lack of access to information and public engagement hampered their ability to recovery, thus prompting this study.

Data on Investigating the resilience of female smallholder livestock farmers to agricultural drought in South Africa's Northern Cape Province.

The resilience to agricultural drought of female smallholder livestock farmers in the Northern Cape province of South Africa was examined using the Abbreviated Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index (A-WEAI). The A-WEAI consists of the 5DE index (five domains of empowerment) and the GPI (gender parity index). The total population interviewed was 154 participants (61 women in long-term relationships plus their male partners and 32 women who are single, divorced, or widowed).

Adaptation, coping strategies and resilience of agricultural drought in South Africa: implication for the sustainability of livestock sector.

Agricultural drought has put sub-Saharan African under significant pressure, and without adaptation, will negatively influence a future generation. Hence, it is crucial to assess the adaptation and coping strategies, the resilience of agricultural drought, its implication on the sustainability of the livestock sector, and developing future interventions. Data of 217 smallholder livestock farmers were used in a principal component analysis to estimate the agricultural drought resilience index as an outcome variable against social wellbeing, economic outcome, environmental variable and adaptive capacity variables.

The aim of this study was to determine the factors that influence the resilience of smallholder farming households in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. This study utilised primary data collected from 207 smallholder livestock farmers and the probit model. The study contributes to the existing literature by constructing an agricultural drought resilience index (ADRI) as an outcome variable in order to determine the factors that influence the resilience of smallholder farmers to agricultural drought.

This article assesses the socio-economic coping and adaptation mechanisms employed by sub-Saharan African migrant women in South Africa using a survey and multi-attribute contingent ratings. The socio-economic and adaptation mechanisms were identified using a sustainable livelihood framework, which included political and cultural capital. This study focused on the rarely investigated South-South migration flows.

Ecological vulnerability indicators to drought: Case of communal farmers in Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Estimation of ecological drought vulnerability indicators is the important step for drought mitigation management. This article identified and estimated ecological drought vulnerability indicators among communal farmers in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, using an ecological vulnerability index based on a household survey of 121 communal farmers. The results identified overgrazing, soil erosion, land degradation, surface and groundwater supply, and land use management as the main ecological vulnerability variables.
