Impact of tailored message notifications for frailty prevention in older adults: a quasi-randomized controlled study using a regression discontinuity design.

[Purpose] This study investigated the potential of tailored message notifications based on municipal health check-up results to improve pre-frailty and frailty in older adults. [Participants and Methods] This study was conducted in Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, by using the Kihon Checklist to assess the health status of older adults. Since 2019, Iiyama City has sent notifications to individuals with pre-frailty (Kihon Checklist score: 4-7) and frailty (Kihon Checklist score: ≥8).

Safety and Effectiveness of Exercise-Based Cardiac Rehabilitation for Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Following Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation Therapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Despite the potential of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) to reduce atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence after radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA), its prescription is not routine. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the safety and efficacy of CR in this setting. Inclusion criteria comprised randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing CR with usual care in patients with AF following RFCA.

Establishment of a novel model of endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer by transplanting uterine tissue from Arid1a/Pten knockout mice.

Although endometriosis is primarily benign, it has been identified as a risk factor for endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (EAOC). Genetic alterations in ARID1A, PTEN, and PIK3CA have been reported in EAOC; however, an appropriate EAOC animal model has yet to be established. Therefore, the present study aimed to create an EAOC mouse model by transplanting uterine pieces from donor mice, in which Arid1a and/or Pten was conditionally knocked out (KO) in Pax8-expressing endometrial cells by the administration of doxycycline (DOX), onto the ovarian surface or peritoneum of recipient mice.

Anti-tumor effect of Wasabi component, 6-(methylsulfinyl) hexyl isothiocyanate, against endometrial carcinoma cells.

Purpose: Wasabi is a traditional plant seasoning with an anti-septic function. Recent studies revealed several functions of Wasabi, such as anti-inflammation; however, the anti-tumor effect against endometrial carcinoma (EMC) cells has not been examined. In the present study, we investigated the anti-tumor effect of 6-(methylsulfinyl) hexyl isothiocyanate (6-MITC), a major chemical compound of Wasabi, against various EMC cell lines in vitro and in vivo.

Optimal target blood pressure in elderly with septic shock (OPTPRESS) trial: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Hemodynamic stabilization is a core component in the resuscitation of septic shock. However, the optimal target blood pressure remains debatable. Previous randomized controlled trials suggested that uniformly adopting a target mean arterial pressure (MAP) higher than 65 mmHg for all adult septic shock patients would not be beneficial; however, it has also been proposed that higher target MAP may be beneficial for elderly patients, especially those with arteriosclerosis.

Background: Desired longevity represents how strongly people esteem possible extensions of their own lifetime. The association between desired longevity and mortality risk has been reported in only one prospective study, which examined a small sample of older participants. We aimed to examine the hypothesis that desired longevity at middle-age predicted long-term survival.

Effect of age on dexmedetomidine treatment for ventilated patients with sepsis: a analysis of the DESIRE trial.

Aim: There are no definitive data to determine whether age influences the effects of dexmedetomidine (DEX) treatment. Thus, we investigated whether older age was associated with more favorable sedative action by DEX in sepsis patients who required mechanical ventilation.

Methods: This study involved a post-hoc analysis of data from the Dexmedetomidine for Sepsis in the ICU Randomized Evaluation (DESIRE) trial.

Convergent validity of a simplified device and relationship between blood lactate and salivary lactate after a vertical squat jump in healthy non-athletes.

[Purpose] The aims of this study were 1) to examine the convergent validity between Lactate pro 2 and a standard JCA-BM 8000 automatic analyzer using salivary lactate and 2) to investigate the relationship between blood and salivary lactate levels after a vertical squat jump. [Participants and Methods] Healthy non-athletes participated in this observational study. The participants performed a vertical squat jump for 1 min 30 s.

Successful High-dose Chemotherapy in Combination With Autologous Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation in an Anuric Child With Neuroblastoma.

No reports describe high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) with autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (auto-PBSCT) in pediatric patients with neuroblastoma and end-stage renal disease. Here, we report the case of a patient with high-risk neuroblastoma who developed anuria during treatment. HDCT with auto-PBSCT under hemodialysis, with strict attention to the ultrafiltration volume and dose modification of alkylating agents, was performed.

An Incremental Sit-to-Stand Exercise for Evaluating Physical Capacity in Older Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

Exercise is recommended for older patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and increased physical activity contributes to better management of their condition. The conventional exercise test with treadmill or cycle ergometer (CE) for assessing physical capacity, such as peak oxygen uptake (VO) and anaerobic threshold (AT), is not always usable for older patients with T2DM. The incremental sit-to-stand (ISTS) exercise is an incremental exercise test using external signals to control the sit-to-stand rate in a given time frame and can be performed in a small space using only a chair.

Longitudinal Change of DAT SPECT in Parkinson's Disease and Multiple System Atrophy.

Background: Both Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) are neurodegenerative disorder affecting striatonigral system. Although various lines of evidence demonstrate that dopaminergic neuron degeneration emerges before the onset of motor symptoms in PD, preclinical/prodromal progression of neurodegeneration is far less understood in MSA.

Objective: The aim of this study was to clarify the difference in the progression of dopaminergic degeneration in MSA and PD using dopamine transporter single-photon emission computed tomography (DAT SPECT).

Clinical and genetic characteristics of 14 patients from 13 Japanese families with -associated retinal disorder: report of eight novel variants.

Variants in the retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator (RPGR) gene are a major cause of X-linked inherited retinal disorder (IRD). We herein describe the clinical and genetic features of 14 patients from 13 Japanese families harboring variants in a nationwide cohort. Comprehensive ophthalmological examinations were performed to classify the patients into one of the phenotype subgroups: retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and cone rod dystrophy (CORD).

Cough Strength Is an Indicator of Aspiration Risk When Restarting Food Intake in Elderly Subjects With Community-Acquired Pneumonia.

Background: The incidence of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is relatively high in elderly subjects. Cough peak flow (CPF) is an objective indicator of cough strength, and CPF evaluation might be useful to assess whether food intake can be restarted. We aimed to examine whether cough strength assessed with CPF can be used as an indicator of the aspiration risk when restarting food intake in elderly subjects with CAP.

Validity and reproducibility of an incremental sit-to-stand exercise test in healthy middle-aged individuals.

[Purpose] We aimed to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of the incremental sit-to-stand exercise test for aerobic fitness evaluation in healthy middle-aged individuals. [Participants and Methods] Thirteen healthy middle-aged individuals randomly underwent the incremental sit-to-stand exercise and cycle ergometer tests, and the peak oxygen uptake was measured during both tests. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to assess the strength of the association between the peak oxygen uptake measured during the aforementioned tests.

Clinical and Histopathologic Characteristics of Melanocytic Lesions on the Volar Skin Without Typical Dermoscopic Patterns.

Importance: It is challenging to differentiate melanoma from melanocytic nevus on the volar skin in the absence of typical dermoscopic patterns.

Objective: To identify the frequency and clinical and dermoscopic characteristics of melanocytic lesions on the volar skin not displaying a parallel furrow pattern, lattice-like pattern, fibrillar pattern, or parallel ridge pattern on results of dermoscopy.

Design, Setting, And Participants: In this retrospective cohort study, a total of 504 melanocytic lesions on the volar skin were evaluated in the Shinshu University Hospital department of dermatology between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2012.

Image quantification technology of the heterochromatin and euchromatin region for differential diagnosis in the lobular endocervical glandular hyperplasia.

Background: Lobular endocervical glandular hyperplasia (LEGH) was first described by Nucci et al. in 1999 and is believed to be a precancerous lesion of minimal deviation adenocarcinoma and gastric-type adenocarcinoma in the uterine cervix. LEGH lesions do not always exhibit apparent cellular and structural atypia, so are difficult to distinguish from normal endocervical cells (EC cells) with cytological examination.

A case of thrombolytic therapy with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator for mechanical valve thrombosis at 9 weeks of pregnancy in a Japanese woman.

A 29-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to diagnosis of pregnancy at 5 weeks and a day. She underwent valve replacement with mechanical heart valve (MHV: SJM valve) for congenital mitral valve regurgitation, when 11 years old. Warfarin 4 mg was used for anticoagulation.

Infant Suffocation Incidents Related to Co-Sleeping or Breastfeeding in the Side-Lying Position in Japan.

Co-sleeping and breastfeeding in the side-lying position have recently been pointed out as risk factors for suffocation in sleeping infants; however, there is no actual report on an "incident." "Incident" is defined as a tense or sobering experience without a consequential fatal suffocation accident. It is important to understand infant suffocation incidents to prevent accidents during co-sleeping and breastfeeding in the side-lying position.

Electrochemical Imaging of Cell Activity in Hydrogels Embedded in Grid-shaped Polycaprolactone Scaffolds Using a Large-scale Integration-based Amperometric Device.

Here, we present a method for the electrochemical imaging of cell activity in hydrogels embedded in printed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds. Because a structure made of only hydrogel is fragile, PCL frameworks are used as a support material.
