Fetal development and growth of extensor tendons and their sheaths in the dorsal side of the wrist and hand: a histological study.

Background: To understand considerable variations in number of adult extensor ten-dons at the dorsal side of the wrist and hand.

Materials And Methods: We examined histological sections from 30 human fetuses of gestational age 7-39 weeks and crown-rump length 22-323 mm.

Results: At the carpal level, earlier or smaller fetuses showed a simpler configuration with fewer tendon slips, whereas later or larger fetuses had a greater number of tendon slips with considerable variations in number and topographical relationships.

Right and Left Coronary and Conus Arteries Originating from Three Separate Ostia in the Right Valsalva Sinus in a Japanese Cadaver: A Case Study with Literature Review.

A rare case of an anomalous location of the orifice of the coronary artery was found in a 99-year-old male cadaver undergoing routine dissection. The presence of the right coronary artery (RCA), left coronary artery (LCA), and conus artery (conus branch) originating from the right Valsalva sinus are the characteristic findings of this case. Then, the LCA passed through the aorta and the pulmonary artery.

Vascular endothelial cell-specific overexpression of CNP did not improve liver fibrosis in HFFCD-induced NASH, but did improve renal lesions.

Mice with endothelial-cell-specific overexpression of C-type natriuretic peptide (E-CNP Tg mice) were shown to be protected against hepatic fibrosis and inflammation induced by high fat diet (HFD) feeding, with improved insulin sensitivity and attenuated weight gain. A recently developed high-fat, high-fructose, high-cholesterol diet (HFFCD) is considered to be a superior model to HFD, owing to the resemblance to human non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). In this study, we therefore aimed to reveal whether these previous findings with E-CNP Tg mice on HFD can be observed in a newly developed NASH model.

Rare case of single left coronary artery in a Japanese cadaver.

A single left coronary artery with a single orifice in the left aortic sinus was observed during anatomical practice in an 81-year-old male Japanese cadaver. The single left coronary artery bifurcated into the anterior interventricular branch (IVa) and circumflex (CXa) branches. The IVa descended into the anterior interventricular sulcus to supply the apex of the heart, leaving a branch that traversed the upper part of the infundibulum to supply the anterior upper region of the right ventricle.

Thyroid function, glycemic control, and diabetic nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes over 24 months: prospective observational study.

Background: The higher prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in type 1 diabetes patients has been well established, whereas it is a matter of debate whether that is also observed in type 2 diabetes patients. This study was conducted to reveal whether higher prevalence of thyroid dysfunction is observed in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: We examined thyroid functions and thyroid autoantibodies in 200 patients with type 2 diabetes and 225 controls, with 24 months follow up for those with type 2 diabetes.

Structural and CBCT analysis of mandibular canal microvessels expressing neurotransmitters in human cadavers.

Purpose: This study focused on the detailed structure of microvessels of the neurotransmitter-positive vasa nervorum of the inferior alveolar nerve, vein, and artery in the mandibular canal (MC) to obtain information for improved safety in dental treatments. We also observed the detailed structure of the MC from the mental foramen to the mandibular foramen using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Methods: In this study, mandibles from 45 sides of 23 human cadavers aged 76-104 years were examined by microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and CBCT analysis.

Desacyl-ghrelin, not just an inactive form of ghrelin? A review of current knowledge on the biological actions of desacyl-ghrelin.

Desacyl-ghrelin is a form of ghrelin which lacks acyl-modification of the third serine residue of ghrelin. Originally, desacyl-ghrelin was considered to be just an inactive form of ghrelin. More recently, however, it has been suggested to have various biological activities, including control of food intake, growth hormone, glucose metabolism, and gastric movement, and is involved in cell survival.

Background: Learning and memory deficits and pathologic changes in the hippocampus caused by toothlessness and soft diet feeding are related to reduced masseter muscle (MM) function.

Objective: Myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoform expression in the MM also changes under different chewing conditions. The neurotransmitter calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) are involved in MM formation.

Developmental and mechanical roles of Reichert's membrane in mouse embryos.

Embryonic development and growth in placental mammals proceeds with the support of exchanges of gases, nutrients and waste products between maternal tissues and offspring. Murine embryos are surrounded by several extraembryonic membranes, parietal and visceral yolk sacs, and amnion in the uterus. Notably, the parietal yolk sac is the most outer membrane, consists of three layers, trophoblasts and parietal endoderm (PaE) cells, and is separated by a thick basal lamina termed Reichert's membrane (RM).

Improvement of imaging performance of silicon micropore X-ray optics by ultra long-term annealing.

We have been developing a light-weight X-ray telescope using micro electro mechanical systems technologies for future space missions. Micropores of 20 µm width are formed in a 4-inch Si wafer with deep reactive ion etching, and their sidewalls are used as X-ray reflection mirrors. The flatness of the sidewall is an important factor to determine the imaging performance, angular resolution.

Right Coronary Artery with an Intramural and Interarterial Course as a Unique Cause of Myocardial Ischemia: The Unroofing Method Might Still Be the Best Solution.

A 39-year-old man was admitted because of cardiac arrest. Emergent coronary angiography revealed a preserved coronary blood flow; however, multiple-row detector computed tomography (MDCT) revealed that the proximal right coronary artery (RCA) was running inside the aortic wall, creating proximal stenosis without atherosclerotic changes. Surgical intervention with unroofing was performed; however, postoperative stenosis of the proximal RCA required additional coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Intracellular ferritin heavy chain plays the key role in artesunate-induced ferroptosis in ovarian serous carcinoma cells.

Artesunate, an antimalarial drug, induces ferroptosis, but the mechanism is still unclear. In the present study, we investigated how Artesunate induces ferroptosis in ovarian serous carcinoma. Experiments were performed using the ovarian serous carcinoma cell lines CaOV3 and SKOV3ip1, and the sensitivity of CaOV3 to Artesunate was higher than that of SKOV3ip1.

A case of acute appendicitis incarcerated in obturator hernia.

An 85 year-old woman was transferred with a chief complaint of right thigh pain persisting for 5 days. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography clearly depicted a swollen appendix incarcerated in the right obturator cavity. She underwent an emergent laparoscopic appendectomy and the simultaneous repair of the obturator hernia.

Use of EMLA cream for skin anesthesia and epidural insertion in the patients with cesarean delivery: A prospective double-blind randomized clinical trial.

Background: Pain relief of epidural anesthesia in cesarean delivery is difficult. EMLA, a eutectic mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine, is effective for pain reduction during venipuncture and superficial surgery. However, its effectiveness during epidural insertion is not well elucidated.

BET proteins are essential for the specification and maintenance of the epiblast lineage in mouse preimplantation embryos.

Background: During mammalian preimplantation development, as the fertilized egg develops and differentiates, three cell lineages become specified: trophectoderm (TE), epiblast, and primitive endoderm (PrE). Through two steps of cell fate decisions, 16-cell blastomeres develop into TE and an inner cell mass (ICM), and thereafter, the latter differentiates into pluripotent epiblast and PrE. Although bromodomain and extra-terminal domain (BET) proteins, such as BRD4, are necessary for the transcriptional activation of genes involved in the maintenance of mouse embryonic stem cells by occupying their enhancers, their roles in the development of mouse preimplantation are unknown.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for morbid obesity improves gut microbiota balance, increases colonic mucosal-associated invariant T cells and decreases circulating regulatory T cells.

Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) for morbid obesity may improve gut microbiota balance and decrease chronic inflammation. This study examines the changes in gut microbiota and immune environment, including mucosal-associated invariant T cells (MAIT cells) and regulatory T cells (Treg cells) caused by LSG.

Methods: Ten morbidly obese patients underwent LSG at our institution between December 2018 and March 2020.

Successful case of direct puncture of a prosthetic bypass graft in endovascular treatment for long superficial artery chronic total occlusion: a case report.

Background: The access site for endovascular therapy (EVT) is often limited because of multi-vascular diseases. Prior lower limb bypass can potentially limit the availability of common femoral artery access when EVT is required.

Case Summary: An 88-year-old woman who presented with non-healing ulceration in the dorsalis pedis of the left foot despite treatment for several months was admitted to our hospital.

Associations between the psoas major muscle index and the presence and severity of coronary artery disease.

The associations between the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) and measurements of the psoas major muscle (PMM) as assessed by multidetector row coronary computed tomography angiography (MDCT) are not known.We enrolled 793 patients who were clinically suspected to have CAD or had at least one cardiac risk factor and had undergone MDCT. The number of significantly stenosed coronary vessels (VD) and measurements of the PMM index (PMMI) were determined using MDCT.

Regression and Stabilization of Coronary Vulnerable Plaque by Evolocumab as Assessed by Multidetector Row Computed Tomography.

A 65-year-old man was followed for his coronary conditions using 320-multi detector row computed tomography (MDCT) for 30 months. He had soft plaque in the right coronary artery (RCA) [mean density of plaque was 22 hounsfield units (HU)]. His initial serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was 72 mg/dL.

Mammalian embryogenesis proceeds in utero with the support of nutrients and gases from maternal tissues. However, the contribution of the mechanical environment provided by the uterus to embryogenesis remains unaddressed. Notably, how intrauterine pressures are produced, accurately adjusted, and exerted on embryos are completely unknown.

Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 2 and autoimmune hepatitis with thymoma-associated myasthenia gravis: case report.

Background: Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 2 (APS-2) is a rare and complex clinical entity, and little is known about its etiology and progression.

Case Presentation: A 52-year-old woman with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and bronchial asthma was diagnosed with APS-2; autoimmune Addison's disease (AD), and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), and she underwent prednisolone (PSL) treatment. Five months later, she presented ptosis and was diagnosed with thymoma-associated myasthenia gravis (MG).

Laparoscopic surgery for ventrally located epiphrenic diverticulum with esophageal achalasia.

Epiphrenic diverticulum is frequently associated with esophageal motility disorder, including esophageal achalasia. Heller's myotomy should accompany diverticulectomy to reduce the bulging pressure in surgery for epiphrenic diverticulum with esophageal achalasia. In such cases, designing myotomy is sometimes difficult, depending on the size and location of the diverticulum.

Predictive and sensitive biomarkers for thyroid dysfunctions during treatment with immune-checkpoint inhibitors.

Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are often seen during immune-checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment of various malignancies. Endocrine irAEs including thyroid dysfunctions are the most common irAEs, but their biomarkers remain unclear. In order to identify individuals who are susceptible to thyroid irAE for earlier diagnosis and appropriate follow-up, the current study is aimed to investigate biomarkers of thyroid irAE.
