Objective: Fish intake may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. However, the results of previous prospective cohort studies have been inconsistent, and almost all have been undertaken in Western countries, where total fish intake is low. We therefore investigated the association between fish intake and the risk of prostate cancer in a prospective cohort study in Japan.

We examined the effects of beta-adrenoceptor agonists on the membrane currents of smooth muscle cells from the human urinary bladder using a whole-cell patch clamp to investigate the involvement of Ca(2+)-activated K(+) (K(Ca)) channels in relaxation by beta-adrenergic agonists. With 0.05 mmol/l EGTA in the patch pipette, depolarizing pulses evoked outward rectifying currents.

Accurate localization of aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) is essential for the treatment of primary aldosteronism (PA). In order to confirm the clinical usefulness of adrenal venous sampling (AVS), we retrospectively studied 87 cases of PA in whom AVS was conducted. We collected right and left adrenal venous effluents simultaneously before and after adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation for measurements of aldosterone concentration (A) and cortisol concentration (C).

Background: In renal cell carcinoma (RCC), glycosphingolipids monosialosyl globopentaosylceramide (MSGb5) and GalNAc disialosyl lactotetraosylceramide (GaINAcDSLc4) were shown to be predictors of metastasis. Here we extended the research using a larger cohort of patients with a longer follow-up period, and reevaluate their relationship to malignant potential, metastasis and prognosis in patients with RCC.

Patients And Methods: MSGb5 and GalNAcDSLc4 were examined in 114 primary RCCs by immunohistochemical method on cryostat sections.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare, highly malignant tumor. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the prognostic relevance of a proliferation marker Ki67/MIB1 by immunohistochemistry in 17 cases who underwent resections of the primary tumors and diagnosed to have ACC at Tohoku University Hospital based on the criteria of Weiss during the period from 1976 to 2005. The follow-up periods ranged from 221 days to 10659 days (about 29 years) with the median of 1895 days.

To explore the brain response to sacral surface therapeutic electrical stimulation (SSTES) for the treatment of refractory urinary incontinence and frequent micturition, evoked magnetic fields were measured in six healthy males. Electrical stimuli were applied between bilateral surface electrodes over the second through fourth posterior sacral foramens with intensity just below the pain threshold. Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) for the bilateral median (MN) and posterior tibial nerves (PTN) were also measured for the comparison.

Objectives: To report our therapeutic results in prostate cancer using double-mutated adenovirus AxdAdB-3, which has a mutation of E1A and deletion of E1B 55KD. Advanced prostate cancer can harbor multiple genetic alterations, including p53 and Rb/E2F/p16, and is often refractory to hormonal ablation. Virotherapy has been used to target these genetic abnormalities using mutant oncolytic adenovirus for the management of other cancers.

N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase-V (GnT-V) is an enzyme that catalyzes beta1-6 branching of N-acetylglucosamine on asparagines (N)-linked oligosaccharides of cell proteins. We examined the implication of GnT-V and beta1-6 branching N-linked oligosaccharide expression in human testicular germ cells during malignant transformation and cancer progression. We analyzed immuhistochemically orchiectomy specimens of 130 patients with testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) using anti-GnT-V monoclonal antibody, and compared GnT-V expression with clinicopathological features.

Objective: To investigate the effects of the selective phosphodiesterase (PDE) type 4 inhibitor IC485 and the widely used antimuscarinic drug tolterodine tartrate on bladder activity in rats with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO), as inhibition of PDE4 leads to elevation of intracellular cAMP levels and relaxation of smooth muscle.

Materials And Methods: BOO was induced in female Sprague-Dawley rats by tying a silk ligature around the urethra. Six weeks after inducing BOO, conscious rats were assessed by cystometry with the urethral ligature intact.

Objectives: The incidence of inguinal hernia after radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) is high. We speculated that retraction of the vasa deferentia with a retractor might cause stretch injury of the myopectineal orifice and lead to inguinal hernia. In testing this hypothesis, we performed RRP with a modified technique and followed up patients prospectively.

Urotensin II (UII), first identified from goby urophysis, is a potent vasoactive peptide hormone and an endogenous ligand for an orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR14, now named urotensin II receptor (UT-R). In addition to its vascular actions, UII has been shown to have mitogenic effects on tumor growth and some regulatory effects on adrenal steroidogenesis. In the present study, we examined expression of UII and UT-R in human adrenal tumors and attached non-neoplastic adrenal tissues by immunohistochemistry.
