Article Synopsis
  • - About 30% of epilepsy patients experience refractory seizures due to a lack of response to anti-epileptic drugs, potentially linked to increased activity of drug-efflux transporters like P-glycoprotein and multidrug-resistance associated protein-1.
  • - A study examined the expression of these transporters in hippocampal tissues from 15 epilepsy surgery patients and compared them to tissues from 15 non-epileptic individuals, revealing a significant overexpression in the epilepsy cases.
  • - The findings suggest that these transporters may contribute to multi-drug resistance in epilepsy, indicating that targeting them could improve the effectiveness of anti-epileptic drugs by enhancing their availability in the brain.

Introduction: Granule cell dispersion (GCD) is pathognomonic of hippocampal sclerosis seen in the mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). Current animal studies indicate deficiency of Reelin is associated with abnormal granule cell migration leading to GCD. The present study aimed to evaluate complete Reelin signalling pathway to assess whether Reelin deficiency is related to MTLE.

Intracranial aneurysm (IA) has the potential to rupture. Despite scientific advances, we are still not in a position to screen patients for IA and identify those at risk of rupture. It is critical to comprehend the molecular basis of disease to facilitate the development of novel diagnostic strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • Paraquat is a highly toxic herbicide commonly used in agriculture in India, linked to frequent cases of fatal poisoning.
  • The main health risk from paraquat is severe lung damage, which often results in death due to the lack of effective antidotes, leading to a high mortality rate.
  • The text explores time-related lung tissue changes observed in autopsy victims of paraquat poisoning and discusses the potential use of anticoagulants and fibrinolytic agents as treatment options.

Aceclofenac is presently most commonly prescribed analgesic for chronic pain and inflammatory conditions. In clinical practice, phenytoin and aceclofenac are used in a chronic condition of generalized seizure with concomitant chronic pain. Hence there are chances of drug-drug interaction because modulations of isoenzymes involved in metabolism of phenytoin and aceclofenac are CYP2C9/10 and CYP2C19.

A strong relationship was established between the ratio of postmortem serum sodium and potassium concentrations and time since death by Querido in wistar rats. Henceforth, the present study was carried out to substantiate this inclination in humans. Flame photometric estimation of sodium and potassium concentration in postmortem blood of 474 subjects revealed a highly significant relationship between logarithm serum sodium as well as potassium concentration, logarithm of their ratio and the logarithim of the time since death during the first 3-58 h of death.
