Handicap theory explains that exaggeratedly developed sexual traits become handicaps but serve as honest signals of quality. Because very weak signals are less likely to provide benefits than to simply incur costs, it is interesting to elucidate how sexual traits are generated and developed during evolution. Many stalk-eyed fly species belonging to tribe Diopsini exhibit marked sexual dimorphism in their eye spans, and males with larger eye spans have larger bodies and reproductive capacities, which are more advantageous in terms of contests between males and acceptance for mating by females.

A 70-year-old man with insulinoma-associated antigen-2 autoantibodies developed diabetes mellitus (DM) without ketoacidosis after starting nivolumab to treat advanced gastric cancer. He subsequently exhibited preserved insulin-secretion capacity for over one year. A 76-year-old male received concurrent chemoradiotherapy, at a dose of 60 Gy with low-dose 5-fluorouracil, for cT1bN0M0 squamous cell carcinoma of the mid-thoracic esophagus. Because his primary tumor relapsed with mediastinal and right supraclavicular node metastasis 4 months after completion of chemoradiotherapy, right transthoracic esophagectomy with mediastinal and right cervical lymphadenectomy was performed. However, metastatic tumors developed deep beneath the anterior border of the trapezius muscle 2 months after esophagectomy.

A 75-year-old male received neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the mid-thoracic esophagus, followed by right transthoracic esophagectomy with extended mediastinal lymphadenectomy. HER2-targeted therapy is considered effective for KRAS codon 12/13 wild-type, HER2-positive metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). This article presents results from a multidisciplinary research project on the integration and transfer of language knowledge into robots as an empirical paradigm for the study of language development in both humans and humanoid robots. Within the framework of human linguistic and cognitive development, we focus on how three central types of learning interact and co-develop: individual learning about one's own embodiment and the environment, social learning (learning from others), and learning of linguistic capability. Our primary concern is how these capabilities can scaffold each other's development in a continuous feedback cycle as their interactions yield increasingly sophisticated competencies in the agent's capacity to interact with others and manipulate its world.

We focused on determining the most accurate and convenient genotyping methods and most appropriate single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) among four such polymorphisms associated with interleukin-28B (IL-28B) in order to design tailor-made therapy for patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients. First, five different methods (direct sequencing, high-resolution melting analysis [HRM], hybridization probe [HP], the InvaderPlus assay [Invader], and the TaqMan SNP genotyping assay [TaqMan]) were developed for genotyping four SNPs (rs11881222, rs8103142, rs8099917, and rs12979860) associated with IL-28B, and their accuracies were compared for 292 Japanese patients. Next, the four SNPs associated with IL-28B were genotyped by Invader for 416 additional Japanese patients, and the response to pegylated interferon/ribavirin (PEG-IFN/RBV) treatment was evaluated when the four SNPs were not in linkage disequilibrium (LD).

This report presents the case of a two-step laparoscopic resection and reconstruction for obstructive colitis accompanied by advanced sigmoid colon cancer. An 81-year-old woman was admitted with a diagnosis of ileus. Computed tomography revealed a circumferential tumor in the sigmoid colon and a diffuse dilated large intestine on the oral side of the tumor.

The high yield expression of BLT1, a G-protein coupled receptor for leukotriene B(4), was established in Pichia pastoris for structural studies. Guinea pig BLT1 was expressed in a functional form without post-translational modifications for the rapid purification and the crystallization. Among the BLT1s from four species, only guinea pig BLT1 was successfully expressed with the comparable binding affinity to BLT1 of native guinea pig tissues for several ligands.

This paper argues that by analysing language as a mechanism for growth of information (Cann et al. in The Dynamics of Language, Elsevier, Oxford, 2005; Kempson et al. in Dynamic Syntax, Blackwell, Oxford, 2001), not only does a unitary basis for ellipsis become possible, otherwise thought to be irredeemably heterogeneous, but also a whole range of sub-types of ellipsis, otherwise thought to be unique to dialogue, emerge as natural consequences of use of language in context.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a fatal muscle wasting disease that is characterized by a deficiency in the protein dystrophin. Previously, we reported that the expression of hematopoietic prostaglandin D synthase (HPGDS) appeared in necrotic muscle fibers from patients with either Duchenne muscular dystrophy or polymyositis. Prostaglandin (PG) D2 is produced in activated microglia by the action of hematopoietic PGD synthase (HPGDS) and plays important roles in neuroinflammation. Because the fact that neuroinflammation accelerates progression of Alzheimer disease (AD) has been documented, we investigated whether PGD2 is also involved in the pathology of AD. Prostaglandin (PG)E2 promotes the wakeful state when administered into the posterior hypothalamus, in which the histaminergic tuberomammillary nucleus (TMN) is located. To explore the neurotransmitter mechanisms responsible for PGE2-induced wakefulness in rats, we examined the effect of PGE2 on the activity of the histaminergic system and the involvement of PGE2 receptor subtypes in the response. PGE2 perfusion in the TMN at doses of 100, 200, and 400 pmol/min for 2 hr significantly increased histamine release from the medial preoptic area and frontal cortex in a dose-dependent manner, as measured by in vivo microdialysis.
