Vessel density within tumor tissues strongly correlates with tumor proliferation and serves as a critical marker for tumor grading. Recognition of vessel density by pathologists is subject to a strong inter-rater bias, thus limiting its prognostic value. There are many challenges in the task of object detection in pathological images, including complex image backgrounds, dense distribution of small targets, and insignificant differences between the features of the target to be detected and the image background.

Earlier age at menarche is a major risk factor for breast cancer. Our previous study identified Nrip1 (also known as Rip140) as a candidate gene for delaying female sexual maturation (FSM) and found that knocking out Nrip1 could significantly delay FSM in mice. Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one of the most common causes of cancer-related death. Our investigations show that miR-150 is a typical microRNA that is overexpressed in human NSCLC. We characterized the effects of miR-150 overexpression in NSCLC cells and found that down-regulation of miR-150 expression inhibited cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis in vitro; additionally, up-regulation of miR-150 levels had the opposite effect on tumor growth and progression.
