Impact of electronic AKI alert/care bundle on AKI inpatient outcomes: a retrospective single-center cohort study.

Background: Outcomes among acute kidney injury (AKI) patients are poor in United Kingdom (UK) hospitals, and electronic alerts and care bundles may improve them. We implemented such a system at West Suffolk Hospital (WSH) called the 'AKI order set'. We aimed to assess its impact on all-cause mortality, length of stay (LOS) and renal function among AKI patients, and its utilization.

Illuminating Firefly Diversity: Trends, Threats and Conservation Strategies.

Fireflies are a diverse group of bioluminescent beetles belonging to the family Lampyridae. Recent research on their diversity, evolution, behavior and conservation has greatly advanced our scientific understanding of these charismatic insects. In this review, we first summarize new discoveries about their taxonomic and ecological diversity, then focus on recent endeavors to identify and protect threatened fireflies around the world.

SARS-COV-2 vaccine responses in renal patient populations.

Background: Dialysis patients and immunosuppressed renal patients are at increased risk of COVID-19 and were excluded from vaccine trials. We conducted a prospective multicentre study to assess SARS-CoV-2 vaccine antibody responses in dialysis patients and renal transplant recipients, and patients receiving immunosuppression for autoimmune disease.

Methods: Patients were recruited from three UK centres (ethics:20/EM/0180) and compared to healthy controls (ethics:17/EE/0025).

Three new species of emLamprigera/em Motschulsky (Coleoptera, Lampyridae) from China, with notes on known species.

Lamprigera is found only in those countries from the Himalaya-Karakoran -Tibet region to SE Asia where 17 species have been previously recorded. These 17 include four species from China. In this work, combined molecular data (COI) and morphological traits identified eight species in our collections.

End-to-end face parsing via interlinked convolutional neural networks.

Face parsing is an important computer vision task that requires accurate pixel segmentation of facial parts (such as eyes, nose, mouth, etc.), providing a basis for further face analysis, modification, and other applications. Interlinked Convolutional Neural Networks (iCNN) was proved to be an effective two-stage model for face parsing.

Recent advances in treatment of haemodialysis.

Haemodialysis remains the most widely used treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease. Despite the progress that has occurred in the treatment of end-stage renal disease over the last six decades, there has been a failure to translate this into the desired clinical benefits, with morbidity and mortality rates among patients on haemodialysis remaining unacceptably high. Recently, however, there have been expectations that the significant advances that took place over the last few years may result in improved outcomes.

This is an educational case suitable for all readers, but aimed particularly at trainees preparing for MRCP. Using the example of a patient presenting to clinic with proteinuria, aspects of differential diagnosis, pathology and management are explored.

Value-based healthcare (VBHC) can be interpreted in many ways depending on one's jurisdiction. Often it is used synonymously with cost-effectiveness. In Alberta, VBHC might more appropriately be termed "values-based healthcare.

Exploring Mentorship as a Strategy to Build Capacity and Optimize the Embedded Scientist Workforce.

Background: Mentorship plays a significant role in career development in academic and applied settings, but little is documented about its role in the experiential learning of academic trainees embedded in health system organizations. The experiences of the first cohort of Canada's Health System Impact (HSI) Fellowship program can provide insights into how mentorship in this innovative type of training can work.

Objectives: To understand the mentorship strategies that were used and to explore fellows' and supervisors' perspectives and experiences on the effectiveness and value of those strategies.

Comparability of oscillometric to simultaneous auscultatory blood pressure measurement in children.

Objective: Uncertainty exists regarding the accuracy of automated blood pressure (BP) measurement in children. We recorded oscillometric waveforms in children, derived oscillometric BPs using two standard algorithms, and compared the results to simultaneous auscultation.

Despite increased interest in physician wellness, little is known about patients' views on the topic. We explore patients' perceptions of physician wellness and how it links to patient care. This exploratory, qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews with a convenience sample of 20 patients from outpatient care settings in a western Canadian city.

sp. n. (Coleoptera, Lampyridae): a new ototretine firefly from Hong Kong with descriptions of its bioluminescent behavior and ultraviolet-induced fluorescence in females.

The first species with associated males and female was found in Hong Kong and is described as new: Adults of both sexes were collected live in the field and their bioluminescent behavior is reported for the first time in the genus. The captive males emit weak and continuous light from a pair of light spots on abdominal ventrite 6 or do so when disturbed. The larviform (highly paedomorphic) females can glow brightly from a pair of light-emitting organs on the abdomen.

TiLIA: a software package for image analysis of firefly flash patterns.

As flash signaling patterns of fireflies are species specific, signal-pattern analysis is important for understanding this system of communication. Here, we present time-lapse image analysis (TiLIA), a free open-source software package for signal and flight pattern analyses of fireflies that uses video-recorded image data. TiLIA enables flight path tracing of individual fireflies and provides frame-by-frame coordinates and light intensity data.

Renal interstitial fibrosis in children treated with FK506 for nephrotic syndrome.

Background: Steroid-dependent, steroid-resistant or frequently relapsing nephrotic syndrome carries a poor prognosis, including progression to renal failure. There are a number of studies confirming the efficacy of FK506 in steroid-resistant or steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome. Although the use of this medication is becoming more common, we know very little about the potential nephrotoxicity when used in nephrotic syndrome.

Clinical practice guidelines for pediatric peritoneal dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) continues to be an important modality of treatment for children with end-stage renal disease. The Canadian Association of Pediatric Nephrologists recognized the need nationally to review the literature on the delivery of PD in children to provide optimal standardized care. This resulted in the development of the Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines for pediatric PD.

Stature in children with chronic kidney disease: analysis of NAPRTCS database.

Despite recent advances in the management of children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), growth remains suboptimal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors associated with short stature in children with CKD. We evaluated the chronic renal failure registry of the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Studies (NAPRTCS) to determine the relations among primary diagnosis, age, race, residual renal function, acidosis, anemia, serum phosphorous, calcium, parathyroid hormone (PTH), albumin, and height at entry into the registry in children with CKD.

Bacteremia due to Clostridium hathewayi in a patient with acute appendicitis.

Clostridium hathewayi is a newly described Clostridium species isolated from the feces of healthy human individuals, but its clinical significance is not known. We describe a case of human infection associated with C. hathewayi.

The safety and use of short-acting nifedipine in hospitalized hypertensive children.

Recent reports suggest that calcium channel blockers are harmful in the treatment of acute hypertension in adults. However, short-acting nifedipine is an effective and useful medication in pediatric hypertension and is currently utilized for hypertensive emergencies. This study will address these safety concerns in hypertensive children.
