Introduction: The inhaled anesthetic sevoflurane is an uncommon etiology of diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH). As DAH typically presents in the inpatient, postoperative setting, it has been infrequently reported in the anesthesiology literature and, to our knowledge, has not been reported in the emergency medicine literature to date.

Case Report: We describe the presentation of a young, healthy male in respiratory distress to a busy urban emergency department (ED) after an outpatient surgical procedure.

Cycling of organic carbon in the ocean has the potential to mitigate or exacerbate global climate change, but major questions remain about the environmental controls on organic carbon flux in the coastal zone. Here, we used a field experiment distributed across 28° of latitude, and the entire range of 2 dominant kelp species in the northern hemisphere, to measure decomposition rates of kelp detritus on the seafloor in relation to local environmental factors. Detritus decomposition in both species were strongly related to ocean temperature and initial carbon content, with higher rates of biomass loss at lower latitudes with warmer temperatures.

Introduction: Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence is an emerging technique in the surgical field. Among its various applications, it allows surgeons to have real-time visualization of the lymphatic drainage of an organ. The primary outcome of our study is the feasibility and safety of ICG-guided colorectal surgery.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused distress in students globally. The mental health of international students studying abroad has been neglected during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially Chinese students who have been unfairly targeted. To explore and document the positive and negative experiences of a group of Hong Kong Chinese international students studying in the U.

Plaque-like myofibroblastic tumour (PLMT) is a rare skin condition which presents in childhood and infancy as a nodular fibrous plaque. Including our case, there are currently only 14 cases reported in the literature. Although it represents a well-defined clinicopathological diagnosis, there is significant under-reporting of this condition secondary to under-recognition and potential misdiagnosis as dermatofibroma.

Fighting the COVID-19 pandemic requires large numbers of citizens to adopt disease-preventive practices. We contend that national identification can mobilize and motivate people to engage in preventive behaviors to protect the collective, which in return would heighten national identification further. To test these reciprocal links, we conducted studies in two countries with diverse national tactics toward curbing the pandemic: (1) a two-wave longitudinal survey in China (Study 1,  = 1200), where a national goal to fight COVID-19 was clearly set, and (2) a five-wave longitudinal survey in the United States (Study 2,  = 1001), where the national leader, President Trump, rejected the severity of COVID-19 in its early stage.

On December 30th 2019, some patients with pneumonia of unknown etiology were reported in the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED), a program run by the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), hypothesized to be related to subjects who had had contact with the seafood market in Wuhan, China. Chinese authorities instituted an emergency agency aimed at identifying the source of infection and potential biological pathogens. It was subsequently named by the World Committee on Virus Classification as 2019-nCoV (2019-novel coronavirus) or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

In January 2020, Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) resulted in a global pandemic, creating uncertainty toward the management of liver transplantation (LT) programs. Lombardy has been the most affected region in Italy: the current mortality rate of COVID-19 patients is 18.3% (10 022 deaths; April 10th) with hospitals in Lombardy having to expand the total number of ICU beds from 724 to 1381 to accommodate infected patients.

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) hepatitis in liver transplant patients is a rarely reported infective complication of HSV with severe consequences, often leading to fulminant hepatitis if left untreated. The clinical signs are often atypical, leading to under-reporting in the literature and potential delays in treatment. Our case report describes such atypical mucocutaneous lesions in a liver transplant recipient.

Background: Severe, recurring epistaxis is the most common symptom of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasias (HHT). Current treatment modalities range from noninvasive treatments that frequently fail to achieve even short-term control to surgeries and systemic therapies that carry significant risk of complications. Recently, bevacizumab, a VEGF inhibitor, has been proposed as an alternative option to alleviate epistaxis symptoms in HHT.

Background And Aim: Liver grafts from donors with chronic and active history of alcohol abuse are usually immediately ruled out for use in liver transplantation (LT). The aim of our study is to evaluate the use of those grafts.

Methods: From 2011 to 2016, a study group (Group 1) composed of 5 adult LT patients transplanted with livers from donors with alcohol abuse, was compared with a control group (Group 2) of 10 randomly matched patients who received liver transplants.

Background: Immigrants from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds diagnosed with cancer face multiple challenges with health systems foreign to them. There is scarce understanding about their needs following cancer treatment in the survivorship phase. Unmet needs were examined in immigrant Chinese and Greek cancer survivors in order to assist development of relevant and useful information resources for these CALD groups.

Aims: cardiopulmonary bypass and cardiac surgery are associated with a significant systemic inflammatory response that has been suggested playing a causative role in the development of perioperative atrial fibrillation (POAF). The goal of this meta-analysis was to determine the efficacy of glucocorticoid prophylaxis in preventing POAF, or length of intensive care unite (ICU) or hospital stay.

Methods: A systematic electronic database literature search of Cochrane controlled trials register (2013, issue 4) and MEDLINE (1966 to April, 2013) was conducted using specific search terms for all relevant articles.

Background And Aim: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the leading causes of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma worldwide. It is highly prevalent among injection drug users (IDUs) but is often undiagnosed because they represent an underprivileged group that faces multiple barriers to medical care. Here, we report the results of the New Life New Liver Project, which provides targeted HCV screening and education for ex-IDUs in the community.

Mitochondrial uncoupling protein-4 (UCP4) protects against Complex I deficiency as induced by 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP(+)), but how UCP4 affects mitochondrial function is unclear. Here we investigated how UCP4 affects mitochondrial bioenergetics in SH-SY5Y cells. Cells stably overexpressing UCP4 exhibited higher oxygen consumption (10.
