Background: We investigated the perioperative outcome and oncologic safety of performing nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) through a single axillary incision (NSM-SAI) compared with performing NSM through a conventional incision (NSM-C).

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 725 patients who underwent NSM for breast cancer between January 2010 and December 2023; 333 patients who underwent NSM with immediate reconstruction (IR) were enrolled. Surgical outcomes and oncologic outcomes of NSM-C (n = 184), NSM performed through SAI with a freehand approach (NSM-SAI-F; n = 92), and with an endoscopic approach (NSM-SAI-E; n = 57) were demonstrated.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common acute gastrointestinal disorder affecting approximately 20% of patients with systemic inflammatory responses that may cause pancreatic and peripancreatic fat necrosis. This condition often progresses to multiple organ failure, significantly increasing morbidity and mortality. Oxidative stress, characterized by an imbalance between the body's reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants, activates the inflammatory signaling pathways.

Background: Impaired mitochondrial protein import machinery leads to phenotypically heterogeneous diseases. Here, we report a recurrent homozygous missense variant in the gene that encodes the translocase of outer mitochondrial membrane 7 (TOMM7) in nine patients with microcephaly, short stature, facial dysmorphia, atrophic macular scarring, and moyamoya disease from seven unrelated families.

Methods: To prove the causality of the TOMM7 variant, mitochondrial morphology, proteomics, and respiration were investigated in CRISPR/Cas9-edited iPSCs-derived endothelial cells.

Objective: To identify related factors that affect the ovarian reserve after laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy in patients with endometriomas.

Study Design: It was a retrospective cohort study performed in a tertiary-care university hospital. A total of 409 patients with endometriomas underwent laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy between June 2014 and November 2021.

11-acryloylamino undecanoic acid (AAUA) is a versatile polymerizable surfactant that has been applied to coat medical devices, and these applications can benefit from a fundamental understanding of its interaction with a metal substrate. Cyclic voltammetry and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) were used to examine the adsorption configuration of AAUA molecules on an ordered Au(111) electrode and their mutual interactions, as AAUA was adsorbed from a methanol dosing solution. In addition to the van der Waals force between the aliphatic groups, the hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid and acrylamide groups was also important to guide the spatial arrangement of AAUA admolecules on the Au electrode.

Characterizing DNA methylation patterns is important for addressing key questions in evolutionary biology, geroscience, and medical genomics. While costs are decreasing, whole-genome DNA methylation profiling remains prohibitively expensive for most population-scale studies, creating a need for cost-effective, reduced representation approaches (i.e.

A programmed developmental switch to G / S endocycles results in tissue growth through an increase in cell size. Unscheduled, induced endocycling cells (iECs) promote wound healing but also contribute to cancer. Much remains unknown, however, about how these iECs affect tissue growth.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance to assess hospitalization rates, surgery trends, mortality, and reintervention rates for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) from 2007 to 2018, focusing on ruptured (r-AAA) and nonruptured (nr-AAA) cases.
  • Among 22,538 AAA patients, the yearly incidence was around 7.7 to 10.3 per 100,000, with a significant jump in endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) usage from 28% to 96%, while most surgeries occurred shortly after diagnosis.
  • While both EVAR and open surgical repair (OSR) decreased mortality rates for r-

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how glucagon secretion in type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients relates to their remaining beta cell functions, focusing on the differences between individuals with low and high C-peptide levels.
  • It involved 43 T1D adults and 24 healthy controls, measuring various hormone levels during a meal tolerance test to assess glucagon response over time.
  • Results indicated that T1D patients had altered glucagon levels compared to controls, with those having lower C-peptide showing a significant increase in glucagon response, which correlated with greater post-meal glucose levels.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a systemic disease. However, the relative contribution of intrahepatic and extrahepatic diseases to mediating HCV-induced mortality is unclear, albeit critical in resource allocation for reducing preventable deaths. To this end, this study comprehensively quantified the extent to which intrahepatic and extrahepatic diseases mediate HCV-induced mortality.

Background: Vaccination can be viewed as comprising the most important defensive barriers to protect susceptible groups from infection. However, vaccine hesitancy for COVID-19 is widespread worldwide.

Objective: We aimed to systematically review studies eliciting the COVID-19 vaccine preference using discrete choice experiments.

Cervical cancer is a significant public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where resources for prevention and treatment are limited. Routine screening, such as the Papanicolaou test (Pap smears) and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, plays a crucial role in the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. However, the participation rate in cervical cancer screening programs remains below optimal levels due to various factors.

-(1,3-Dimethyl butyl)-'-phenyl-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-Q) is a derivative of the widely used rubber tire antioxidant 6PPD, which was first found to be acutely toxic to coho salmon. Subsequent studies showed that 6PPD-Q had species-specific acute toxicity in fishes and potential hepatotoxicity in mice. In addition, 6PPD-Q has been reported in human urine, demonstrating the potential widespread exposure of humans to this chemical.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the deadliest chronic infectious diseases globally. Early diagnosis not only prevents the spread of TB but also ensures effective treatment. However, the absence of non-sputum-based diagnostic tests often leads to delayed TB diagnoses.

A Rh(III)-catalyzed annulation of 2-arylbenzimidazoles with α-diazo carbonyl compounds via C-H activation/carbene insertion/intramolecular cyclization is explored. The switchable product selectivity is achieved by the use of distinct α-diazo carbonyl compounds. Benzimidazole-fused quinolines are obtained through [4 + 2] annulation exclusively when 2-diazocyclohexane-1,3-diones are used, where they act as a C2 synthon.

The use of biobased flame-retardant (FR) agents for reducing the flammability of polyester/cotton (T/C) blend fabrics is highly desirable. In this study, a novel and sustainable phosphorus/nitrogen-containing FR, namely, phytic acid-urea (PA-UR) salt, was synthesized. The PA-UR salt was further used to enhance the FR performance of T/C fabric through surface modification.

With the rising need for accessible cervical cancer screening, self-sampling methods offer a promising alternative to traditional physician-led sampling. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the HygeiaTouch Self Sampling Kit for Women in detecting human papillomavirus (HPV) types and predicting cervical lesions. We studied the concordance in identifying high-risk HPV (hrHPV) types between samples collected by physicians and those self-collected by women using a self-sampling kit for validation.
