Ship emissions are a significant source of air pollution, and the primary policy to control is fuel oil quality improvement. However, the impact of this policy on particle size distribution and composition characteristics remains unclear. Measurements were conducted on nine different vessels (ocean-going vessels, coastal cargo ships, and inland cargo ships) to determine the impact of fuel upgrading ( < 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Ships, particularly inland vessels, are significant sources of intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs), impacting air quality and human health more than ocean-going ships due to their proximity to urban areas.
  • This study measured IVOC emission factors of three inland vessels, revealing a substantial range in emissions that varied significantly based on the vessel's age and operating conditions.
  • The research found that older vessels emit considerably higher IVOCs, and the emissions from inland vessels in Jiangsu Province were comparable to those from diesel vehicles, emphasizing the need for attention to their environmental effects.

Residential solid fuel combustion (RSFC) is a key cause of air pollution in China. In these serial studies, field measurements of RSFC from 166 rural households in eastern China were conducted to update the database of emission factors (EFs) and chemical profiles of gaseous and particulate organic pollutants, and the present study focuses on the intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOCs), which are precursors of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). The results show that the averaged EFs of IVOCs (EF) for crop straw, fuelwood, and coal are 550.

The emission factors (EFs) and source profiles of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in particulate matter (PM and PM) from the prebaked anode industry were studied to fill the knowledge gap and provide data for emission inventory and source resolution. In 2018, three prebaked anode plants were selected in Central China, each having one calcining chimney as well as one baking chimney, and then 92 samples were collected from the stack gas of the six chimneys. The results of the study are as follows.

Based on the annual average concentration values, the health effects and health benefits as well as 95% confidence intervals of PM and PM pollution control from 2014 to 2016 in Zhengzhou were evaluated by applying the Poisson regression relative risk model. Results showed that the health benefits of PM pollution control were 18.18 billion RMB (15.

The three typical carbon enterprises in Zhengzhou were selected as research targets, and the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their ozone formation potential (OFP) in different functional areas were studied. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) health risk assessment model was used to evaluate the health risks of VOCs emitted by the carbon industry. The results showed that the concentration of VOCs in the production areas of the three research enterprises was between 89.

To study the pollution characteristics of atmospheric heavy metal elements in a living area of Zhengzhou City, assess the potential ecological risks, and determine risks to resident health in this city, the Wuhan Tianhong TH-16A Airborne Particles Intelligent Sampler was used to collect atmospheric PM in Zhengzhou City. The mass concentrations of 17 metal elements were analyzed by ambient air determination of inorganic elements by ambient particle matter wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The source of heavy metals was analyzed by the enrichment factor method and principal component analysis.

Samples of particulate matter from flue gas emissions of typical brick, cement, and firebrick industrial kilns in Zhengzhou City were collected by dilution channel systems. Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Sr, Cd, Sb, Sn, Ba, and Pb were analyzed. The emission factors (EFs) and emissions of inorganic elements of PM from kilns flue gases of three industries in Zhengzhou City during 2016 were calculated.

Nitrogen (N) deposition levels and frequencies of extreme drought events are increasing globally. In efforts to improve understanding of plants' responses to associated stresses, we have investigated responses of mosses to drought under elevated nitrogen conditions. More specifically, we exposed subsp.

The influence of Cuscuta campestris on its host Mikania micrantha has been studied with respect to biomass accumulation, physiology and ecology. Molecular events of this parasitic plant-plant interaction are poorly understood, however. In this study, we identified novel genes from M.

Heat shock applied to germinated rice seeds increased the chilling tolerance of seedlings. Comparison with the control, brief heat shock applied before chilling at 4 degrees C for 2 days and recovery at 25 degrees C for another 2 days decreased the permeability of cellular membranes and increased the content of proline in rice seedlings. Heat shock applied before chilling also increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase and the content of ascorbate in rice seedlings.

Two cut surfaces of mango cotyledon (distal and proximal cut surfaces) showed different capability of adventitious root formation, only proximal cut surface could be induced to form the roots and the distal cut surface did not. cDNA fragments related to adventitious root formation from the cut sections were isolated with suppressive subtractive hybridization. The forward substracted cDNA library was constructed using the cDNAs of distal (non-rooting) cut surface as driver and the cDNAs of proximal (rooting) cut surface as tester.
