The osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) is key for bone formation, and its imbalance leads to osteoporosis. Forkhead Box Protein G1 (FOXG1) is associated with osteogenesis, however, the effect of FOXG1 on osteogenesis of BMSCs and ovariectomy (OVX)-induced bone loss is unknown. In our study, FOXG1 expression in BMSCs increases after osteogenic induction.

Flat-band periodic materials are characterized by a linear spectrum containing at least one band where the propagation constant remains nearly constant irrespective of the Bloch momentum across the Brillouin zone. These materials provide a unique platform for investigating phenomena related to light localization. Meantime, the interaction between flat-band physics and nonlinearity in continuous systems remains largely unexplored, particularly in continuous systems where the band flatness deviates slightly from zero, in contrast to simplified discrete systems with exactly flat bands.

Article Synopsis
  • The tumor microenvironment (TME), particularly cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), plays a crucial role in the development and prognosis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), with research utilizing single-cell sequencing to analyze this relationship.
  • Four key genes (CERCAM, KLF10, ECM1, HGF) linked to CAFs were identified and shown to correlate with patient survival rates, with high CAFs Score indicating poorer outcomes.
  • The study also revealed that CAFs Score correlates with immune infiltration, disease stage, and sensitivity to the chemotherapy drug Gemcitabine, suggesting these genes may influence treatment resistance in TNBC patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - Nasogastric tubes (NGTs) are often inserted blindly in ICUs, but misplacement can lead to serious complications like pneumothorax and gastrointestinal bleeding, as highlighted by a case involving a 78-year-old man.
  • - The case showed that traditional methods like auscultation (listening for a 'whooshing sound') for confirming NGT placement may be unreliable and are not recommended, with radiographic confirmation being the preferred method despite its limitations.
  • - Clinicians should focus on potential signs of NGT misalignment, such as unusual drainage fluid and changes in patient conditions (e.g., hypotension, anemia), and consider patient history of gastrointestinal issues during NGT insertion.

Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) are unique materials hosting topologically protected states, whose dimensionality is at least by 2 lower than that of the bulk. Topological states in such insulators may be strongly confined in their corners which leads to considerable enhancement of nonlinear processes involving such states. However, all nonlinear HOTIs demonstrated so far were built on periodic bulk lattice materials.

Double-strand breaks (DSBs) in DNA are challenging to repair. Cells employ at least three DSB-repair mechanisms, with a preference for non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) over homologous recombination (HR) and microhomology-mediated end joining (MMEJ). While most eukaryotic DNA is transcribed into RNA, providing complementary genetic information, much remains unknown about the direct impact of RNA on DSB-repair outcomes and its role in DSB-repair via end joining.

The type-II Dirac cone is a special feature of the band structure, whose Fermi level is represented by a pair of crossing lines. It has been demonstrated that such a structure is useful for investigating topological edge solitons and, more specifically, for mimicking the Klein tunneling. However, it is still not clear what the interplay between type-II Dirac cones and the non-Hermiticity mechanism will result in.
