Polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs) have emerged as significant environmental pollutants with potential health risks. This study investigates the cytotoxic effects of PET-MPs on BEAS-2B lung epithelial cells through integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. The results of the CCK8 assay showed a reduction in the viability of BEAS-2B cells following continuous exposure to PET-MPs.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a multi-system condition caused by the deletion of 25-27 coding genes on human chromosome 7. Irritability, gastrointestinal (GI) reflux and slow growth are commonly reported in infants with WS, but less data exist regarding GI concerns in older children and adults with the condition. This study evaluates 62 individuals with WS (31 children aged 3-17, and 31 adults aged 18-62) as well as 36 pediatric and adult controls to assess current and historical rates of common GI symptoms.

Acute pain, the most prominent complication of sickle cell disease (SCD), results from vaso-occlusion triggered by sickling of deoxygenated red blood cells (RBCs). Concentration of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) in RBCs promotes deoxygenation by preferentially binding to the low-affinity T conformation of HbS. 2,3-DPG is an intermediate substrate in the glycolytic pathway in which pyruvate kinase (gene PKLR, protein PKR) is a rate-limiting enzyme; variants in PKLR may affect PKR activity, 2,3-DPG levels in RBCs, RBC sickling, and acute pain episodes (APEs).

Background: Genome-wide association studies have identified multiple genomic loci associated with coronary artery disease, but most are common variants in non-coding regions that provide limited information on causal genes and etiology of the disease. To overcome the limited scope that common variants provide, we focused our investigation on low-frequency and rare sequence variations primarily residing in coding regions of the genome.

Supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS) is a narrowing of the aorta caused by elastin (ELN) haploinsufficiency. SVAS severity varies among patients with Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a rare disorder that removes one copy of ELN and 25-27 other genes. Twenty percent of children with WBS require one or more invasive and often risky procedures to correct the defect while 30% have no appreciable stenosis, despite sharing the same basic genetic lesion.
