Article Synopsis
  • - Phosphorus is essential for plant growth, but its deficiency in soil limits crop yields, with SPXs playing key roles in phosphate transport and absorption in oats.
  • - A genome-wide analysis of 169 SPXs from hexaploid oat and related species revealed that these genes arose from duplication events and are under strong purifying selection.
  • - The study found that SPXs are involved in responses not only to phosphorus deficiency, but also to various abiotic stresses, with specific genes showing significant resistance to low phosphorus, salt, and drought conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study utilized advanced analytical techniques like Lasso and Logistic regression, alongside machine learning and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR), to assess how different serum metals correlate with CKD and its indicators, such as creatinine and cystatin C.
  • * Results indicated that higher serum levels of potassium, sodium, and calcium were linked to increased CKD risk, while selenium and molybdenum showed the opposite association; cumulative exposures to specific metals, particularly potassium and selenium, were identified as potential significant risk factors for CK

The current study aimed to explore the role and underpinning molecular mechanisms of metformin in renal cellular injury induced by high glucose levels. Male C57BL/KsJ (db/db) and (db/m +) mice were utilized in this study. The experimental group was administered 1 mg/mL of metformin through drinking water.

Background: In hemodialysis (HD) patients, anemia is greatly improved due to regular weekly use of iron and erythropoietin (EPO), but a large number of patients still show persistent anemia. We do a survey to elucidate the influencing factors that contribute to the failure of hemoglobin (Hb) to meet the standard and provide epidemiological data reference for promoting the recognition of renal anemia and improving the treatment effect of renal anemia.

Methods: The clinical data of End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) HD patients in 22 tertiary hospital HD centers in Liaoning Province from September 2021 to June 2022 were collected by convenient sampling.

Developing cultivars with improved Pi use efficiency is essential for the sustainability of agriculture as well as the environment. Phosphate starvation response (PHR) regulators have not yet been systematically studied in wheat. This study provides the detailed characteristics of PHRs in hexaploid wheat as well as other major gramineous plants at the genome-wide level.

In December 2019, the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which has been identified to be caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged in China and spread across the world. Higher plasma levels of cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-2, IL-7, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-α, were found in patients with COVID-19, which implies the occurrence of a cytokine storm and its association with disease severity. Extracorporeal blood purification has been proven to effectively remove the released inflammatory cytokines.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how phosphate affects vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and aims to find new therapeutic targets to reduce vascular calcification (VC).
  • - Researchers focused on the role of O-linked N-acetylglucosamine transferase (OGT) in VC, using animal models with kidney issues to examine OGT's effect on VSMC autophagy and calcification.
  • - Results indicated that high levels of OGT lead to increased VSMC calcification by promoting degradation of a key protein (NRF2) through its interaction with another protein (KEAP1), thereby hindering autophagy in VSMCs.
