Article Synopsis
  • Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a severe inflammatory condition with no specific treatments, caused by abnormal activation of macrophages.
  • Researchers have developed a new targeted therapy called anti-CD41-PLT-VP16, which combines engineered platelets and a drug (VP16) that induces macrophage death, showing effective results in both lab and live models.
  • Early clinical trials indicate that this innovative therapy significantly improves patient outcomes, tripling the response rate compared to standard treatments for HLH.

Article Synopsis
  • Bone mineral density (BMD) is important for assessing fracture risk and diagnosing osteoporosis, with this study investigating links between dietary patterns and BMD in adults using NHANES data from 2013 to 2020.
  • The analysis revealed three main dietary patterns, highlighting that certain groups, particularly women and older adults, are at higher risk for low BMD, and those following "HM-Cho-Se" and "LP-HDF-Vit A-Mg" patterns had better BMD than those on the "LM-Vit D-Ca" pattern.
  • The study concludes that the "HM-Cho-Se" diet may lower the risk of low BMD, although it acknowledges limitations like its cross-sectional nature and

In this study, we investigate the unidirectional self-imaging phenomenon in the shifted photonic crystal (PC) heterostructure. A spin-locked topological edge state, which originates from the mismatch of the Wannier center positions, can propagate along the shifted PC interface without backscattering. When the neighboring shifted PC interfaces are close enough, the coupling between the edge states happens, and coupled edge states (CES) can be found.

Background: Multinational studies have reported that the implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to control severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission coincided with the decline of other respiratory viruses, such as influenza viruses and respiratory syncytial virus.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of common respiratory viruses during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Methods: Respiratory specimens of children with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) hospitalized at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021 were collected.

Soil heavy metal pollution, especially lead (Pb) and arsenic (As), is a global issue that requires urgent attention. In the present study, phosphate-modified ferric-based material (PFM) was used to remedy Pb and As co-contaminated soil. The remediation potential of PFM on Pb and As co-contaminated soil was studied by static culture experiments, and the effect on maize (Zea mays L.
