Milk fat globule epidermal growth factor 8 (MFG-E8) participates in a range of cellular processes, including reducing apoptosis and oxidative stress. However, its protective activity against cigarette smoke-induced ferroptosis in the pathogenesis of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the modulation of MFG-E8 remain unclear. Here, we showed that cigarette smoke diminished MFG-E8 protein levels but had no significant effect on its mRNA levels in lung tissues of humans and mice and in two human bronchial epithelial cell lines.

Extracellular vesicles are membranous lipid vesicles secreted by a variety of cells and widely present in body fluids, which contain proteins, mRNA, microRNA and other substances, and are an important medium of intercellular communication. At present, more and more evidence shows that mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles play an important role in the development of lung cancer.

Background: Hyper-immunoglobulin E (IgE) syndromes (HIES) are a group of primary immune deficiencies disorders (PID) characterized by elevated serum IgE, eczema, recurrent skin, or respiratory system infections and may also be accompanied by some connective tissues and skeletal abnormalities. Currently, there is no complete cure or targeted treatment for HIES. Omalizumab is a humanized recombinant monoclonal antibody against IgE, reducing the level of free IgE, inhibiting the binding of IgE to receptors on the surface of effector cells, and reducing the activation of inflammatory cells and the release of multiple inflammatory mediators.

  • Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is a new method for identifying pathogens in pneumonia, focusing on blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples.
  • A review of 467 mNGS results from 39 pneumonia patients showed that BALF mNGS has a higher sensitivity for detecting bacteria and fungi compared to blood mNGS (81.3% vs. 25.0%), while the specificity is similar for both methods.
  • Changes in treatment were observed in some patients without culture tests, indicating that while BALF mNGS is more effective for bacteria and fungi, blood mNGS is better for identifying certain viruses.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion events account for ~3-7% genetic alterations in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this study, we identified the ALK fusion patterns and a novel ALK fusion partner in 44 ALK positive NSCLC patients using a customized HapOncoCDx panel, and identified ALK fusion partners. The most common partner is EML4, forming the variant 1 (v1, E13:A20, 18/44), variant 2 (v2, E20:A20, 5/44), and variant 3 (v3, E6:A20, 13/44).
