Resuscitator bags are commonly utilized in acute care settings; however, poor performance occurs irrespective of a provider's qualifications or experience. A new flow-limiting device (Sotair by SafeBVM, Boston, Massachusetts) limits inspiratory flow during manual ventilation, thus minimizing peak inspiratory pressures. This study examined the differences in flow, pressure, and tidal volume (V) during ventilation with a manual resuscitator connected to the flow-limiting device versus a mechanical ventilator.

The photophysics of thiobases-nucleobases in which one or more oxygen atoms are replaced with sulfur atoms- vary greatly depending on the location of sulfonation. Not only are direct dynamics of a neutral thiobase impacted, but also the dynamics of excess electron accommodation. In this work, time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is used to measure binary anionic clusters of iodide and 4-thiouracil, I- · 4TU.

Superoxide dismutases (SODs) play important role in stress tolerance of plants. In this study, an MnSOD gene (TaMnSOD) from Tamarix androssowii, under the control of the CaMV35S promoter, was introduced into poplar (Populus davidiana x P. bolleana).

Estrogens are known to play a role in the feedback regulation of pituitary gonadotropin secretion in adults. However, it is still unknown whether estrogens are involved in promoting pituitary development. In this study, we selected chick embryo as the animal model and microinjected different doses of estradiol (E2) at stage E27-28, which was when endogenous E2 was not detected.

Background: Most published series of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are based on Caucasian populations. Very little is known about the characteristics of incompletely excised BCCs in Asians.

Objectives: This study examines the characteristics of BCCs in Asian residents in Singapore, and compares incompletely with completely excised tumors after conventional surgical excision.

Combination therapy between two immunomodulators used for treatment of chronic hepatitis B was explored based on reported therapeutic efficacy of interferon-alpha, and thymosin-alpha1 as monotherapeutic agents to determine if combination therapy was superior to interferon alone. This double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial compares the addition of thymosin-alpha1, 1.6 microg taken three times per week (combination therapy) or thymosin placebo (monotherapy) to lymphoblastoid interferon (Wellferon), 5 million international units (MIU) taken three times per week, for 24 weeks.
