Arrhythmogenic left ventricular cardiomyopathy is an increasingly recognized cause of recurrent myocarditis, a mimicker of acute coronary syndrome, and an important cause of malignant ventricular arrythmias and heart failure. Desmoplakin is a protein that is critical to maintaining the structural integrity of the myocardium. Disruption of desmoplakin leads to fibrofatty infiltration of the myocardium which leads to congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death.

COVID-19 infection has been linked to worsening or de novo lower urinary tract symptoms and transient serum prostate-specific antigen rise in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. This pilot study aimed to examine prostatic tissue for evidence for direct involvement with the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Aim: Paraquat, a quaternary nitrogen herbicide, is a highly toxic prooxidant resulting in multi-organ failure including the heart although the underlying mechanism still remains elusive. This study was designed to examine the role of the cellular fuel sensor AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in paraquat-induced cardiac contractile and mitochondrial injury.

Results: Wild-type and transgenic mice with overexpression of a mutant AMPK α2 subunit (kinase dead, KD), with reduced activity in both α1 and α2 subunits, were administered with paraquat (45 mg/kg) for 48 h.
