Septicaemia likely results in high case-fatality rates in the present multidrug-resistant (MDR) era. Amongst them are hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), two frequent fatal septicaemic entities amongst hospitalised patients. We reviewed the PubMed database to identify the common organisms implicated in HAP/VAP, to explore the respective risk factors, and to find the appropriate antibiotic choice.

Therefore, we designed a propensity score-matched, nationwide, population-based, cohort study for estimating the effects of thoracic RT on patients with EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinomas.
Patients And Methods: We analyzed patients with unresectable stage IIIB-IV EGFR mutant lung adenocarcinomas and categorized them into two groups according to treatment modality and compared their outcomes; groups 1 and 2 consisted of patients who received EGFR TKI treatment alone until tumor progression and those who received and responded to EGFR TKI treatment and subsequently received thoracic RT for lung tumors, respectively.
Background: Few large, prospective, randomized studies have investigated the effectiveness of esophagectomy in patients with thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (TESCC) who receive definitive radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) through modern, intensity modulated-RT (IMRT) techniques. The therapeutic effects of esophagectomy in patients with TESCC were evaluated using modern clinical staging and RT techniques and suitable RT doses.
Methods: The authors analyzed data from patients with TESCC from the Taiwan Cancer Registry database.
Background And Objective: Earlier exposure to laparoscopic techniques is thought to be beneficial for medical students. Reports have demonstrated that practice improves performance in laparoscopies. In this study, we intended to evaluate whether medical students' interest in surgery is affected by the amount of practice and the performance on a laparoscopic simulator.

In this study we compared perioperative outcomes and degrees of postoperative pain associated with single-incision subxiphoid thoracoscopic surgery, single-incision transthoracic thoracoscopic surgery and three-incision transthoracic thoracoscopic surgery for spontaneous pneumothorax.
Methods: During the period August 2013 to September 2015, fifty-seven consecutive patients with spontaneous pneumothorax were treated via single-incision subxiphoid thoracoscopic surgery, single-incision transthoracic thoracoscopic surgery or three-incision transthoracic thoracoscopic surgery.
Background: Multiinstitutional analysis of single-port video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for anatomic pulmonary resection is rare. This study aimed to address the technical feasibility and applicability of single-port video-assisted anatomical resection for primary lung cancer.
Methods: A total of 121 patients with primary lung cancer undergoing single-port video-assisted anatomical resection between 2011 and 2014 in 4 hospitals were included.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment modality of early central located non-small-cell lung cancer, and in patients who are unsuitable for surgical intervention. Most complications of PDT reported in the literature are minor and can be easily handled. We report a case presenting with nearly fatal complication: airway obstruction following bronchoscopic photodynamic therapy for early endobronchial lung cancer, requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
