Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is an ideal X-ray spectroscopy method to push the combination of energy and time resolutions to the Fourier transform ultimate limit, because it is unaffected by the core-hole lifetime energy broadening. Also, in pump-probe experiments the interaction time is made very short by the same core-hole lifetime. RIXS is very photon hungry so it takes great advantage from high-repetition-rate pulsed X-ray sources like the European XFEL.

Combining organohalide-respiring bacteria with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) represents a promising approach for remediating chloroethene-contaminated aquifers. However, limited information is available regarding their synergistic dechlorinating ability for chloroethenes when nZVI is sulfidated (S-nZVI) under the organic electron donor-limited conditions typically found in deep aquifers. Herein, we developed a combined system utilizing a mixed culture containing () and S-nZVI particles, which achieved sustainable dechlorination with repeated rounds of spiking with 110 μM perchloroethene (PCE).

IgA nephropathy (IgAN) represents the main cause of renal failure, while the precise pathogenetic mechanisms have not been fully determined. Herein, we conducted a cross-species single-cell survey on human IgAN and mouse and rat IgAN models to explore the pathogenic programs. Cross-species single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) revealed that the IgAN mesangial cells (MCs) expressed high levels of inflammatory signatures CXCL12, CCL2, CSF1, and IL-34 and specifically interacted with IgAN macrophages via the CXCL12/CXCR4, CSF1/IL-34/CSF1 receptor, and integrin subunit alpha X/integrin subunit alpha M/complement C3 (C3) axes.

Comprehension of metaphorical expressions differs with their degree of novelty. Conventional metaphors are typically comprehended as easily as literal sentences, while novel metaphors are responded to less quickly than their conventional counterparts. However, the influence of metaphor signals on the interpretability and acceptability of sentences with metaphors, especially their potential interaction with novelty, remains an open question.

Previous studies in affective computing often use a fixed emotional label to train an emotion classifier with electroencephalography (EEG) from individuals experiencing an affective stimulus. However, EEGs encode emotional dynamics that include varying intensities within a given emotional category. To investigate these variations in emotional intensity, we propose a framework that obtains momentary affective labels for fine-grained segments of EEGs with human feedback.

Fluorinated liquid crystal monomers (FLCMs) have been suggested as emerging contaminants, raising global concern due to their frequent occurrence, potential toxic effects, and endurance capacity in the environment. However, the environmental fate of the FLCMs remains unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated the aerobic microbial transformation mechanisms of an important FLCM, 4-[difluoro(3,4,5-trifluorophenoxy)methyl]-3, 5-difluoro-4'-propylbiphenyl (DTMDPB), using an enrichment culture termed as BG1.

  • The study investigates how fluctuating redox conditions impact the electron storage and transfer abilities of magnetite (FeO), which is used as a geo-battery and is often found with sulfide.
  • It finds that sulfidation of FeO enhances the production of dark hydroxyl radicals (⋅OH) when oxygen is present, with higher ⋅OH production correlating to specific conditions like the S/Fe ratio and sulfidation duration.
  • The research also suggests that during oxygenation, a two-electron transfer mechanism occurs, where surface-bound ⋅OH plays a crucial role in degrading dissolved organic matter (DOM) and influencing carbon cycling in subsurface environments.

  • High-harmonic generation (HHG) in liquids presents new possibilities for creating attosecond light pulses and studying dynamics in liquid environments.
  • The research examines HHG in various liquids, showing that as the pulse duration is tuned, exiting from discrete harmonics to continuous extreme-ultraviolet emission occurs, similar to gas-phase HHG.
  • Notably, the cut-off energy for HHG in liquids remains constant regardless of pulse duration, indicating it's a fundamental characteristic of the liquid itself, suggesting the feasibility of using few-cycle mid-infrared lasers for attosecond pulse generation from liquids.

Free-electron lasers provide bright, ultrashort, and monochromatic x-ray pulses, enabling novel spectroscopic measurements not only with femtosecond temporal resolution: The high fluence of their x-ray pulses can also easily enter the regime of the non-linear x-ray-matter interaction. Entering this regime necessitates a rigorous analysis and reliable prediction of the relevant non-linear processes for future experiment designs. Here, we show non-linear changes in the -edge absorption of metallic nickel thin films, measured with fluences up to 60 J/cm.

Yang-Lee edge singularities (YLES) are the edges of the partition function zeros of an interacting spin model in the space of complex control parameters. They play an important role in understanding non-Hermitian phase transitions in many-body physics, as well as characterizing the corresponding nonunitary criticality. Even though such partition function zeroes have been measured in dynamical experiments where time acts as the imaginary control field, experimentally demonstrating such YLES criticality with a physical imaginary field has remained elusive due to the difficulty of physically realizing non-Hermitian many-body models.

When non-magnetic impurity immerses in Fermi sea, a regular modulation of charge density around impurity will appear and such phenomena is called Friedel oscillation (FO). Although both Luttinger liquid and Landau Fermi liquid show such characteristic oscillation, FO in generic non-Fermi liquid (NFL) phase is still largely unknown. Here, we show that FO indeed exists in NFL state of an exactly solvable model, i.

Proton transfer is one of the most fundamental events in aqueous-phase chemistry and an emblematic case of coupled ultrafast electronic and structural dynamics. Disentangling electronic and nuclear dynamics on the femtosecond timescales remains a formidable challenge, especially in the liquid phase, the natural environment of biochemical processes. Here we exploit the unique features of table-top water-window X-ray absorption spectroscopy to reveal femtosecond proton-transfer dynamics in ionized urea dimers in aqueous solution.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) exhibits difficult penetration of most drugs, leading to a very poor therapeutic outcome with a quite low five-year survival rate. The foremost reason is the highly-dense extracellular matrix (ECM) with abundant collagen and fibronectin secreted by the activated pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs). Here, we constructed a sono-responsive polymeric perfluorohexane (PFH) nanodroplet to elicit a deep drug penetration in PDAC via the combination of exogenous ultrasonic (US) exposure and endogenous ECM modulation for potent sonodynamic therapy (SDT) of PDAC.
