Background: As a globally farmed oyster species, Magallana gigas has garnered significant attention due to the contaminated RNA viruses that have caused illness in humans. However, limited knowledge is available on the bioaccumulation status and overall diversity of RNA virome in the M. gigas digestive tissues (DTs).

Archaea play a significant role in natural ecosystems and the human body. Archaeal viruses exert a considerable influence on the structure and composition of archaeal communities and their associated ecological environments. The present study revealed the complete genomes of 38 archaeal head-tailed proviruses through comprehensive data mining.

Twenty complete genomes (29-63 kb) and 29 genomes with an estimated completeness of over 90 % (30-90 kb) were identified for novel dsDNA viruses in the Yangshan Harbor metavirome. These newly discovered viruses contribute to the expansion of viral taxonomy by introducing 46 potential new families. Except for one virus, all others belong to the class .

Article Synopsis
  • - A new virus from the Nitrosopumilaceae family, with a possible spindle shape, was found in the metavirome of Yangshan Harbour in the East China Sea through protein comparisons and structure analysis.
  • - Ten closely related viruses were also discovered in various locations where ammonia-oxidizing archaea are typically found, supporting their environmental relevance.
  • - The analysis of the major capsid protein and its features indicates that these newly identified archaeal viruses likely have a similar construction and morphology to previously known spindle-shaped viruses.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers identified and sequenced the whole genomes of seven uncultured dsDNA bacteriophages in Dishui Lake, the largest artificial lake in Shanghai.
  • The genomic analysis revealed viral auxiliary metabolic genes linked to protein synthesis and host metabolism, indicating a complex interaction with their bacterial hosts.
  • The study advances our understanding of bacteriophage diversity and composition in freshwater ecosystems, suggesting these phages share more genetic similarities with uncultivated environmental viruses than with established reference viruses.

RNA viruses in marine environments have long been recognized as major players in the virosphere. In this study, the complete genome sequence of an RNA virus from Yangshan Harbor, named marine RNA virus Yangshan-LWW (YS-LWW), was obtained based on metavirome assembly. The genome of YS-LWW is 8839 nt in length and contains two open reading frames (ORFs).
