is a genus of hazardous pathogens that has caused over 30 outbreaks. However, currently approved therapies are limited in scope, as they are only effective against the Ebola virus and lack cross-protection against other orthoebolaviruses. Here, we demonstrate that a previously isolated human-derived antibody, 2G1, can recognize the glycoprotein (GP) of every orthoebolavirus species.

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO) is regarded as a promising photoanode candidate for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but is limited by low efficiency of charge carrier transport and short carrier diffusion length. In this work, we report a strategy comprised of the gradient doping of W and back-to-back stacking of transparent photoelectrodes, where the 3-2 wt.% W gradient doping enhances charge carrier transport by optimizing the band bending degree and back-to-back stack configuration shortens carrier diffusion length without much sacrifice of photons.

The application of nanoscale scaffolds has become a promising strategy in vaccine design, with protein-based nanoparticles offering desirable avenues for the biocompatible and efficient delivery of antigens. Here, we presented a novel endogenous capsid-forming protein, activated-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein (ARC), which could be engineered through the plug-and-play strategy (SpyCatcher3/SpyTag3) for multivalent display of antigens. Combined with the self-assembly capacity and flexible modularity of ARC, ARC-based vaccines elicited robust immune responses against Mpox or SARS-CoV-2, comparable to those induced by ferritin-based vaccines.

2D conjugated covalent organic frameworks (c-COFs) provide an attractive foundation as organic electrodes in energy storage devices, but their storage capability is long hindered by limited ion accessibility within densely π-π stacked interlayers. Herein, two kinds of 2D c-COFs based on dioxin and dithiine linkages are reported, which exhibit distinct in-plane configurations-fully planar and undulated layers. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals wavy square-planar networks in dithiine-bridged COF (COF-S), attributed to curved C─S─C bonds in the dithiine linkage, whereas dioxin-bridged COF (COF-O) features densely packed fully planar layers.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found that a part of the COVID-19 virus called SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can make healthy cells stick together and act like sick cells in people with long COVID.
  • This can worsen heart problems because these clumped cells change the way the heart functions.
  • The good news is that some drugs might help protect the heart from getting worse in people who have these issues after getting COVID-19.

The activation of multiple Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs) has been demonstrated to trigger inflammatory responses and coordinate the host's adaptive immunity during pathogen infections. The use of PRR agonists as vaccine adjuvants has been reported to synergistically induce specific humoral and cellular immune responses. However, incorporating multiple PRR agonists as adjuvants increases the complexity of vaccine design and manufacturing.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases with associated clinical decision-making typically based on single-valued imaging biomarkers. However, such metrics only approximate the complex 3D structure and physiology of the heart and hence hinder a better understanding and prediction of MI outcomes. In this work, we investigate the utility of complete 3D cardiac shapes in the form of point clouds for an improved detection of MI events.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is listed as a priority pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) because it causes serious and fatal disease in humans, and there are currently no effective countermeasures. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a safe and efficacious vaccine. Here, we developed six nucleotide-modified mRNA vaccines encoding different regions of the Gn and Gc proteins of RVFV encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles, compared their ability to induce immune responses in mice and found that mRNA vaccine encoding the full-length Gn and Gc proteins had the strongest ability to induce cellular and humoral immune responses.

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant has become the dominant SARS-CoV-2 variant and exhibits immune escape to current COVID-19 vaccines, the further boosting strategies are required.

Methods: We have conducted a non-randomized, open-label and parallel-controlled phase 4 trial to evaluate the magnitude and longevity of immune responses to booster vaccination with intramuscular adenovirus vectored vaccine (Ad5-nCoV), aerosolized Ad5-nCoV, a recombinant protein subunit vaccine (ZF2001) or homologous inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac) in those who received two doses of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines.

Results: The aerosolized Ad5-nCoV induced the most robust and long-lasting neutralizing activity against Omicron variant and IFNg T-cell response among all the boosters, with a distinct mucosal immune response.

Aluminum (alum) adjuvant is the most extensively used protein subunit vaccine adjuvant, and its effectiveness and safety have been widely recognized. The surface charge of the antigen determines its electrostatic adsorption to alum adjuvant, which directly affects the immune efficacy of the protein vaccine. In our study, we precisely modified its surface charge by inserting charged amino acids into the flexible region of the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (RBD), achieving electrostatic adsorption and a site-specific anchor between the immunogen and alum adjuvant.

Previous studies have already suggested that the deliberate nature of Mind-Wandering (MW) is critical for promoting creative performance. However, the deliberate nature of MW may be mixed up with task-relatedness. Whether the deliberate nature or task-relatedness of MW is responsible for such positive influence remains unclear.

Recombinant adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5) vector has been widely applied in vaccine development targeting infectious diseases, such as Ebola virus disease and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the high prevalence of preexisting anti-vector immunity compromises the immunogenicity of Ad5-based vaccines. Thus, there is a substantial unmet need to minimize preexisting immunity while improving the insert-induced immunity of Ad5 vectors.

Water oxidation reaction leaves room to be improved in the development of various solar fuel productions, because of the kinetically sluggish 4-electron transfer process of oxygen evolution reaction. In this work, we realize reactive oxygen species (ROS), H O and OH⋅, formations by water oxidation with total Faraday efficiencies of more than 90 % by using inter-facet edge (IFE) rich WO arrays in an electrolyte containing CO . Our results demonstrate that the IFE favors the adsorption of CO while reducing the adsorption energy of OH⋅, as well as suppresses surface hole accumulation by direct 1-electron and indirect 2-electron transfer pathways.

Millions of families around the world remain vulnerable to water scarcity and have no access to drinking water. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are an effective way towards water purification with qualified reactive oxygen species (ROSs) while are impeded by the high-cost and tedious process in either input of consumable reagent, production of ROSs, and the pre-treatment of supporting electrolyte. Herein, we couple solar light-assisted HO production from water and photo-Fenton-like reactions into a self-cyclable system by using an artificial leaf, achieving an unassisted HO production rate of 0.

The spent adsorbent loaded by toxic metals is a solid hazardous waste which could cause significant secondary pollution due to potential possible additional release of metal ions. Therefore, the main subject is direct reutilization of spent adsorbents which can further economically and realistically offer new features, like recycling metal adsorbed, or formation of functional SiO-based nanocomposites. The nanoporous structure and negative surface charges enable steel slag-derived amorphous calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) to retain effectively the incoming metal ions (e.
