Anti-cancer activity of a novel palladium(II) complex on human breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.

Anti-cancer effects of a newly-synthesized palladium(II) complex, [Pd(sac)(terpy)](sac)·4H(2)O (sac = saccharinate, and terpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine), were tested against human breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. The Pd complex had a strong anti-growth effect in a dose- and time-dependent manner in vitro. This effect was also confirmed by the experiment performed on Balb/c mice in vivo.

Cell death-inducing effect of novel palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes on non-small cell lung cancer cells in vitro.

New palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes of saccharinate (sac) with 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole (pybim) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques. From the experimental studies, these complexes were formulated as [Pd(pybim)(sac)2] (1), and [Pt(pybim)(sac)2]·4H2O (2). The ground-state geometries of both complexes were optimized using density functional theory (DFT) methods at the B3LYP level.

Chyluria and delayed graft function in early posttransplant period in a renal transplant patient.

Chyluria mostly occurs because of the leakage of lymphatic fluid into the urinary system from the lymphatic system. The patient reported here with end-stage renal disease caused by the nephrotic syndrome underwent renal transplantation from a living donor. During the early posttransplant period, her daily urine output was 300 to 400 mL, and it was chylous.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura associated with everolimus use in a renal transplant patient.

Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) in renal transplantation (RTX) generally develops during treatment with calcineurin inhibitors. We present a RTX case that developed TMA under everolimus treatment. A 40-year-old woman received a kidney allograft from her 77-year-old mother.

The safety of hem-o-lock clips at donor nephrectomies.

Background: Hem-o-lock (polymer) vascular clips have been used over a long period for vascular control at donor nephrectomies. With our study, safety of hem-o-lock clip use at donor nephrectomies (conventional donor nephrectomy, transabdominal donor nephrectomy and retroperitonoscopic donor nephrectomy) has been evaluated.

Material/method: A total of 883 cases, consisting of conventional donor nephrectomy, transabdominal donor nephrectomy and retroperitonoscopic donor nephrectomy, performed between May 2006 and August 2009 were retrospectively evaluated.

Molecular characterization of Bovine virus diarrhea viruses species 2 (BVDV-2) from cattle in Turkey.

Five BVDV species 2 (BVDV-2) isolates were detected from cattle in Turkey. Phylogenetic analysis was performed based on the 5' untranslated regions (UTRs) and E2 coding gene regions, respectively. The isolates were closely related to BVDV-2a strains from North America and Canada used as references.

Sonochemical synthesis of nano-scale mixed-ligands lead(II) coordination polymers as precursors for preparation of PbO and PbBr(OH) nano-structures; thermal, structural and X-ray powder diffraction studies.

Nano-structures of two new lead(II) two-dimensional coordination polymers, [Pb(2)(2-pyc)(2)(I)(2)](n) (1) and [Pb(2)(2-pyc)(2)(Br)(2)](n) (2), {2-Hpyc=2-pyridinecarboxilic acid } were synthesized by a sonochemical method that produce the coordination polymers at nano-size. The new nano-structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, IR spectroscopy and elemental analyses. Compounds 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and consist of two-dimensional polymeric units.

Aspiration of massive amounts may lead to an acute and fatal form of exogenous lipoid pneumonia (fire-eater's pneumonia). We present a rare case of chemical pneumonitis following accidental lamp oil aspiration characterized by pneumatocele formation and spontaneous resolution.

Primary pulmonary teratoma: Report of a case and the proposition of "bronchotrichosis" as a new term.

Primary pulmonary teratoma is a very rare disease. Most follow a benign course and are incidental findings during routine chest X-rays. Hair found in sputum or in bronchus detected during bronchoscopy is also a rare condition and is usually caused by mediastinal teratoma.

Long remission in muscle-specific kinase antibody-positive juvenile myasthenia.

The clinical course of anti-muscle specific kinase-positive myasthenia in children has been little reported. Described here is the case of an 8 year-old boy who presented with ptosis and generalized weakness, which resolved within 1 month without any immunomodulatory treatment. This spontaneous remission lasted 6 years and was then followed by a relapse with bulbar symptoms.

Synthesis of a novel chelating resin and its use for selective separation and preconcentration of some trace metals in water samples.

A new chelating resin, poly[N-(4-bromophenyl)-2-methacrylamide-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid-co-divinylbenzene], was synthesized and characterized. The resin was used for selective separation, preconcentration and determination of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) ions in water samples by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Effects of pH, concentration and volume of elution solution, sample flow rate, sample volume and interfering ions (Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+), Fe(3+), Mn(2+), Al(3+), Zn(2+), Pb(2+), Cu(2+), Ni(2+), Cd(2+), Cl(-) and SO(4)(2-)) on the recovery of the analytes were investigated.

The method is based on the adsorption and chelation of the metal ions on a column containing Amberlite XAD-1180 resin impregnated with 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol (TAN) reagent prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The role of HLA-DRB1 shared epitope alleles in predicting short-term response to leflunomide in rheumatoid arthritis.

Objectives: To investigate the role of shared epitope (SE) alleles in the short-term clinical response to leflunomide for the treatment of active RA.

Methods: In an open-label, multi-centre study of 16-weeks duration, 93 patients (82% female) fulfilling ARA 1987 RA criteria were treated with leflunomide (100 mg loading dose for 3 days, then 20 mg/day as the maintenance dose). The primary efficacy criterion was the response status according to the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) response criteria using Disease Activity Score-28 (DAS28) activity measure.

Application of multivariate statistical techniques in the assessment of surface water quality in Uluabat Lake, Turkey.

The application of different multivariate statistical approaches for the interpretation of a complex data matrix obtained during the period 2004-2005 from Uluabat Lake surface water is presented in this study. The dataset consists of the analytical results of a 1 year-survey conducted in 12 sampling stations in the Lake. Clinical comparison of anti-MuSK- vs anti-AChR-positive and seronegative myasthenia gravis.

We compared 65 anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR)-negative myasthenia gravis (MG) patients, including 32 anti-muscle-specific tyrosine kinase (MuSK)-positive (49%) and 33 anti-MuSK-negative (seronegative) (51%) patients, with 161 anti-AChR-positive MG patients. The anti-MuSK-positive group had a higher frequency of bulbar involvement and respiratory crises. The seronegative group was in between the anti-MuSK positive and the anti-AChR positive groups, being closer to the latter, with regard to the severity of the disease.
