Cystic schwannoma of the axillary region: imaging findings of a rare disease. Case report.

Schwannomas are well capsulated, benign, and slowly growing tumors which originate from Schwann cells of peripheral nerve sheath. The incidence of schwannomanas in the axillary region is not common. This rarity causes misdiagnosis at the radiological evaluation.

Prevalence of celiac disease in Turkish children with idiopathic epilepsy.

Objective: This study has examined the prevalence of celiac disease in Turkish children with idiopathic epilepsy.

Methods: Children with idiopathic epilepsy were screened for celiac disease using the IgA anti-tissue transglutaminase antibody and compared with the healthy control group in order to find the association of celiac disease (CD) with idiopathic epilepsy. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and small intestinal biopsies were offered to all antibody-positive patients.

The effect of repeated firings on the color change of dental ceramics using different glazing methods.

Purpose: Surface color is one of the main criteria to obtain an ideal esthetic. Many factors such as the type of the material, surface specifications, number of firings, firing temperature and thickness of the porcelain are all important to provide an unchanged surface color in dental ceramics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the color changes in dental ceramics according to the material type and glazing methods, during the multiple firings.

The role of elastosonography, gray-scale and colour flow Doppler sonography in prediction of malignancy in thyroid nodules.

Background: Ultrasound is as a noninvasive method commonly used in the work-up of thyroid nodules. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of sonographic and elastosonographic parameters in the discrimination of malignancy.

Patients And Methods: 150 thyroid nodules were evaluated by gray-scale, Doppler and elastosonography.

The effect of repeated firings on the color change and surface roughness of dental ceramics.

Purpose: The color of the ceramic restorations is affected by various factors such as brand, thickness of the layered the ceramic, condensation techniques, smoothness of surface, number of firings, firing temperature and thickness of dentin. The aim of this study was to evaluate the color change and surface roughness in dental porcelain with different thicknesses during repeated firings.

Materials And Methods: Disc-shaped (N=21) metal-ceramic samples (IPS Classic; Ivoclar Vivadent; Shaar, Liechtenstein) with different thickness were exposed to repeated firings.

Evaluation of various active surveillance protocols in prostate cancer.

Objective: This study aims to investigate whether pathology results obtained by radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) were correlated with active surveillance (AS) criteria defined by Klotz, Soloway and D'Amico.

Materials And Methods: In our clinic we evaluated 211 patients with diagnosis of localized prostate cancer who underwent RRP between 2007 and 2012. AS criteria defined by Soloway (cT ≤ T2, PSA ≤ 15 ng/dl, Gleason ≤ 6), Klotz (cT1c-T2a; if age ≥ 70 PSA ≤ 15 ng/dl, if age < 70 PSA ≤ 10 ng/dl; if age ≥ 70 Gleason ≤ 7(3+4), if age < 70 Gleason ≤ 6) and D'Amico (cT1c-T2a, PSA ≤ 10 ng/dl, Gleason ≤ 6) were used in our study.

The effects of a low international normalized ratio on thromboembolic and bleeding complications in patients with mechanical mitral valve replacement.

Background: Mechanical heart valve replacement has an inherent risk of thromboembolic events (TEs). Current guidelines recommend an international normalized ratio (INR) of at least 2.5 after mechanical mitral valve replacement (MVR).

Appropriateness of selection criteria for CT examinations performed at an emergency department.

In the diagnosis of traumatic and nontraumatic emergencies, computed tomography (CT) is the most frequently performed procedure. The aims of this study were to find out whether CT report results can be used as a reliable tool for the diagnosis and management of patients at an emergency department and to evaluate the appropriateness of the selection criteria for CT examinations. For this reason, we analysed the emergency CT procedures according to the diagnostic hypothesis written on CT request forms, the results of the CT reports and the final diagnosis of the patients.

Could mini-PET be used to instead of 4 h original-PET to assess peritoneal permeability in children on peritoneal dialysis?

Background: Original peritoneal equilibration test (PET) is an implementation that requires hard work for peritoneal dialysis (PD) staff. Therefore, several authors have attempted to validate short and fast PET protocols, with controversial results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concordance between the mini-PET and original PET in children.

Epidemiological study of self-reported sleep problems in Turkish high school adolescents.

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency and correlates of a variety of sleep problems in adolescents.

Methods: A representative school-based sample of 3485 8th-12th graders was selected according to the cluster sampling technique. A sleep questionnaire and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire were completed by the students along with their parents.

Factors affecting the safety of drains and catheters in surgical patients.

Objective: Drains and catheters are used for both prophylactic and therapeutic reasons in clinical practice. This study aimed to investigate the factors that affect safety of drains, catheters, nasogastric tube and central venous line in patients who underwent surgery.

Material And Methods: Two hundred and four consecutive patients who were operated at the general surgery clinics under general anesthesia were included in the study.

Association of ventral incisional hernias with comorbid diseases.

Background: Ventral incisional hernias are more commonly associated with comorbid diseases when compared to other hernia types. We investigate the hypothesis that unfavourable local factors related to comorbid diseases may lead to incisional hernia development.

Materials And Methods: The characteristics of incisional hernia (71 patients), primary ventral hernia (114 patients)and groin hernia groups (820 patients) were analysed and compared among each other.

The learning curve of real time elastosonography: a preliminary study conducted for the assessment of malignancy risk in thyroid nodules.

Background: Malignancy is correlated with stiffness which is assessed by real time elastosonography (RTE). RTE is not used in routine practice. We aimed to establish the learning curve of RTE on radiology residents.

Long-term results of endoscopic resection for type I gastric neuroendocrine tumors.

Background: A number of different therapies, including endoscopic resection, have been suggested for the treatment of Type 1 gastric neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). The current study aimed to determine the long-term efficacy of endoscopic resection for Type 1 gastric NETs.

Methods: Twenty-two patients (from 1999 to 2012) with Type 1 gastric NETs were included in the study.

The efficacy of vitamin K2 and calcitriol combination on thalassemic osteopathy.

Thalassemic osteopathy (TOSP) has emerged as a topic of interest, as the optimized transfusion regimens and iron chelations has markedly improved the survival of the patients suffering from thalassemia major (TM) and increased the life expectancy. The aim of this prospective monocentric pilot study was to investigate the effects of a dietary supplement with vitamin K2 (50 mcg menaquinone-7) and vitamin D (5 mcg calcitriol) on the patients with TOSP. Twenty children (12 girls, 8 boys; age varied from 3 to 18 y) with β TM, who underwent regular blood transfusion and iron chelation therapy, were enrolled in this study and investigated at the initial, sixth, and 12th month of the treatment.

Desensitization of darbepoetin-α: a case report.

Human recombinant erythropoietins (EPO) and darbepoetins are widely used for anemias associated with chronic kidney disease.  Allergic reactions to erythropoetins and darbepoetins have only occasionally been reported. These skin reactions include pruritus, wheals at the injection site, orofacial anaphylaxis and anjioedema.

Colchicine treatment in children with familial Mediterranean fever: is it a risk factor for neuromyopathy?

Background: We cared for a 17-year-old adolescent with familial Mediterranean fever under colchicine treatment. Because of the increased creatinine kinase level (3937 U/L) observed in this individual, we planned to assess all pediatric patients with familial Mediterranean fever under colchicine treatment to detect any resultant neuromyopathy.

Methods: The study included 88 children with familial Mediterranean fever who were receiving colchicine.

Neurofibromas of the bladder in a child with neurofibromatosis type 1 causing chronic renal disease.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal-dominant inherited disorder and its prominent feature is the neurofibroma and renal involvement includes renal artery stenosis and renal artery aneurysms causing renovascular hypertension. The genitourinary tract may be rarely involved, leading to urinary symptoms of obstruction and hydronephrosis. Herein, we report a 12-year-old boy with chronic renal failure associated with neurofibromas of the bladder, which leads to urinary obstruction.

The effects of pelvic dimensions on radical retropubic prostatectomy.

Introduction: To determine the effects of pelvic dimensions on margin status, preoperative and postoperative estimated blood loss (EBL), operative time and transfusion rate (TR) during radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP).

Materials And Methods: Data from 94 patients with preoperative prostate MRI were analyzed. Pelvic dimensions, including interspinous distance (ISD), bony (BFW) and soft tissue (SW) pelvic width, apical prostate depth, upper conjugate (UC), lower conjugate (LC) were measured by preoperative MRI.

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection and finger anomaly.

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the most common cause of intrauterine infection. It affects the central nervous system and causes microcephaly, hydrocephalus, mental retardation, hearing disorder, chorioretinitis and rarely finger anomalies. We present the case of a 4-month-old girl with an agenesis of the middle finger and syndactyly of the fourth and fifth fingers as a result of congenital CMV; this is the first such case in the literature.

L-2 hydroxyglutaric aciduria presenting with anxiety symptoms.

l-2 Hydroxyglutaric aciduria is a rare autosomal recessively inherited metabolic disorder of organic acid metabolism. Cerebellar and pyramidal signs with progressive neurological syndromes, mental deterioration, tremors, seizures, epilepsy and rarely macrocephaly are clinical findings of the disease. The diagnosis depends on increased levels of l-2 hydroxyglutaric acid in urine, plasma and cerebrospinal fluid.

Acquired left coronary artery fistula draining to the right ventricle after myocardial infarction.

Coronary arteriography performed in a 42-year-old male patient showed communications from the left anterior descending artery to the right ventricle one month after a myocardial infarction. The area of communication did not correspond to the site of the infarction as established by electrocardiogram and previous angiography. Exactly how the fistula developed in our case remains unknown.

Cerebral multicystic lesions in a child with neurofibromatosis.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous syndrome, with frequent involvement of the central nervous system (CNS). As well as abnormal cellular differentiation, disordered cell migration during development is the most common cause of the various brain lesions. Cystic lesions are rarely observed in neurocutaneous diseases, and the origin of the cysts is not known.
