Exposure to various organic compounds including several environmental pollutants and drugs can cause cellular damage through the generation of lipid peroxidation products. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl) is a potent toxic agent that causes peroxidative degeneration in many tissues. Dexpanthenol (Dxp) is a member of the B complex vitamins that exhibits antioxidant effects against lipid peroxidation products.

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with testicular germ cell tumor.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the referral, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of germ cell tumor (GCT).

Methods: A retrospective single-center analysis of all patients who underwent diagnostic and surgical procedures due to GCT was performed from September 2018 to September 2021.

Results: 65 patients were enrolled into the study by dividing them into two groups as before pandemic (Pre-CovGCT) and during the pandemic (CovGCT).

Laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal and totally extraperitoneal in inguinal hernia surgery: comparison of intraoperative and postoperative early complications of two techniques.

Purpose: Totally extraperitoneal (TEP) and transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) are laparoscopic techniques frequently used in inguinal hernia surgeries. There are very few studies directly comparing the outcomes of TEP and TAPP. The present study compared both techniques' technical aspects, intraoperative and postoperative early complications.

SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant Decreases Nanobody Binding and ACE2 Blocking Effectivity.

The Delta variant spreads more rapidly than previous variants of SARS-CoV-2. This variant comprises several mutations on the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of its spike glycoprotein, which binds to the peptidase domain (PD) of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors in host cells. The RBD-PD interaction has been targeted by antibodies and nanobodies to prevent viral infection, but their effectiveness against the Delta variant remains unclear.

Children's disaster knowledge, risk perceptions, and preparedness: A cross-country comparison in Nepal and Turkey.

While children are one of the groups at risk in disasters, they can also take an active part in disaster management, provided that the opportunity is given. This research examined the effect of disaster experience, disaster education, country, and city socioeconomic status on children's perceived risk and preparedness with a survey of 1335 children between 11 and 14 years old, in Nepal and Turkey. The survey used questionnaires and the pictorial representation of illness and self measure (PRISM) tool.

Middle-term outcomes in renal transplant recipients with COVID-19: a national, multicenter, controlled study.

Background: In this study, we evaluated 3-month clinical outcomes of kidney transplant recipients (KTR) recovering from COVID-19 and compared them with a control group.

Method: The primary endpoint was death in the third month. Secondary endpoints were ongoing respiratory symptoms, need for home oxygen therapy, rehospitalization for any reason, lower respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, biopsy-proven acute rejection, venous/arterial thromboembolic event, cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection/disease and BK viruria/viremia at 3 months.

Relationship between disease awareness and severity of kidney disease in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease patients.

Introduction: Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is responsible for 5%-10% of end-stage renal disease. We examined the relationship between renal and extrarenal findings, disease severity, and the level of consciousness of PKD patients.

Methods: Patients were asked to answer the questionnaire about PKD.

Development of Diaphragmatic Hernia in Patients with Penetrating Left Thoracoabdominal Stab Wounds.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the consequences of repairing versus not repairing diaphragmatic injury caused by penetrating left thoracoabdominal stab wounds.

Methods: Diagnostic laparoscopy was performed to evaluate the left diaphragm in patients with penetrating left thoracoabdominal stab wounds who did not have an indication for emergency laparotomy. Patients who did not consent to laparoscopy were discharged without undergoing surgery.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of men presenting for other complaints whose ejaculatory function inquiry indicated premature ejaculation (PE).

Methods: The data of 536 PE patients, including those who presented with the complaint of PE (group 1) and those presenting with other complaints who were diagnosed with PE (group 2) as a result of ejaculatory function inquiry using estimated intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT) and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT), were retrospectively evaluated. Age, PE type, comorbidities, recommended treatments, and treatment acceptance status of all patients were recorded.

The Longitudinal Evolution of Post-COVID-19 Outcomes Among Hemodialysis Patients in Turkey.

Introduction: Hemodialysis (HD) patients have increased risk for short-term adverse outcomes of COVID-19. However, complications and survival at the post-COVID-19 period have not been published extensively.

Methods: We conducted a national, multicenter observational study that included adult maintenance HD patients recovered from confirmed COVID-19.

The importance of β-hCG values in prediction of the effectiveness of single dose methotrexate therapy in tubal ectopic pregnancy.

Objectives: To investigate the importance of β-hCG values on the day of onset and on the fourth and seventh day after treatment in the effectiveness of treatment in tubal ectopic pregnancies treated with a single dose of methotrexate (MTX).

Material And Methods: One hundred sixty-two patients with tubal ectopic pregnancy treated with a single dose MTX treatment were retrospectively evaluated. β-hCG values and changes on Days 0, 4 and 7 of the MTX treatment successful group and the unsuccessful group were analyzed.

Effects of taurine and apocynin on the zone of stasis.

Background: Among the zones of coagulation, hyperemia and stasis that occur in the burned area, the most intense metabolic process and the highest sensitivity to recovery with treatment is the zone of stasis.This metabolic process is related to how well the tissues in the zone of stasis can cope with oxidative stress. If the tissues in the zone of stasis are saved, the burn area will potentially heal faster and with less scar.

Proton density fat fraction: magnetic resonance imaging applications beyond the liver.

Magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) is an emerging quantitative imaging biomarker that accurately measures the fat fraction of tissue by correcting factors influencing magnetic resonance signal intensity. Beyond fat quantification, it also measures R2* which is a direct measure of iron concentration. The utilization of MRI-PDFF in liver diseases is well established.

Prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and its impact on quality of life and functional exercise capacity in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Background: In pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), pathophysiological consequences of the disease and the drugs used to treat PAH may adversely affect musculoskeletal system. Aim of the study was to evaluate musculoskeletal pain prevalence and its impact on quality of life (QoL) and exercise capacity in PAH patients.

Methods: 61 PAH patients were evaluated with Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) for musculoskeletal pain presence, EmPHasis-10 and Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) for QoL, 6-min walk test (6MWT) for functional exercise capacity and International Physical Activity Questionnaire- Short Form (IPAQ-SF) for physical activity participation.

MRI in the Diagnosis and Treatment Response Assessment of Chronic Nonbacterial Osteomyelitis in Children and Adolescents.

Purpose Of Review: To explain the central role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis and follow-up of chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) in children and adolescents, centering on practical technical aspects and salient diagnostic features.

Recent Findings: In the absence of conclusive clinical features and widely accepted laboratory tests, including validated disease biomarkers, MRI (whether targeted or covering the entire body) currently plays an indispensable role in the diagnosis and therapy response assessment of CNO. Whole-body MRI, which is the reference imaging standard for CNO, can be limited to a short tau inversion recovery (STIR) coronal image set covering the entire body and a STIR sagittal set covering the spine, an approximately 30-min examination with no need for intravenous contrast or diffusion-weighted imaging.

A rare case of pulmonary lymphomatoid granulomatosis complicated with venous thrombosis.

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LG) is Epstein-Barr virus associated and aggressive B cell lymphoproliferative disease. The most common sites of involvement are lungs, skin, kidneys, liver and central nervous system. The clinical presentation of pulmonary LG may mimic infectious diseases, malignancies or vasculitis.

Skeletal muscle energetics in patients with moderate to advanced kidney disease.

Sarcopenia, defined as decrease in muscle function and mass, is common in patients with moderate to advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Muscle mitochondrial dysfunction is proposed as one of the mechanisms underlying sarcopenia. Patients with moderate to advanced CKD have decreased muscle mitochondrial content and oxidative capacity along with suppressed activity of various mitochondrial enzymes such as mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes and pyruvate dehydrogenase, leading to impaired energy production.

Compartmentalization of telomeres through DNA-scaffolded phase separation.

Telomeres form unique nuclear compartments that prevent degradation and fusion of chromosome ends by recruiting shelterin proteins and regulating access of DNA damage repair factors. To understand how these dynamic components protect chromosome ends, we combine in vivo biophysical interrogation and in vitro reconstitution of human shelterin. We show that shelterin components form multicomponent liquid condensates with selective biomolecular partitioning on telomeric DNA.
