Life-course persistent antisocial behavior is 10 to 14 times more prevalent in males and it has been suggested that testosterone levels could account for this gender bias. Preliminary studies with measures of fetal testosterone find inconsistent associations with antisocial behavior, especially studies that use the 2D:4D ratio as a proxy for fetal testosterone. However, circulating testosterone consistently shows positive associations with antisocial behaviors throughout childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, particularly in males.

The effect of vitamin D on expression of TGF β1 in ovary.

The transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) is thought to have important roles in several stages of folliculogenesis. Vitamin D is effective in cell proliferation, differentition and on estrogen biosynthesis. The aim of the present study was to determine the respective role of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 on expression of TGF-β1 in developing rat ovaries.

The frequency of antibodies against cyclic citrullinated peptides and rheumatoid factor in healthy population: a field study of rheumatoid arthritis from northern Turkey.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic and an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation of the synovial membrane that affects approximately 1 % of the total world population. Rheumatoid factor (RF) is a widely used auto antibody in diagnosis of the RA and found positive in 50-80 % of the patients but with a lower specificity. On the other hand, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) is the latest serological marker with a specificity around 98 %.

Comparison of three methods for the estimation of pineal gland volume using magnetic resonance imaging.

Pineal gland is a very important neuroendocrine organ with many physiological functions such as regulating circadian rhythm. Radiologically, the pineal gland volume is clinically important because it is usually difficult to distinguish small pineal tumors via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although many studies have estimated the pineal gland volume using different techniques, to the best of our knowledge, there has so far been no stereological work done on this subject.

Differential changes in Substance P, VIP as well as neprilysin levels in patients with gastritis or ulcer.

The protective effect of capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerve (CSSN) activation was recently demonstrated in human gastric mucosa. We here examined changes in neuropeptides, specifically Substance P (SP), calcitonin-gene related peptide (CGRP) and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in patients with chronic gastritis or ulcer. Furthermore changes in neprilysin levels, which hydrolyse these neuropeptides, were determined.

Oxidative stress in the in vivo DMBA rat model of breast cancer: suppression by a voltage-gated sodium channel inhibitor (RS100642).

Breast cancer (BCa) was induced in vivo in female rats with 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA). Two main questions were addressed. Firstly, would the carcinogenesis be accompanied by oxidative stress as signalled by superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, malondialdehyde and total nitrate? Secondly, would treating the rats additionally with a blocker of voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) activity, shown previously to promote BCa progression, affect the oxidative responses? The DMBA-induced increases in the antioxidant systems were completely blocked by the VGSC inhibitor RS100642, which also significantly prolonged the lifespan.

Testosterone (T) has received increasing interest in the recent years as a probable biological determinant in the etiology of male-biased clinical conditions such as psychopathy (i.e. psychopathy is more prevalent in men and leads to an earlier onset and more severe expression of antisocial and aggressive behavior in men compared to women).

Is there any link between oxidative stress and lung involvement due to inflammatory bowel disease: an experimental study.

Background/aims: Lung involvement due to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is frequent, however the pathogenic mechanism is still debatable. Although the evidence of inflammation in colonic and lung tissue has been documented, the possible effect of oxidative stress in lung tissue has not been evaluated to date. We sought to assess the effects of oxidant/antioxidants on lung tissue in a model of experimental colitis.

Knowledge levels of Turkish nurses related to prevention and early diagnosis of cancer.

Background: The aim of this study was to examine knowledge about cancer and early diagnosis of cancer among nurses.

Materials And Method: This descriptive study was carried out at a University Faculty of Medicine Hospital in Turkey. Study between April and June, 2011, with 325 volunteer nurses.

The relationship between insight and clinical features in bipolar disorder.

Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between insight dimensions and clinical features in bipolar disorder.

Method: One hundred and four inpatients with bipolar disorder( manic or mixed episodes) diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria participated in the study. Patients were evaluated both during an acute episode and in remission, prior their discharge from the hospital by the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), The Scale of Unawareness of Mental Disorders (SUMD), and a questionnaire regarding demographic and clinical characteristics.

Introduction: Elevated aminotransferase levels(ATLs) are alert the physicians for liver-affecting disease and may reflect liver injury. We aimed to determine the prevalence of elevated ATLs and the association of elevated ATLs with the metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a northern province of Turkey.

Methods: The study consists of retrospective bibliometric research. The selected sample of the research consisted of six Turkish nursing journals published between 1994-2003 from a total population of ten journals.

Prognostic effect of different cut-off values (20mm, 30mm and 40mm) for clinical tumor size in FIGO stage IB cervical cancer.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate whether applying cut-off values of 20mm, 30mm and 40mm for tumor size have prognostic value in terms of survival or not.

MEFV gene mutations and its impact on the clinical course in ulcerative colitis patients.

We aimed to assess the prevalence of CKD in the Black Sea Region, Turkey, and to evaluate any relationship between age, gender, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and CKD. This study was conducted in 70 different areas in Tokat Province in the Black Sea Region, in the northern part of Turkey. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated from the serum creatinine using MDRD formulas.
