Background: In developing countries evidences regarding pulmonary hypertension (PH) in rheumatic heart disease (RHD) patients are lacking, despite being responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. As a result, identifying the factors that influence PH is crucial to improve the quality of care.

Objective: To determine prevalence of pulmonary hypertension and its associated factors among rheumatic heart disease patients at the public hospitals of Bahir Dar city, Ethiopia.

Introduction: Nutritional education intervention during pregnancy is the process of teaching pregnant women about the importance of a healthy diet and how to make healthy food choices. It is an important part of public health and vital to preventing adverse birth outcomes. Therefore, synthesising available evidence on the effect of nutritional education intervention on birth outcomes is essential for decision-making by policymakers and for identifying needed gaps for future research.

Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) implementations to control cholera outbreak in Oromia region, Ethiopia.

Background: Oromia regional state experiencing cholera outbreaks in a protracted pattern despite various interventions at local and regional levels. This study aimed to examine the implementation of Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) activities for cholera outbreak control in the region.

Methods: We conducted a quantitative and qualitative mixed-method study.

Investigating the salinity distribution using field measurements in the semi-arid region of southern Ethiopia.

This study investigated the distribution of salinity and sodicity in the irrigated areas of Abaya Chamo. Representative water and soil samples were collected from different soil depths (0-30 cm and 30-60 cm). Sodium absorption ratio (SAR), electrical conductivity (Ec), pH, exchange sodium, magnesium, calcium, and potassium cations, and exchange sodium percentage (ESP) of the sampled sites were analyzed for soil salinity classification and severity analysis.

Malignant hypertension: current challenges, prevention strategies, and future perspectives.

Introduction: Based on office blood pressure (BP) values, hypertension is categorized into three stages: stage 1 (140-159/90-99 mmHg), stage 2 (160-179/100-109 mmHg), and stage 3 (≥180/≥110 mmHg). Malignant hypertension (MHT) is characterized by extreme BP elevation (systolic blood pressure above 200 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure above 130 mmHg) and acute microvascular damage affecting various organs, particularly the retinas, brain, and kidneys.

Objectives: The pathogenesis, predisposing variables, therapy, and preventive strategies for MHT were examined in this review.

Therefore, this study aimed to assess the level and determinants of knowledge and attitudes towards nutrition among pregnant women in the Minjar Shenkora district, Ethiopia. Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted between June and August 2021 among 334 pregnant women who were selected using a systematic random sampling technique.

Does Diversity Climate Matter? The More Respected I Feel, the Better I Can Do: Unravelling the Mechanisms Enabling Employees' Extra-Role Performance.

The current study examined how a diversity climate promotes employees' extra-role performance and how the roles of workplace belongingness and thriving at work mediate this effect. Furthermore, this study investigated the sequential mediation effect of workplace belongingness and thriving at work in the aforesaid relationship. This study also tested the leaders' positive affective presence as a moderator in the effect of diversity climate on extra-role performance.

A case report on surgical management of glomus tympanicum and literature review.

Introduction: Glomus tympanicum is a benign tumor classified under the group glomus tumors, and is also known as paragangliomas.

Case Presentation: A 52 years old woman presented with unilateral pulsatile tinnitus and hearing loss. She had a visible reddish mass behind the eardrum; Temporal bone CT scans suggested middle ear mass secondary to Glomus Tympanicum tumors.

In Ethiopia, extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is a significant public health challenge, and drug resistance (DR) in EPTB is often overlooked. In a cross-sectional study conducted between August 2022 and October 2023, we aimed to explore the magnitude of phenotypic drug resistance and identify genetic mutations linked to resistance using 189 Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) isolates cultured from extrapulmonary clinical specimens.

Inequitable gender norms and its associated factors among university students in southern Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study, 2022.

Background: Gender defined as the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and characteristics that society deems appropriate for men, women, and other gender identities. Inequitable gender norms promote male dominance and aggressiveness while portraying women as being subservient. The African Initiative for Bioinformatics Online Training in Neurodegenerative Diseases (AI-BOND): Investing in the next generation of African neuroscientists.

Unlabelled: Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and AD-related dementias (AD/ADRD), pose significant challenges to health care systems globally, particularly in Africa. With the advances in medical technology and research capabilities, especially in next-generation sequencing and imaging, vast amounts of data have been generated from AD/ADRD research. Given that the greatest increase in AD/ADRD prevalence is expected to occur in Africa, it is critical to establish comprehensive bioinformatics training programs to help African scientists leverage existing data and collect additional information to untangle AD/ADRD heterogeneity in African populations.

Oncolytic herpes simplex viruses (oHSV) preferentially replicate in cancer cells while inducing antitumor immunity, and thus, they are often referred to as in situ cancer vaccines. OHSV infection of tumors elicits diverse host immune responses comprising both innate and adaptive components. Although the innate/adaptive immune responses primarily target the tumor, they also contribute to antiviral immunity, limiting viral replication/oncolysis.

Introduction: Home birth is described as a delivery that takes place at home without the presence of a skilled birth attendant. In 2017, nearly 295,000 mothers died from various pregnancy and childbirth-related problems, accounting for approximately 810 maternal deaths per day. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the spatial distributions of home birth and associated factors in Ethiopia using the Performance Monitoring for Action Survey (PMAS) 2019) to get information that helps to take geographic-based interventions and can assist health planners and policymakers in developing particular measures to reduce home deliveries.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic abnormality affecting 537 million people worldwide. Poor glycemic control, longer duration, and poor medication adherence increased the risk of DM complications. Comprehensive evidence on the pooled prevalence of microvascular complications in DM patients in Ethiopia is not available.

In early phase drug development of combination therapy, the primary objective is to preliminarily assess whether there is additive activity from a novel agent when combined with an established monotherapy. Due to potential feasibility issues for conducting a large randomized study, uncontrolled single-arm trials have been the mainstream approach in cancer clinical trials. However, such trials often present significant challenges in deciding whether to proceed to the next phase of development due to the lack of randomization in traditional two-arm trials.

Unintended pregnancy among women living with HIV and its predictors in East Africa, 2024. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: An unintended pregnancy refers to a situation where a pregnancy occurs either when there is no desire for a child (unwanted) or when it takes place at a time that was not anticipated (mistimed). Pregnant women infected with HIV face a two to tenfold increased risk of mortality during both pregnancy and the postpartum period compared to those who are not infected. A national level cohort study has identified that about 70 babies born HIV positive, 60% of them were from unplanned pregnancy.
