Species invading non-native habitats can cause irreversible environmental damage and economic harm. Yet, how introduced species become widespread invaders remains poorly understood. Adaptation within native-range habitats and rapid adaptation to new environments may both influence invasion success.

Achieving self-sufficiency in skin allograft: A Singapore experience.

Aim: This paper describes how Singapore achieved skin allograft self-sufficiency in 2017 by adopting 5 key strategies in 2012.

Background: Singapore General Hospital (SGH) established its own allograft recovery programme in 1998 but was still dependent on overseas allograft procurement.

Key Strategies: RESULTS: The allograft recovery programme expanded from 4 to all 20 institutions.

The occurrence of plastic ingestion by fish is increasing around the world, however there are currently very few studies focusing on the ingestion of macro (>20 mm) and mega (>100 mm) plastics in pelagic predatory fish, particularly in Australian waters. Further to this, information on plastic ingestion in recreationally caught fish is deficient. We report on two cases of macroplastic ingestion and another case of megaplastic ingestion by southern bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii (Castelnau, 1872), caught recreationally in Tasmania and Victoria.

Introduction: In Singapore, tissue donation is covered under the Medical (Therapy, Education and Research) Act. The objective of this study is to review the demographic and psychosocial factors, which may cause hesitation/unwillingness amongst healthcare professionals towards tissue donation.

Efficient aggregation of multiple classes of information in wireless sensor networks.

Congestion in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) can lead to buffer overflow, resource waste and delay or loss of critical information from the sensors. In this paper, we propose the Priority-based Coverage-aware Congestion Control (PCC) algorithm which is distributed, priority-distinct, and fair. PCC provides higher priority to packets with event information in which the sink is more interested.

Sensitivity of parametric link functions in generalized linear models.

A common method of choosing the link function in generalized linear models is to specify a parametric link family indexed by unknown parameters. The maximum likelihood estimates of such link parameters, however, may often depend on one or several extreme observations. Diagnostics are derived to assess the sensitivity of the parametric link analysis.

Dietary fiber, Hispanics, and breast cancer risk?

The cancer rates of immigrant populations in the United States must be taken into account when looking at the importance of diet and culture as it relates to cancer prevention. Unfortunately, some nutrition studies targeted toward nontraditional white populations have not adequately confronted the issue of cultural meaning in efforts to gather dietary data accurate enough to support nutritional analyses, identify marginal diets, or relate risk to dietary patterns. The study presented here resolves many of the culturally specific issues utilizing awareness, attention, and judicious combination of culturally sensitive qualitative and quantitative research techniques.

Glutamine stability in biological tissues evaluated by fluorometric analysis.

Stage-dependent variation in the radiosensitivity of DNA in developing male germ cells.

The induction and rejoining of gamma-ray-induced DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs) were measured in the spermatogenic cells of mice using the alkaline elution technique. The animals were injected with [3H]thymidine and sacrificed on subsequent days to examine selectively cohorts of radiolabeled cells in the successive stages of maturation. A significantly increased frequency of SSB was observed in the unirradiated early spermatocytes and late spermatids, associated with genetic recombination and chromatin compaction, respectively.
